@GenXGrownUp they may have done well in the past...but i think they will immediately become obsolete once people start getting expanded systems. I got an evercade recently, and I can't stop playing it. It's hands down the best bar top arcade I have ever touched. And the fact you can customize and swap out the marquis and get up to 500 games it's like I wouldn't recomend or touch any other unit. I basically just gave away mynarcade 1 up crap, so inferior. Any everyone that has seen and played the evercade has agreed. It's that good. Maybe why their sold out a msrp...

Usually, BandaiNamco is quite strict on how you use their content so it does not surprise me that My Arcade is using a closed architecture. They have to protect their licenses. I'm sure someone will find a way to expand it but I completely understand why they would close it off.

I like the spinner - we NEED one for a few games like Tempest. Spinners, if hooked up and made properly are one of the BEST controllers - both for games and some applications. Tempest arcade was the best since you could (if mastered it) twirl around the cursor and shoot, knowing exactly what you were doing. And it'd take abuse forever that'd wear out the potentiometer based "Paddles" quickly. Note a spinner does NOT use contact normally - they usually just measure velocity with alternating photosensors to tell what direction and how fast you spin it - and have some weight under them so they can be twirled freely and rapidly. For later arcade games there were lots of games, notably Data East - that had the rotary function in the joystick so your character could aim but move - such as Ikari Warriors, Victory Road, Gain Ground, Midnight Resistance... Those were fantastic games but suffered in later 'retro' sales and even MAME since few home controllers had even the extra buttons for it - the thumb/back R/L usually. Thus I presume the spinner will be for such games - also could be a good menu select. Probably will be not quite as good due to price/weight but if it can move pretty freely will make some classic games more playable and help menu select functions.

@@jonniefast my point exactly. I have a VCS, and it has several versions of Tempest. And yes, the classic controller is no substitute for a real spinner. Tempest keeps getting bundled with things, like Atari 50, and yet, no real spinner. The Atari VCS really needs a console controller with track ball, spinner, paddle, steering wheel. It needs to be use and work with VCS, every console that runs Atari 50. Retro Atari games that didn't have a joystick do not work correctly without their original controllers.

My only complaint about what I'm seeing is that its very clear it will use the generic Micro Player shape. Which itself is not bad, but I'd like to see it stand out a bit shape-wise. Try to do, say, a squished Dynamo like they did with the Street Fighter Champion Edition Micro Player. The Dynamo being a non-specific cabinet suits the diverse nature of the lineup, while its association with Street Fighter II also makes it ideal for use with a product making a big deal out of having Capcom titles. That being said, if the price it right and the quality good...I'll grab one.

My Arcade had put out a Namco Premium Arcade Player a few years ago, along with a Data East Premium Player. This is along those lines, and not everyone has, or even heard of Evercade, especially since it's a UK based company. I doubt the price point of this will be $250, but who knows. It's really a toss up, to be honest. With Evercade you get expandability with the cartridge slots. With the MyArcade unit, you get a beefier selection of built-in games. Also you get a spinner, meaning you can play a wider variety of games (both spinner games, as well as driving games). It's also worth noting that Evercade only ever made two Namco cartridges, and both of them include the home versions of the games (It's not guaranteed that the MyArcade unit is going to include arcade versions of the Namco games, but there's the possibility that they might). Really it's going to come down to your own personal collection. If you've got a large collection of Evercade carts, then the Alpha is going to be more appealing. If you're new to retro gaming (be it either rediscovering the games of your youth, or being a younger person learning about these games for the first time), something like the MyArcade might be the way to go.
@cryptocoffee132 күн бұрын
@@tom11zz884 there's a lot of them out there, but they're selling. Evercade users debating this over the Alpha, should probably get the Alpha if they have some carts already I would say. Being a closed system, I can't think of a Bandai or Capcom game that requires a trackball.

the entire line of products just seems like a stocking stuffer that family members purchase on impulse for their "gamer" relatives 😢

What Capcom or Bandai games need a trackball?

Would be great if a detachable controller with the spinner is offered and is (also) compatible with the Atari Gamestation Pro. I'd buy that in a heartbeat. But I'm not interested in a Capcom/Namco locked system.

Yet potentially no SD card support, that will slice a significant amount of people interested to take their wallet elsewhere. If I had to throw some speculations out there - My Arcade *might* have been pressured into this decision to make it a closed system. I'm not saying it'll be a bad product though, just not one I'll be investing in I think.. It's early days however so it may turn out to be completely different when we see it face to face huh?

I suspect this is a requirement of the licensors considering My Arcade's willingness to include expansion in other products. It might only damage sales among the most ardent hobbyists like us, though. It's important to remember that the vast majority of the gaming public doesn't know what a ROM is, let alone where to obtain one and how to use it to expand a toy they purchase at retail.

It's a fine decision. Software companies don't like piracy. I would have done the same thing.

I'd say that control deck lacks a trackball for games like Missile Command, but that might be only needed on the Atari branded version. Perhaps they need a mega player with swappable components on the control deck? Track Ball, Spinner, steering wheel, second joy stick for two player games... While the products coming out are impressive, they always miss something.

No one product can be all things to all consumers. Always room for improvement.

@@GenXGrownUp I would disagree. The VCS console could be everything. It would run every retro game currently being put on all these mini devices, and it could have every possible controller. It's got usb ports. The only thing we lack is a spinner and a trackball for the VCS.

Anyone can cut out something out of wood and install joysticks, spinners, and buttons. What counts is what it can do when turned on. Still vaporware for now.
