That song is truly a masterpiece. Thanks for featuring it. It's really interesting that you point out there's everything Chicago brings in this song except for their vocal harmonies. I'd never noticed that before. Also, thanks you for pointing out Peter Cetera's bass mastery. His sound brings so much to the overall Chicago sound. I love his melodic, sometimes playful, sometimes in-your-face work.

Terry Kath was an incredible musician and singer. Poem 58 on that debut album showcases his guitar mastery, and what Jimi Hendrix meant when he told CTA "You guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs, AND A GUITAR PLAYER THAT'S BETTER THAN ME!" The original lineup of Chicago is my all-time favorite band. I discovered them as a kid going through my older brother's music collection when he enlisted in the armed forces in the early 70's and left his stuff in our house, and I found Chicago and Chicago III in his collection. Right from then I was hooked and had to get each new Chicago album when they were released. 25 or 6 to 4 is the reason why at age 60 I STILL want to learn how to play it on guitar and just bought my first Strat.

@@ACGC.MusicRadio Yes I have watched it. I bought the disc of the special Terry's daughter Michelle produced. Those old home movies Terry made on tour, her search for her dad's famous Pignose stickered Telecaster. Add to that the fact Terry was mostly self-taught and couldn't read sheet music, requiring James Pankow to transcribe for the band what Terry composed, starting with Introduction. He was a true musical genius in what he could come up with and his techniques that inspired future guitar greats.

CTA hit the shelves the spring of 1969 when I was in 9th grade. A classmate brought the album into the band room, placed it on the stereo turntable, and set it to playing, cranking it up LOUD! Wow, just wow! Both the Cadet band (8th & 9th grade) director and Senior band (9th-12th grade) directors hustled out of their adjoining office to put a stop to the noisy ruckus, but were stopped in their tracks by the stunning music we were all experiencing. Everyone in that room was a Chicago fan by the time this one song ended.

Absolutely Love your enthusiasm here on this absolute masterpiece. And I never tire of this song. That being said, Terry Kath couldn't read music, but he had this entire song in his head. He audibly worked it out with Trombonist James Pankow who transcribed it into music, AMAZING. These guys were 20-21-22 years old (think of it!) And LAST but not least the drummer has a name! Danny Seraphine! Chicago's incredible Jazz chops would not have been legit without this at the time 20 year old kid. A kid that in very short time caught the ear of the great Buddy Rich.

Your observations are spot on. I'm 61 and was introduced to Chicago by "barrowing" my elder sisters albums, (and never gave back). The first 3 albums were doubles, who does that ? I've seen them many, many times throughout the years. My last show was the historic first Chicago/EWF tour. The boys have aged and theirs only 3 original members in the group now and in my opinion they sound tired. No disrespect to them, hell all are north of 70 now and still doing over 200 shows a year. I love this group and always will. If you want to see a truely honorable Chicago Cover band check out Leonid and Freinds from Russia. They have a fresh energized take on the tunes and their live shows are fenominal...

This is and always has been my favorite Chi track. While Jimmy Pankow's Ballet For A Girl In Buckhannon from the next album is a musical masterpiece as well and two of its movements, Make Me Smile and Colour My World, have long been Chicago classics, I think this song accomplishes much of what the Ballet does but in a more concise way. Terry was an absolute monster of a musician and, for me, this song says pretty much everything about Terry and this band that you'll ever need to know.

In first minute they go from blues, rock, to classical (prog), to jazz while keeping groove. Took me 50 years of life to intellectually develop the ear for the world's greatest releases of which I sung to as a child in the early 70's (1st and 2nd albums). By the way, Chicago's ballad parts (1970's) were the necessary spice to the band. Added flavor to their music like salt does to a perfectly prepared steak.

People forget there was a ton of musical fusion going on all over the pop world at this time. Miles Davis was laying out In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew in quick succession. You had Chicago bringing in experimental jazz and soul style horns along with other greats such as Jeff Beck, Santana and Jack Bruce. Frank Zappa and The Mother's we're out there doing their musical theory based concoctions. It was a great experimental era in popular music reflecting back what was going on in society and culture.

I first heard Chicago when WNAP, an AOR FM station in Indy, played CTA all the way through one night. I was hooked big time. I think the band was on a steady upward trajectory through the first 3 albums (Chicago III is amazing), plateaued for albums 5-8 and then started a steady decline in new material. The live album featured insanely good performances but was torpedoed by the crappy sound. The death of Kath, drugs, the Foster/Cetera ballad years really put paid to the band's development. In particular, losing Kath was the inflection point as he was the spiritual leader. Yes, Cetera was an amazing bassist but he was also apparently a head case who fractured the band. Then they fired Seraphine and that was it. But, they finally pulled themselves together in the 90's with the addition of Tris Imboden, finally settling on Keith Howland and adding Lou Pardini. I agree for a band's first track, Introduction is the winner.

"Purple Haze" was the debut album opener on Are You Experienced?, but I still would agree with you. That song is nowhere near indicative of where Jimi would go nor did it exhibit and/or showcase his potential. Also, "the drummer" is Danny Seraphine. I feel his name needed to be mentioned in your references to the drums, because he is a freakin legend. To me, it was kind of a bummer you didn't name him or any other members of the band except Peter and Terry. And a bit odd. Fun fact: Peter quit playing the bass of his own volition when the band began working with David Foster. He also insisted he was the face of the band. The brunt of criticism he receives is deserved. And I have never heard anyone call Terry Kath overrated. That's interesting. Glad you like the track, but a little research may do you some good for the next one. Appreciate the video as this is one incredible album. 🙌

Thank you for sharing, and commenting… Actually, on my copy of are you experienced, the first track is foxy Lady. Either way, it doesn’t fully represent Jimi Hendrix… We can agree on that. So, forgive me, if I don’t hit every trigger point that you might expect. I’ve done several Chicago videos, since I started this channel, and have absolutely mentioned other members of the band. Oh, believe me, I really appreciate your comments, and your interacting on this post. That’s a big part of why I even started this channel in the first place.
