When I was a little boy in Catholic school I would ask questions like, "Didn't Jesus say that God is WITHIN each one of us?" and they would tell me I was being a heretic and proceed to physically beat me. It never deterred my inner feeling though. A lifetime of seeking has grown into the most wonderful sense of oneness with the Source of Creation and Creation itself. "Brian" has dissolved and all that is left is pure loving awareness. Love and blessings to all seekers who read this. Never give up! You are Divine and the Divine is you.

Dear brother. Why did they not read the bible. It is all there isn't it?! God is within us. Gid showed me this at 5vyrs of age. It's beautiful how God speaks to a child. God us not He or She ir It. God is Creator of All. It makes me very upset to hear how you were treated. Such ignorance of the bible that they had studied. It seems they were brainwashed by religion instead of re linking back to God within us and all around us. God bless you for your young tender insight.

I love that you talk about having a radical experience that is indescribable because that is absolutely the truth. It’s not the same to just grow by learning in your mind , as opposed to having these experiences. When you experience it, you know that you are experiencing the embodiment of truth. Really it drives me nuts I have trouble bringing other people into the fold-I’ve tried to get others to seek this and fall short. I pray that I’ll get there one day and witness other people I love desire the mystic life. There’s just so much more we can have in this life. The understanding of Christ in us, we really could not possibly get any closer to Him than we already are but so many teachings trick people into believing they are further away. However I’ve had a lot of trauma in my life that had led me to this point so that resonated with me. I’m also commenting to let you know I’m out here, and others like me, who have found ourselves on this path. I know it’s one of my greatest joys to become aware there are others who are understanding this and continuously seeking to live it , because it is such a gift

I have sever PTSD about all those that call themselves Christians or Catholics. I was raised Catholic, and beaten by racist, violent, catholic Nuns and Priests. I know there is a GOD!! There has to be something GREATER THAN ME. I don’t want to hear there is a difference between God and Jesus. I don’t want to hear that your interpretation is the only way for me to believe! I don’t want to hear that there is only one way to kneel to God. My God has no face, no body, only PURE LIGHT. I love listening to those that invite me to open my heart and mind to SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE. I seek what we as humans are supposed to be and practice….. TO LOVE. TO SEE EACH OTHER AS A MIRROR OF ONES SELF REFLECTION. TO BE COMPASSIONATE . TO BE KIND. This is what OUR CREATOR, OUR HIGHER SELF, OUR DIVINE LIGHT, WANTS US TO BE. WE AS HUMANS MUST BEHAVE AS IF ALL OUR RAGE AND HATRED OF OTHERS, WILL HURT AND DESTROY OUR SOULS!

This is a very good summary on Christian Mystic. The purging for me was on shame, fear, rage and then purging on hopelessness, nothingness and powerlessness. The illumination creates these different educational principles and mainly learning to just let go. The dark night, for me, is this weaning from needing to accomplish and achieve. The dark night creates little concern with doing and being whatever I believe will make me feel worthwhile, such as having success, achieving goals, building myself up and winning rewards. There is no role to play nor can I make the role valuable. There is no purpose, which is why it is a dark night. For me the dark night has become this transparency bridge and the real transformation is needing to draw upon a Deeper Source and being unable to do it. It is like moving from a state of consciousness to a stage of consciousness and the stage is empty, which creates this powerlessness within. The stage seems to be setting up Divine Union and to allow the ego to slow down and rest, as the stage becomes this awareness of Being itself as the source of this identity as Essence. The stage is simply resting and the stage becomes real peace when nothing sticks in the consciousness. Serenity moves in and the stage becomes this acceptance of the conditions I am working with, nothingness. When I am in acceptance and serenity the stage seems to allow the energies of life to flow without this need to resist or trying to control this emptiness. This Divine Union as this nobility of love I know not, as I am still adjusting to this empty stage. The stage right now is serenity into powerlessness and is just this place to begin.

