I have a love /hate relationship going here. I love the new Koa guitars but hate it when they are so far out of my budget range. I am a Koa nut too. I have the T5z custom Koa, The GS Mini Koa and had the 224ce Koa..( but traded it for the T5z). At $4600.00, we are in divorce court territory. I assume this guitar can't make pancakes. So as much as I really enjoy your reviews...this one has put me in trouble...thanks!

@boutique533 жыл бұрын
I own one and love it! It's an ideal fingerstyle guitar. One of the reasons the K21e costs so much is because of the wood it's built from. Koa is becoming increasingly rare and expensive. Wouldn't be surprised to see Koa become unobtainable eventually. So you're paying a premium for the rarity of the wood, the same way you pay a premium for Brazilian Rosewood. Taylor has the same GT body size available in Urban Ash and rosewood/Sitka. Lower prices, same body size, but vastly different tone. Of the three GT models, the Koa version sounds best to my ear.

Just to put things in perspective guys. A set of solid wood Koa sides and back, including a nicely figured soundboard in this quality and figure is at least 800 to a grand as raw material alone, count in the neck (AA quality at least) and fretboard, the curfling, binding, braces, frets and finish you end up between a grand and 1300 quit just for the raw materials and the tuners alone. Okay? Now, count in decently payed man-hours for such a meticulously handmade specimen, the tool wear ( router blades, saw blades etc.), power consumption and put a profit margin on top and the profit for the seller (store). There you go! Now, ask yourself how some low budget companies make 100$ guitars possible.

Do you think they would ever do a 12-Fret version of either the Rosewood or the the Koa? That would be the ultimate...
@1funkybasslady2 жыл бұрын
I doubt they would ever do a 12-fret in either rosewood or koa because they already make the 812ce 12-fret in both wood choices, and they are in the same price category. Those instruments are very close in size to the GT K21e. I have the 812ce Deluxe 12-fret, and I’ve played the koa version. I prefer the tone of the 812ce. The two 12-fret guitars are equal in comfort and playability to this new GT K21e. I almost sold my 812ce 12- fret, but I just couldn’t do it as it is one of the most wonderful guitars I have ever owned. That guitar will go to the grave with me. Conclusion: I have both! I just bought the GT K21e for its unique tone and its wonderful playability, comfort and beauty. Pricey? Yes, but the quality of construction and materials is second to none, and it is a great guitar, so to me it is worth the money. I have had some pretty fabulous guitars like Martin D-45 Custom Shop, D41 and D-42. They sounded fabulous, but they were very difficult for me to handle with their huge size. My greatest wish is to be able to find a guitar that sounds like those wonderful guitars - in a small body. Mission Impossible!

Does anyone else think Taylor has made a right hash of naming the GT guitars? The original GT is American Dream spec, same price point (even if different back & side woods) yet you have to search for it in different sections of any music store website (Anderton's, which is local to me, for example). They then group the 811 & K21 with the basic GT when they belong in the 800 and K series and the basic GT belongs with the AD17 & 27. The only major difference is the shape, the same as between any other two models in the same series. Also ... with these two new series that cost less than some of Taylor's 200 series, are they going to be scaling that back? Is there any advantage to paying for some of those laminate body guitars when you can get an all-solid GT or AD?

This is a very nice guitar, possibly too nice for me on a small all-around guitar. When looking at a GT 811E and comparing it to a Taylor 812ce 12 fret, the 811e was more balanced, the 812ce more bass. Fingerings was easier for me on the GT. @@kinlerj It’s not that different from a 312ce at $1,999 vs. a K22ce at $4,999.
