This is what we should have been getting for the fuel of the future. Hybrids with big batteries. The majority of traffic using electric day to day and the efficiency and much cleaner long distance. My old Tiguan had matrix LED and they were a revelation. Amazing even back then. Made night driving a breeze and not on flash from oncoming traffic. Was amazed how you were basically driving with full beam where you needed and not at other cars. Amazing tech and I miss it very much on my current car

I have been saying this about EV’s from the start..we want an electrically powered car for daily commute/shopping/visiting use but a petrol engine for long distances and at last somebody has worked it out. Not totally sure on the jog wheel and huge screen but it might be fine and the lights are wonderful…unless they get broken or fail and then the costs might worry…£4500 per light on some Land Rover models…I have them and they are wonderful as are those on my Mercedes SL…total transformation at night and fascinating to watch in action…but don’t break one! 😀😀😀😀😀

Great to see the 3rd Generation car arriving in Europe. Lovely looking car especially with the electric range now at 60miles. Imagine most people could run this regularly on full electric without ever needing the engine. Looks like a great family car with excellent build quality. Well done VW.

Looks interesting, however rather having a knob that you have to swipe across a couple of times to get to a volume button, why not just have a volume button? - simpler, safer. Why are manufacturers continuing to do this ?

Fascinating view of the next gen Tiguan Pete. However, do you not think that there is space in the market for a cheaper car with knobs, buttons and no fancy electronic gizmos? I've managed over 40 years of driving without self-dipping headlights. I also think that touchscreens are fundamentally distracting whereas I can find all the controls (that I need routinely) without looking away from the road. Or am I just a dinosaur?
@markdawson4625

No you are not an old fossil. You can feel for a button or knob and use it instinctively, where as you can not with a screen because you still have to avert your eyes. We have a Tesla and a 10yr old Volvo V70. Volvo for me every time.
@reinmansmith
@reinmansmith Жыл бұрын
Agree entirely, what is so difficult about reaching for a volume knob? Oh I know, let’s reach for a knob low down, have to swipe that to a volume setting (having to look down to see if it’s now on ‘volume’) and then adjust the volume!! And they call this progress aahhhh!!

I agree there is far too much tech in these new cars. I want a basic car with a manual gearbox. I do not even want electric windows. I have a new A4 Quattro with DSG but I much prefer a simpler car. I do not want a digital cockpit or touch screen. I have them in the Audi and just do not use them preferring Wayes on the phone satnav. Wait till these lights go wrong and it needs replacement. That will not be cheap compared to a bulb.
@AZ-vg6li
@AZ-vg6li 11 ай бұрын
folks,the reason we are getting the touch screen is simply because it is cheaper for the manufacturer.Less parts and less moving parts.Touch screens are highly anti ergonomic and i strongly believe they should be banned just like the use of a cell phone is already.Our government agencies are not doing their job.
@LookingGlass24
@LookingGlass24 11 ай бұрын
What @AZ-vg6li is saying is right. Why are the transportation safety agencies refusing to do their job and stopping manufacturers from producing cars with basically cell phones in their dashboards. And to boot, allow the ability to text inside these digital consoles-the hypocrisy is astonishing. They prohibit cell phone use but say nothing when it’s baked into the cars and consumers can’t even opt out of those models. It’s crazy stupid and irresponsible in every way. 😣 🤢

The real game-changer will be a NON-plug in hybrid with a decent range for those who don’t have the ability to charge at home. Also the price of so many cars that are not really luxury cars are being hit by the ludicrous £40,000 ‘luxury’ additional road fund licence in the first five years.

One thing to check is the servicing costs of hybrids. I found out previously with the Golf GTE I was thinking of buying the servicing costs were considerably more expensive especially at major servicing and the intervals are the same as a standard petrol engine. But the Tiguan does look nice and the bigger range on the plug in hybrid is useful

Hi Pete-nice preview-thank you. I’d really love to see you do a video of the HD Matrix lights. I have eye limitations and though I have 20/20 vision, I need more light in the roads at night, but not just any light. These deeply intrigue me as light at night is something I need more of and better too. However, if the cost of replacing one of them is in the thousands of dollars, that could be a deal breaker. Look forward to you doing such a video. Thanks in advance!

Totally agree. Thanks for a great review. We have a Taycan and took a trip and it performed well, even with charging. But on a second trip on the same route, the chargers at mid-point refused to charge the car and we almost didn't make it to the next charger. We have since used the Volt and will certainly consider the Tiguan when replacing the Volt.

