Training film demonstrating the use of the Nike Hercules nuclear missile to protect the US against incoming Soviet aircraft. This is Reel 1 only (sorry, it just stops at the end of the Reel). These are high resolution images, made from 2K (2048x1556) DPX files which were scanned from the 35-mm original color negative and transferred to pillar boxed HD for viewing (some of the stock shots are funky).
The soundtrack was taken from a 16mm reference print so its not as pristine as the filmed image. This Nike Missile base is located at the north end of the Golden Gate bridge in Marin County just North of San Francisco.

In my hometown there’s a site that still has all three components still standing. The base was abandoned in 72’ due to SALT and now the control site is a paintball and airsoft arena. Site C-47 if anyone cares.

Yep, they are all over the place, hidden in plain sight. The one in the video is SF-88, now a museum. Open on Saturdays.

Now I know what's at the end of that transverse missile rail. Hercules was such a beauty.

When I eat a lot with people I usually say: "I grew up in the 80s and the nuclear apocalypse could come at any time, better with a full stomach";)

Wow, hoping to see the rest at some point; lovely quality on the scans, though. It seems they perhaps skimmed over the fact that some Nike Hercules missiles were armed with nuclear warheads with yields up to 40kt. I do wonder if there's mention in later reels of the Nike-Zeus ABM system, which was mid-development at the time (if I'm not mistaken, this would have been made somewhere around 1960).

I’ve been told that the Nike missiles could be used against ground targets say in the event of invasion, anyone know if this is true?

Yeah you just basically trick the missile into thinking the aircraft is underground.

@@abk4202020 Nike was intended to be deployed abroad. So, having a AGM contingency makes sense. I think Allies used these abroad as well. Japan and Greece at least. However, there was a real danger of where the booster would land in any emplacement. This affected placement around USA cities. But the nasties in the falling boosters was better than the alternative .

SA-2 couldn't reach out 90-100 miles and destroy a whole formation of patent-infringement.
