You remind me of an old cabinet maker/ carpenter in my youth who taught me how to use an inside reading folding rule. A nice little trick you just taught us. I thank you sir.

real lead pencils are not actually the element lead. what you probably mean is soft graphite, like a 2b or softer, as used in woodworking. "office" pencils are usually HB, for making sharp marks on paper.

Thanks for the great tip. I always appreciate the willingness of trades to share their secrets. Now that I'm older and travel with my tools often, I like how light weight and compact it is.

Elizabeth L.Johnson said, Oh, I've got to make one for my husband. He's always needing something to write on at the job site. I find blocks of wood with notes on them in the front seat of his truck, or walls(bare sheet rock, sometimes on studs) with phone numbers, etc. written in pencil. Your square is so much more useful, too!!! Great video! I understood your explanations very well.

Brilliant. I used to do the same but with a throw away piece of luan or 1/8" marine. :)

You can get a reasonably priced piece of 1/8" PVC plastic sheet at Amazon (affiliate link in description above). It will be glossy when new. I recommend that you give the gloss some "etch" with the finest sandpaper you have. That will make it easier to write on. The MEDIUM (green) Sandflex sanding block is also ideal for initial etching of the surface, as well as "erasing" the pencil marks.

Elizabeth L. Johnson said, 300 grit too fine? I need one for use down at my minibed garden!! I'm always having to rush back up to the house to find my memo pad.

I am confused on "real" lead. Plumbum or regular graphite?

Isn't that just a number 2 pencil? I don't believe lead has been used in pencils for many decades. I think they are referred to as leads in drafting but in actuality, it's just graphite. I am aware that drafting pencils come in many different hardnesses, but a number 2 is the most common because of its softness and ease of writing.

Have you considered gluing a PVC strip (1/2"x5" maybe) to one edge as a reference edge for square? It would reinforce the hanger hole too.

What did you use to cut it? Whenever I cut plastic the cut is jagged and rough. How did you get such a nice clean straight cut? Thanks in advance!

Some great tips, Herrick. Over here in the UK I could not find white PVC board but they do have white acrylic sheet which is similar I think. Would that do?
@herrickkimball

Hmmm. I don’t think a pencil will write on acrylic. If it doesn’t, you could apply 2” wide masking tape on the acrylic and write on that. Remove the tape when you want to make a clean new taped surface. 🤔👍

I came to the comments section to ask what you meant "real lead" and see that the question has already been asked more than once but not answered. PLEASE TELL US WHETHER YOU MEAN LEAD LIKE I A BULLET OR GRAPHITE OR SOMETHING ELSE.