@Solomon: Man. That was brilliantly, wonderfully expressed. I also feel the emptiness, that sense of infinity and wonder. It used to hit me sporadically when I was younger, and I remember it would just stop me in my tracks and I’d just stop and stare off not knowing where I was, who I was, or what or where any of this place is. Know what I mean? I bet you do. Now I know exactly what to do to trigger it, and then I stay there. I do that because when that nothingness feeling first started to occur, there’d be anxiety. It was also wondrous and interesting, but I’d start thinking of a responsibility or some concern of mine to snap myself out of it and get “back aboard Earth.” At some point I read a Zen practitioner that said when that happens, when you slip into that, to STAY there as long as you can. So I started to do that. Now I go in and out of infinity at will. It’s very strange, and it has been the most interesting thing about my life. These things are what I’m most interested in. I can understand your struggle. Can we all completely surrender like Ramana Maharshi did? We have to live in the world, raise our families, work and have goals to a degree. But that zone is always there, calling us. And as I get older I sit and watch all the trees and plants here in my forest blowing to and fro in the stormy wind and just stare off as I melt into nothingness. And then there’s the explosions of light in and around and the tears of joy that I want so much to share and tell others of but really can’t. Your comment is five years old. I wonder… how are you doing, Solomon? Holler back when you can. I’m interested in your vision since you wrote this masterpiece. Aloha. 🤙🏽

Some (institutional) Christians are very opposed to this idea though, which I really don’t understand. They see union with the divine as heretical, as well as methods like meditation. But even Jesus said “the kingdom of heaven is within you”. He also said “if thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light” (the third eye.) There is a lot of mysticism in Jesus words, but some modern Christianity strips all the mysticism from the Bible because they see it as heretical.

Superlative! Thank you, Brother Marc, for this succinct yet meticulous introduction to the world of Christian mystics. You're one of the best I've seen at teaching the mystic way. I've noticed a somewhat alarming trend today with many advocates of Christian mysticism that tends to omit the miraculous component that was always extant in the lives the ancient, medieval and renaissance mystics. They seem to believe that one can achieve union of the soul with God without the natural consequence of miraculous gifts and prophetic oracles. Nowadays, if one can write flowery spiritual poetry or engaging essays about sublime piety, that alone is deemed enough to encapsulate authentic mysticism. This appears, to me, to be a subtle and dangerous drift from the beauty of true Christian mystagogy which is always accompanied by some sort of preternatural phenomena.

I believe in the divine, because of an experience I had, not that I understand it all, but I know that there is a heavenly presence amongst us. The problem is that I have not cultivated this experience, so I live day to day like everyone else. But I enjoy life and wait for slipping into the unknown. I think St. John of the Cross is a great example. He gives an account of darkness making us acutely aware of the smallest light.

What you presented here is ingenious. I have been a practitioner of Buddhism, especially in the esoteric traditions (Vajrayana), for years due to my affinity with the Buddhist traditions. However, what you have presented here is similar to many steps of the mystical path, even in the Buddhist path. As a naturopathic doctor, I understand the importance of fasting, meditation in solitude and the love towards living beings. The consequence of such practices can bring us closer to the divine. I think this is the true religion--a personal connection to the divine. When politics and ego get in the way, however, it taints the essence and purpose of the spiritual path. Thank you for presenting this. Now, I am reading the Bible and when I see it as a map of the spirit, there is not much difference from my Buddhist learnings--only words and terms. I do wish and pray for more insights and path towards becoming closer to Divine Union. Thank you for your work.

@Roblox Lua Christian mysticism teaches that one must leave the world and its passions in search for God. Moses left the Israelites 9n the bottom of the mountain in order to attain the ten commandments. He went up the mountain. The image we see is a pointed top and a wide base that makes up a mountain. Defined and Devine truth is found at the top symbolized by the pointed top, while the bottom only offers subjective "truth" that man must make for themselves. Such was the golden calf. But to seek God and not be satisfied until He reveals truth- that is Christian mysticism. After all Christ is defined as the "one greater than Moses." Moses was a precursor to Christ. It would only be normal for Christvto spend 40 days in the wilderness, just as Moses spent 40 days on the mountain.