That is a game changer in my mind. If I could turn the clock back a year knowing what I know now and having access to the cars that have come through in that time I would go down the route of a Plug in Hybrid. Although I am a fan of JLR and would probably go for a JLR product I have in the past owned both a Passat And Golf estates and liked both for the room and laterally in the golf the technology. If and when we change our car I think that car would be a contender and if I was looking for a change right now it would be very close to the top of the list. I guess there was no mention of pricing yet. Another very informative review and I nearly forgot about the control wheel I loved that in my JCW and that was pretty basic in the Mini the VW one is a different level.

VW are waiting for a battery with 1,000 mile range, a 3 minute charging time (to 50%) and a 500,000 mile life, before they seriously promote all electric. They are also hoping for a battery that does not catch on fire. We will need to wait for at least another 5 years, but VW will be getting the last laugh.

I had a 2012 Tiguan for 7 years. I liked the car, but one broken DSG-7 (wet) and broken EGR system made me change to Toyota. I have not had any issues in the last four years with Toyota Hybrid. But this eHybrid with its range is tempting. I just would have hoped they would have gone the road, where the 1.5 TSI is just a generator and the drive train would have been electric with that 20kW battery. It would have been a much more simple system with no DSG hassles.

As the owner of a 2019 North American 4Motion model I have to say that although I like the aesthetics, I'm not a fan of the shorter wheelbase on this new model. I like the longer wheel base look. I'm also not a fan of all the bright lighting in the cabin. It's hard enough these days with the LED headlamps coming at you burning a hole in your retinas let alone having a full blown neon rainbow light show inside your own vehicle added into the mix. Other than that, I think it's a pretty damn nice looking ride.

It's the headlight tech that interests me the most. Hybrid tech is not interesting to me here in Australia as even with 100km range it is not enough for daily use. I would save the cash and opt for either the petrol or diesel option. Here in Aus it has to be petrol as diesel is not available here in the Tiguan sadly.

And the price for all of this? I used to be a big fan of VW, but in recent years their build quality and value hasn't been what it was. I'm sorry, but to me this looks like most new SUV's, unless I'm missing something. I would argue that an SUV is not as day to day practical as an estate. This car has way too many options for this, that and the other and all manufactures are guilty. SUV's are too high to handle well and the comfort is compromised by 'beefing up' the suspension. I'm not tech adverse, my other half has a Model Y, I just think a few buttons for major controls are safer. One thing you are definitely right about Pete is the increased battery size allowing short journeys to be almost all battery powered with fuel taking over on the motorway etc. Nice one.

Not sure about body panels, I doubt it 👎

The North American market will get a totally different car. But its a pretty good bet the PHEV will still be offered.

VW finally discovered jogwheel, two decades after BMW. But seriously, it is a much better user interface in a moving vehicle compared to touchscreen. And finally "cooled" phone chargers!

Nice looking new generation, not a fan of the colour but the plug-in hybrid seems ideal for most people! One question, whats the price?

Bit of a disappointing review, no mention of weight, is the hybrid around 2 tonnes? Do we need ever heavier cars on our roads? 100km claimed will end up being about 45 miles in real life too. By the way I had matrix style LEDs on my Mercedes C63, a column mounted transmission selector and an MMI jog wheel in 2016 so not exactly cutting edge tech…..Seems VW still haven’t listened to drivers who want simple controls on their vehicles, ie physical switches, knobs and dials. Control via an iPad is the only thing that stops me considering a Tesla as my next car.

Disappointing review because it isn't a review. It hasn't been driven. First look

@4:30 are there any fog/all-weather lights within the binnacle? I'm just glad they didn't go with the glowing VW logo (like the U.S. version Atlas). Its not that I think its necessarily that bad but only if owners have a way to turn it off. Not a fan of the silver strip on the rear bumper or the black wheel surrounds. I'm also not sure about how the gloss black will wear over time.

I've been saying for sometime that 2 phones connected to Bluetooth has to be done. With regards to charging while on a trip, I don't want to plan where to stop so regularly, unless I need a loo break or food I want to keep travelling.

Looks smart. Half of the modern tech seems to be there for the sake of innovation. Just more weight and complexity = cost. That of course isn't just VW, that's every brand

I've got the 2nd gen with the 230ps 2.0 petrol. Love the car and soon after I bought it they then released the 'R' version. For gen 3, the eHybrid with 272ps would be a great balance between the 2. Interesting that in your vid you say the model is an 'R' but I wonder if thats just they styling pack, rather than a 300+ ps engine.

Looking at the front seats I would guess its and "R" not an "R Line".
