Now that we've gone over all the basics in our study of botany, it's time to start digging into some more advanced topics. First we will examine the field of dendrochronology over five tutorials. This is the study of trees over time, and as such, it is the study of tree rings. These are rings that are visible in the wood within a tree due to annual cycles of growth. The study of these rings has far more wide-reaching application than one would initially imagine, so let's get right into introducing this fascinating topic now!

Really looking forward to Professor Dave's deep dive into the fascinating topic of dendrochronology and adding to my knowledge of this topic.

I always have these random thoughts throughout the day which often lead to me wondering about something specific yet random and I absolutely love it when I look it up and I find a fairly recent upload on the very topic of my questions! It seems as though there’s a group of people out there who think relatively the same as I and roughly at the same time lol synchronicity at it’s finest

Prof Dave. I like to look into far out theories as a hobby. I've recently happened upon a new-ish theory that states that during the beginning of megafauna period, there were equally giant trees which were petrified due to the icy conditions post glaciation. Now people have been stating that the Devil's Tower is the 'stump' of such a tree. There are a couple of hypotheses that I want to test regarding this; a) If athroprods, during changing levels of oxygen, exhibit a maximum growth level due to inhibition regarding the structural strength of chitin - then, similarly in changing CO2 events; do cuticle containing plants have a maximum load bearing capacity with respect to the overall structure of the tree/plant? b) If these megaflora are similar to present day trees, do the petrified remains exhibit the same dendrochronology we find in modern stump patterns? c) Some claim that these petrified trees have centralized hydrocarbon complexes some of which contain amber like preservation of cells/microbiology and some small insects, if an intact cell is found, shouldn't we be able to PCR some of the endospore genetics for a clearer picture? What are your thoughts? Have you heard of this theory before?
@williamchamberlain2263
@williamchamberlain2263 3 жыл бұрын
The Devil's Tower thing is a conspiracy theory out of the Flat Earth community; I think it started with the video ‘No Forests on Flat Earth’ which someone decided to make as an argument for a world cover-up of ... something.

Does dendrochronology specifically have to do with the specific tree ring technique or can it encompass the study of dating trees as a whole? For example radiocarbon dating a tree, or dating a tree without cutting it down. Or hell, even studying about how trees age?
@Jordan-vr7ip
@Jordan-vr7ip 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it’s only tree rings. You don’t have to cut the tree down they small holes through them.
@carultch
@carultch 3 жыл бұрын
Do tropical trees also have ring patterns that enable you to count the rings for the age of the trees? Tropical trees don't go through winter/summer cycles the same way that temperate climate trees do, due to the season being a lot less extreme in a tropical location. Are the rings of tropical trees, just not as obvious? What if you grow a tropical tree species in a temperate environment, or vice versa? Would you get a different ring pattern than the same tree species in its native environment.
@viihuman4416
@viihuman4416 2 жыл бұрын
Hey carl, tree rings isn't a one time a year deal and shouldn't be the go to for age of any tree. everytime there's a dry spell it'll harden to preserve itself creating a ring. if there's no dry spell or infestation or other events that would harm the tree it won't get a ring.

Here's a stupid question: how did we figure out one ring represents exactly one year (= 365 days)?
@drmantistoboggan2870
@drmantistoboggan2870 3 жыл бұрын
I think its because the seasons make the rings darker and lighter alternatively so if there's a dark ring next to a light ring, its been through all 4 seasons which takes a year. Something like that anyway
@viihuman4416
@viihuman4416 2 жыл бұрын
Its not a stupid question, and it doesn't represent a year accurately. there assuming it has one ring a year because it went through a winter but winter alone isn't the only variable in the rings like the video stated afterwards it also shows events that transpired. Dating trees is erroneous and isn't considered credible. things that may make a tree ring besides winter maybe droughts or dry spells, possible bug infestations or fires etc.

everything mentioned is good and right except for time, tree rings don't represent time but events. it does't say "Oh its my birthday im gonna get a ring" When theres a dry spell it'll grow a ring when its winter it'll grow a ring when almost any event that distresses a tree occurs it'll harden to preserve itself and the water in a tree (thus creating a ring). There's a Plethora of Findings that find tree's can grow many rings a single year or none at all. its also the same for ice cores. its a bad science in general and only can validate its findings with other findings thats known to have happened and is recorded to have happened.
@ProfessorDaveExplains
@ProfessorDaveExplains 2 жыл бұрын
Of course it represents time. Each ring is a year. Years are a unit of time. I go over anomalies in this series as well. it is not "bad science". Scientists know what they're doing.