@Roblox Lua Yes it is union with God, but the means of this union is through prayer, silence/solitude and several other spiritual disciplines such as reading the scriptures, fasting, giving, and let us not forget the Eucharist. Yes, Jesus is God. But in his humanity, He too needed to have union with the Father through the Spirit.
@JoshAlicea1229
@JoshAlicea1229 4 жыл бұрын
@Roblox Lua First off, we are not getting transcendent knowledge. We are not Gnostics. Remember Christ was fully human AND fully God. In His humanity, He had to gain direction and insight from God the Father through the Spirit. He came to show us the way to union with God and make the Holy Spirit available. Prayer and meditation are inseparable. True prayer contemplates and meditates. Just talking to God is never true union, nor is it always effective. God always knows our hearts and our intentions. I forget who said it but look up the quote- "Prayer is the burden of a sigh; a falling of a tear. An upward glancing of an eye when none but God is near." Sometimes prayer is to learn from God, or it is a pouring out of emotion. Either way it is authentic. God meets us in our prayer. Hence, it is a discipline that leads to union with God. To your second point, through the Spirit, we partake in the divine nature, but we never become divine.Think of steel that is placed in a fire. The properties of fire are heating and lighting. As the steel sits in the fire, it begins to glow, thus giving off light and it is heated, thus giving off heat. Though the steel shares in these properties of lighting and heating, it never becomes fire, but always remains steel.

@Roblox Lua Union with God is the forgotten doctrine of the west. Luther, Calvin, Owen... all of them talked about it. Life in the Holy Spirit let's us see that we were not only crucified, buried and resurrected with Christ. But we are seated with Christ in heavenly places, (ascension). There is a truth that He is always present, but He, through prayer and us "closing the door and meeting God, who is unseen," we have a deeper understanding of His closeness in us and us in Him.
@JoshAlicea1229
@JoshAlicea1229 4 жыл бұрын
@Roblox Lua Well, what is union in marriage? Two become ONE flesh. True unity with God. The difference between knowing things about God, and actually knowing God. We are "In Christ." Paul says, no one knows the mind of God but the Spirit of God." When the Spirit fully inhabits the body. We are a continuation of the Incarnation. That is why it was better that Christ, the Man, went back to the Father; it was the only way He can truly stay with us and in us and continue to save humanity. That is union with Christ. He still lives today, not just at the right hand of the Father but in us, and we in Him.

This makes a lot of sense for me . it’s not an easy path to walk but it seems once it is started and you see reality there isn’t a way to turn back . easiest way would be to live a hermit life . But it’s not conducive. Especially the way the world is now . It is a hard path but the rewards are incendiary. i can barely imagine how I survived without God before . I don’t know why I deserve this path but I am thankful ✨

I am a mystic that believes in Christian Universalism meaning that we will all be Reconciled to God through Jesus Christ. God bless I Timothy 4:10-11 NKJV For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. These things command and teach.

the fact that you married "mystic", "Christian", "Universalism" and "Jesus" in one sentence sickens me. like, ew “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." Matthew 7:13-14. not all are saved "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16. salvation requires belief, without which no-one can be saved

@@deeveevideos oh, hii! reread my comment and maybe the tone was a bit harsh? still mean it, just coulda said it better. these views just don't align with the Bible as a whole anyway, faith is one's own. i would also say that faith comes from hearing of Jesus the Messiah, the real one described in the Bible, but yes, it is one's own decision to believe or not believe. (and i mean "comes from" in a "because you were presented with this evidence and then choose to believe it" typa way) it is one's faith... in Christ

