I really enjoyed you intro to your Lion, made in Bulgaria, I worked in a shop here in Central Florida in 2010 that had this same machine..made in Bulgaria... .I think it was a bit longer though....it did not have the Lion importer/distributor name plate... the other name plates had the same issue as yours as most anodized aluminum ones do....hard to read I believe the Machine was from the 1970's but I'm not sure on that, but it is still operating... the shop started in 1934 .. the only issue I ever saw was issue with he electrical, the machine was over 30 years old at the time..... the very large spindle bore was great and very useful....and the gap bed came in very handy also.... Best Wishes on your lathe and its resurrection....Paul in Orlando

I haven't had any dealings with a Lion lathe. I have 3 LeBlond's and I love them. I have completely rebuilt the 17 x 120 and the 13 x 36. The 13 x 72 is at my sons shop and my grandson uses it. When I get a chance, I will trade him for one of these that I have in my shop and rebuild thar one. I look froward to watching the rebuild of this old Lion!!! Make it roar!!!

I want to correct some couple of things. The fabricator is ZMM not lion . Lion is the importer . The spindle is Din 55027 . Is the same as camlock , same taper , same dimensions just different studs so you need just to make other studs and use camlock . I have done that . The older American machines doesn’t have heat treated ways this has , that is why no were. And the most important thing is the joystick control … is the best control ever

Halfway through the playlist which is great. Can you tell me the history of the lathe before the previous owner? I’m really interested as to how it got to the US and when. Was it after Glasnost ? Was it modified from 50 to 60 Hz or manufactured for sale in the US. Maybe it was built in the 90s. Just guessing.

Very nice score there. Perfect size to do some real work and not take up too much room. Bummer on the odd mounting system for chucks. I was told the reason Monarch and American had so small spindle thru holes was because they used larger spindle bearings than other manufactures.

Not knowing as I do not do machining, but if you cant get a back plate due to it being european, is that not something you could make with a milling machine and lathe?

17:09 In Chicago area, is there large scale: building of infrastructure (utilities, railways, roads, houses, bridges, tunnels, factories, warehouses), ore mining, oil/gas industry, solar energy, shipbuilding, wheat and other grain growing, livestock farming, winemaking, fruit growing, etc that would bring 10+ foot turning jobs? You mentioned Kurtis. All across Australia there is, and will be, many such industries locally. All are large scale industries there. Australia has wealth of resources rest of world direly needs. Australians will need an massive infra building just for their military in future to keep their wealth secured. Chinese already have to buy nearly everything Aussies produce.
@VanoverMachineAndRepair5 ай бұрын
There are those big jobs but a majority of work is less than that. I am sure there is enough work to be had. Seen lots of big lathes a shops (long) but those lathe also sit 90 percent of time. Catch 22 I guess. I’ll get a bigger one someday but it’s a big investment that would probably pay off over time but until then I’ll work with this lathe until then.

i'm a total noob, never touched a lathe in my life, so please pardon the question if it should be obvious - why can't you machine a new spindle mount? it sounds like that issue is going to end up costing a lot of time in chuck swaps over the years.
@VanoverMachineAndRepair9 ай бұрын
You would need to machine an entire new spindle ideally. You could run an adapter but ideally you want the chuck as close to bearings as possible. For rigidity
