Playstation is currently attempting to emulate the PS3 games onto the newer hardware so they can resell more collections again, but full backwards compatability is almost impossible considering the architecture of PS3's Cell Processor and the fact PS4 and PS5 Don't use Cell and use X-86 instead. Unless they restart cell research (they wont) we will never be able to put a ps3 disc in a new console and have it be able to actually read the disc the way you'd want it to.

HDMI provides better video quality and wireless controllers are more convenient, while you can still use the controller while it's connected. Meanwhile no disc drive is a step back. I feel the pain of those users who are desperately clinging to physical media but I have to be honest with you, you are fighting an already lost battle. There is no going back and Disc Drives will always be an add-on from now on until eventually phased away. These guys make business decisions based on data and sadly the data shows that only a minority of the userbase actually use their disc drives to play games. I am one of the majority who never play games on disc, haven't bought a disc game in 10+ years, but I really do empathize with you.

The tragic irony is the PS2 was so successful because it was a DVD player. The PS3 being a bluray player was a huge thing too. PS5 being able to play PS4 discs was also huge and a big reason a lot of people were happy to upgrade. This all-digital future will basically make the console completely obsolete. At this point you may as well just get a PC and ignore the consoles, they offer nothing now.

A better idea: A PS5 that has a disc drive that is backward compatible for all consoles all the way to PS1. Nobody cares about a system with PSone aesthetics if it has nothing else to do with the system you're claiming to celebrate. At the very least, you could have added a bunch of PSone games to the store that would be free if you purchased the system. It boggles my mind how they didn't come up with that.

Also I think it would have been cooler for them to bring back the classic DualShock with a few modern tweaks such as USB-C charging, DualShock 3 style triggers but adaptive, DualSense vibration motors, DualSense gyro, the light up player indicator being multicolor, accessory port and headphone jack on the bottom, share button above the PS button or on the back of the controller, mute button below the PS button or also on the back of the controller and attachable touchpad that connects like the DualShock 3 Wireless Keypad, rather than just a DualSense with a classic style. I know that the original DualShock is outdated and having the newer features would be kinda complicated, but it would also be more interesting as even Nintendo has released classic controllers with technology that make them compatible with the latest hardware such as the NSO controllers. And if they can't fit the newer technology, they should make the system backwards compatible with PS1-PS3 titles.

Sadly, this is the way things are going, not just Sony but pretty much every single company is pushing towards this direction. Media in general will be, from what I believe, completely digital in a few years. I love myself some physical media, gives me a sense of ownership and something really nice to look at and to collect. Guess that's why I love retro stuff so so much.

It seems like Sony is now sending out unnumbered promo units of the 30th Anniversary Edition PS5 Pro as a gesture of thanks to influencers who’ve helped promote their brand. While that’s understandable, it also proves that they’re capable of producing more of these consoles without the exclusivity of numbering. Sony, don’t forget your loyal fanbase-the ones who’ve supported you through the years. Consider making more of these units available for fans, but without numbering them. This approach would preserve the exclusivity for the initial 12,300 owners while disarming scalpers and maintaining goodwill with your community. A win-win for everyone! I don’t understand this obsession that people have with disc drives. All of my PlayStation consoles have functioned perfectly EXCEPT for the disc drives. They’re the only component that I’ve ever had issues with. PS4 didn’t even save you any space to use discs. I haven’t bought a physical game since Dark Souls 3 over eight years ago. The only advantage to having the discs is that you have them forever if something happens, which is extremely unlikely. Unlike with music (which I always make a point to physically get), there aren’t severe licensing issues with games. There’s no incentive or reason for them to disappear from the store.

@@IcyAuron Really... no licensing issues... did you ever ask yourself why there are so few of the thousands of PS1 and PS2 titles available in the PS store? Could it have something to do with licenses for music / assets / engines / libraries etc. that have expired? Maybe? Not to mention that you leave the decisions which old games to make available to Sony. And of course, the obvious one, you're completely dependent on the availability of PSN. What if Sony goes out of business in 5 years, and PSN shuts down forever? Where's your game collection then? Remember the people who "bought" games at full price on Stadia?