@@thando6109 to be fair the Bible doesn't have a view, people have view of the Bible. And because of that people can interpret it in multitude of different ways. The way I view it is the way Jesus said we have a good father in heaven. That even us who are evil know how to give our kids good gifts how much more would our heavenly father give us. And then the gospel is said to be good news, what happens to those who hear it and don't believe versus those who never hear it at all?
@thando6109
@thando6109 Жыл бұрын
@@deeveevideos hi again. that's a weird thing to say. what do you mean by view? like i really don't get what you mean. because saying that kinda implies that there isn't a right way to interpret the Scriptures, or that God had nothing concrete to convey in these texts written down and preserved; that, ultimately, the Bible is meaningless or arbitrary if its meaning is whatever the reader decides. or perhaps you mean in this particular context. either way, the Bible does "have a view". a clear view. on lots of things. sin. marriage. morality. eternity. the nature of God. the atonement of Jesus Christ and to whom it applies. because statements like, "Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son." (John 3:18) have a correct meaning. yes, there can be alternative interpretations but that does not nullify the existence of truth and the Author's intent nor does it imply that any other view, because it exists, is valid. you can read Romans 1 also, the rest of John 3, John 15, 17, for example, and see that the Bible contains words. these words have meaning and these meaningful words strung together make clear claims. looking at the Bible as a whole even, the view is God made man and all things. man rebelled, severing the relationship between God and mankind, and continues to. God hates sin and justly condemns man to death---it's what we deserve for wronging others and ourselves and, most of all, disobeying God. but God, throughout the pages of the word, saves those who believe and obey Him---ultimately in Jesus---from their *deserved* judgement.

This might have been enhanced by expanding the experience of mysticism beyond the relatively narrow constraints of Christianity. Mysticism is a human experience that transcends western thought - Hunduism and Buhdism both have rich mystic traditions - that connection between different human tribes to engage in 'higher thought' is a richer vein to tap into.

Avsolutely agreed Gerard! We find, though, that the vast majority of those who identify as Christian are often unaware of the mystical strand within their own tradition, and can become a kind of gateway toward greater curiosity and interest to those mystical strands, whether Advaita, Sufism and others outside the tradition. We also have teachers in our community who tech on those traditions, but that was beyond the scope of this video, which is the opening of a course specifically on the Christian mystics.

Contemplative Prayer begin with monastic monks experimenting with prayer practices they observed Buddhist and Hindus doing. Therefore, contemplative prayer is a pagan prayer practice. When one does what pagans do then one gets what pagans get. Pagans worship demons. 1 Timothy 4:1 is to be applied to Contemplative Prayer for it is the doctrine of demons. Anyone who is a Holy Spirit filled believer will be corrected and rescued from engaging in Contemplative Prayer. Anyone who defends it is spiritual deceived and undiscerning. Pray for Hebrews 5:14. -Blessings from Tajji in Tanzania (See videos by Ray Yungen: A Time of Departing....Excellent research on the truth about Contemplative Prayer.)

For a broad overview, you can't do better than Evelyn Underhill's book Mysticism. A little more scholarly are A Course In Christian Mysticism by Thomas Merton, and The Origins Of The Christian Mystical Tradition by Andrew Louth. Bernard McGinn compiles readings from primary sources and Carl McColman has several much more accessible, less scholarly overviews. For a more practical entry point, Richard Rohr's The Naked Now: Seeing As The Mystics See is very good!

According to the Orthodox mystical experiences for the sake of ecstasy or visioning Jesus or Saints is a type of spiritual delusion to be avoided. The standard Apophatic model embraced by Catholicism is the god is a being without being (without matter, aphysical, lacking light, sound). According to the definition of the occult mystical experience without some sort of temperance mechanism (religion or science) is occult behavior. Contextually certain groups practice a meditative stance that produces visions. The book of acts mentions profane visions. No one knows what Christ or the Virgin Mary looked like, saying that you saw either of these and heard there voices in English is profane. Practiced mystics seek to dispel such visions in search of an inner profoundness. I am not Orthodox but I appreciate their concern.
