Introduction to and threading a Singer 31-32 / 31k32. First time sewing

The Singer 31 is an industrial sewing machine. With many variations there are some things exactly the same. Like the system it uses (oscillating hook) and the needles (16x87 when connected to a motor and 16x73 when in operation on a treadles stand)…
This video is on the 31-32 and/or the 31k32 (the K stands for the Singer factory in Kilbowie). It is a brief introduction to a great machine. I will show you how to thread the machine and tell you which needles you can use with it. What you make with it is up to you!

Hi Filipe. Value... it's difficult. It all has to do with location and availability. In my area the machines are cheap. I got the head of a 1925 Singer 31k32 for 40 euros. A month later I found a 1924 Singer 31k32 in a treadle table for 60 euro or so. Later I saw similar models for even less. But I also saw them for more... The real value is what YOU want to pay for it, I think. I kept the head of the 1925 model 31k32 and put it into the table of the 1924 model 31k32. Then I bought a NEW motor. I think I can get little over 100 euros for it.

Hi Dani. You have some nice machines! As I recall the 31-15 has the same needle as the 31-32. I guess they all share the same needles in the 31-range since the mechanism is similar. Take care and have a wonderful day!

​@@danidepalma1300 Thank you so much for the compliment Dani! I used Avid Media Composer for many many many years. (My employer payed for the license.) A year ago I had to make a switch to Final Cut Pro X. It works, kind of.. :-) For voice over recording I use a Tascam DR60II recorder and a shotgun mic. I pre-edit that voice-over in WavePad before I edit the video. Editing sound/ audio is hard for me due to a hearing disability, so thank you for your message!!!

The 31k15 and 31k32 are in many ways the same. Biggest difference is: 31k32 kan back tag/ sew in reverse.

As far as I know: Yes. Loosen the screw underneath the bed. Never done it personally, so this is as far as my knowledge goes... Good luck, Erik

@@grittyinpink16 Yes you can replace it with a 'normal' leather replacement belt. But I recommend to replace it with a rubber belt.

I think I’m using the DPx5 needle in my 31k. You can give it a try. Worst thing that can happen is it doesn’t work. Good luck

@@erikneek I think there are 2 possibilities, if the needle is too long it can break and in addition it can damage the hook, or too short and then a stitch cannot be formed

@@staicu_dragos I would suggest to manually turn the machine slowly (with that needle inserted). If you want the be sure it fits you might want to join the Vintage Industrial Sewing machines Group on fb and ask your questions there too

@@erikneek the pressor foot only goes so high if it went high up this would be dope can you alter the walking foot to walk more

Ik moet even nakijken wat ik gebruik, maar mijn vermoeden is dat jij een zo'n dik mogelijk draad wil gebruiken. ---- Ik durf het echt niet te zeggen, heel eerlijk. Ik heb mijn aantekeningen nog even doorgelopen: De maximale naalddikte is maat 23. De maximale draaddikte ik afhankelijk van het materiaal, maar een snelle Google-search leert dat tex210 jouw max ongeveer zou moeten zijn. Succes!

Yes they are the same. The parts I ordered were for the 31-15 series and they do fit on the 31-32. The 31-32 is basically the same machine as a 31-15, only with a reverse. Enjoy your machine!!!

Hoi Erik, Daar ben ik weer!😂 Ik haalde net m'n spoelhuisje eruit om de spanning bij te stellen, en het mechanismetje komt er helemaal uit. En ik krijg hem er niet meer in.... Goed schoon gemaakt inclusief het inimini-veertje, maar hij wil niet meer.... Doe ik iets fout? Hij kan er maar op 1 manier in toch? Ik heb al gekeken naar een nieuwe, maar die moet uit de US komen voor 7 dollar + 24 dollar verzending....😢 Weet jij een adres dichterbij?

Wow, da's.... verdomd vervelend zeg. Ik zou ook voor een 'nieuwe' gaan zoeken. Blij dat je dat ook doet. Ik heb voorheen een set van 2 gekocht op Ali voor paar eurootjes, maar daar moet je lange tijd op wachten. Andere opties zijn de onderdelen-winkels in Engeland, zoals College Sewing. Er zijn nog een paar anderen. Let goed op de drempel, want een aantal van die bedrijven sturen je alleen spullen op als je meer dan een X-bedrag bestelt. Succes!

Dankjewel! Ik ga op college sewing kijken! De fb groep heeft me veel geleerd: oa dat ik een servomotor nodig heb....😅 de clutch die er nu onder zit vind ik erg moeilijk te controleren. Weet jij een adres voor een servomotor? En zijn er specificaties waar ik op moet letten? Alvast hartelijk dank weer!

@@michielmarleen De soort motor en specificaties hangt af waarvoor je het gebruikt. Zelf vind ik het leuk om kleine leerprojectjes te naaien. Een lage snelheid is voor mij belangrijk. Dus bedenk of voor jou de snelheid ook van belang is. Ik weet de specificaties van mijn motor niet precies, maar de laagst instelbare snelheid bij mij is 100 rpm. De ene keer heb ik mijn 31k32 erop met een rolvoet, de andere keer mijn 78-1 met een needle feed. Ik kan een korte video maken speciaal voor jou met het voorbeeld, maar dat kost wat tijd. (Ik heb een video over een 78-1 een paar maanden geleden op YT geplaatst met daarin ook een trage snelheid volgens mij...) Er zijn TALLOZE aanbieders zo lijkt het, maar vaak zijn het dezelfde motoren. Mijn motor kwam uit Tsjechië volgens mij, maar dat terzijde. Laat maar weten of je meer wilt weten over mijn motor of dat je zelf op zoek gaat. Groet'n!

Hoioi! Ik zou graag de specs van jouw motor weten, als je die nog kan vinden..😅 Snelheid is voor mij ook niet belangrijk: ik maak oa schoenen, dus precies en secuur naaien. Maar ik zou ook wel voldoende power willen om door dikkere lagen heen te komen. Die laagste 100 rpm, is dat dan de max als je vol gas geeft? Dank weer! Groet!

@@michielmarleen Ik ga het proberen uit te zoeken, welke motor ik heb. Inderdaad, als je 100 rpm hebt ingesteld en vol gas geeft, dan is de maximum snelheid 100 rpm. Stel je in op bijvoorbeeld 400 rpm, dan is de snelheid variabel - hoe verder je het pedaal indrukt, hoe sneller het gaat lopen (van 100 tot 400 rpm). Goed te weten dat een hogere instelling iets meer kracht kan geven. Dus als je er even moeilijker doorheen lijkt te komen, dan druk je vol in op 400 rpm, en laat meteen het 'gas' weer wat los. Ik kom bij je terug met de specs.

Hi Sasho. Congratulations! The 31-series is a great machine! Do you have a 31-32 too, or a different version? I did not have many problems with my Singer. Only one, but it was an operator error. And the operator (me) is the weakness-part. LOL The roller foot I bought was a cheap one form Aliexpress which is not the best you can buy... :-/ These machines were made to keep on working. It does! Give it some oil and it will not let you down! Enjoy!

@@azsamsasho Oops... don't know the exact length. I think it is the same as the max length of the 31-15 since the machines are very similar; 4,25 stitches per inch.

I don't understand. You say "The groove should be at the left side of the needle", but on the video it is opposite.. Groove should look inside as I understood. Can somebody also right down in comment what king of needls can we buy and if it is possible also links where is better to buy needles?
