This was one of the first videos I've watched from the Khan Academy. Now, 4 months and almost 1100 videos later, I came back to this. What the Khan Academy has done for me is amazing, the amount of things I've learned is more than my whole high school experience. Sal Khan is my biggest inspiration and his work is truly amazing. Thank you for teaching the world.

One thing I love about KZbin and Khan academy is that not only can I go back and learn what I missed instead of having have too look stupid asking questions to a teacher but, a teacher who actually takes the initiative and time to educate ppl, because I know I hated asking the teacher to go back because of missing some details, and struggling to go back school to learn whatever i left off at and not only just one subject but all subjects . I'm forever appreciative of this page!

Okay, I'm a little late to the reply party but here we go. I love Khan Academy. I love science (my majors were both mathematics and environmental science). And I love God. My dad's an architect and my mom's a nurse and they both drilled hard studying in all subjects and knowing biblical truths so I never had this "issue". One of my biggest pet peeves is this weird American belief that concepts of science and religion (specifically Christianity as we are in America) are enemies of each other. They're not. There is a reason a lot of early scientists were Christians including Darwin and to this day many current scientists such as Francis Collins (Former Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute and author of the book "The Language of God") are still Christian. There was never a conflict between the two, only conflicts between different groups' dogma (between both scientists and theologians alike using theories to shoot facts instead of facts to shoot theories). In fact, the bible is persistent with telling people to seek knowledge (ex. Proverbs 18:15, one of my favorites says, "An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge."). TL;DR Evolution does not conflict with God's existence. You can love both. Hardcore creationists and evolutionists twist facts to prove their points so please make sure you study hard in both your scientific and biblical research (historical documents backs up Jesus' existence) so you can know the truth for yourself and not base it off of the weird beliefs people spew from their mouths.

I am a Christian and I don't understand why everyone always gets so butthurt about evolution in regards to the bible. Just think of evolution as how God creates life.
@freethinkingatheist60129 жыл бұрын
zanocco641 Here's why. Some people take their religion very serious. Seriously enough to actually read their Holy Doctrine and believe it happened way their circular reasoning Book of proof said it happened, not by evolution and natural selection over billion of years. This Christian God you follow must be a new God all together. Evolution completely destroys the Adam & Eve creation myth/assertion, which destroys the absurd "original sin" concept, thereby destroying the illogical & shockingly absurd "need" for God to impregnate a woman with himself in human form, so he could sacrifice himself to himself to act as a loophole for rules that he created in the first place that he could not circumvent. Only cognitive dissonance, not reading the bible, and/or recreating a new individualistic & highly subjective version of Christianity in one's own mind (like most Christian's nowadays do anyway) could ever make these two contradictory premises of Christianity and Evolution at all compatible. Telling yourself that God used evolution is a presupposed conclusion, which is a logical fallacy, but you have no way of linking evolution to "God did it" outside of your mind, or even that it even points to the existence of a God, or is even possible. Evolution shows how life can evolve without requiring any intelligence. It's just beyond the understanding of most human minds to grasp as well as uncomfortable harsh reality that's not very comforting to their psyche, unfortunately, because most people, especially in American have not been taught how to think critically for themselves, or simply allow their emotional preconceived, usually indoctrinated convictions to overwhelm their logic & critical thinking ability. Most are just indoctrinated slaves of their own minds simply due tot their inherited culture where most have not or simply do not exercise their critical thinking skills in this area at least simply because so badly they want to believe, because they want to believe.
@antpaste9 жыл бұрын
FreeThinking Atheist the bible is filled with symbolism. Of course the Adam and Eve thing isnt accurate in any sense. All I care about in this world is just letting people do what they want to do unless they are threatening the lives of others because then said people need to be dealt with in some way. Arguments about religion are circular and only cause unnecessary conflict, Someone else can believe what they want, and if it differs from mine, So what? Believe what you want to believe is my point, and both theists and atheists just need to kinda stfu and quit complaining about others differing beliefs, at least on the internet on a fucking biology help video.

Another simple evolution example occurs on our hands. When people wash with antibacterial washes, it is estimated that the average time people take to wash their hands is under 1 minute. As there is a variation of bacterial strengths. One is selecting the strongest ones to replicate as is selecting against the weaker ones, by washing their hands in a limited time (this time being enough for the weaker ones to die but not strong enough for the strong ones) Great video !!

There is always variation in a population (meiosis) and the environment selects for traits. Macroevolution occurs over millions of years and microevolution occurs in a shorter time frame. An example of macroevolution is the extinction of dinosaurs. Through adaptive radiation, the once fragile mammals conquered the earth and the environment selected for successful traits in their biomes. An example of microevolution is pesticide resistance, since meiosis (in a rapidly changing organism) lead to the selection of pesticide resistance.
@Roleren11 жыл бұрын
I would say that until you understand biochemistry, you can not understand evolution in a deep sence. In biochemistry, there is no difference between micro and macro evolution, there is no design, there is no purpose. There is only colliding chemicals, following a few simple laws of physics. And the "Psudo random" product of that, is what evolution is all about.
@Roleren11 жыл бұрын
***** You then use the premise that evolution is a random prosess. I would look at it like this: Evolution only builds on what works, and then expands on that until something new and even more adaptive comes along. The probabilites you are describing are not independent, but every singel event that happens in the cell, is dependent of what happened before. Reducing the probabilities to a more humanly understood level. From probability mathematics, you have: p(A/A) = 1. (Probability of A occuring, given that A has occured) = 100% No matter how unlikely something is, even if A = 0,00000000000000000000001%. It will happen, given that A allready has happened. This is how evolution works too. My argument still stands, and you my friend don't know enough about evolution to claim things like that.
@falsesectslikeshiaarejudeo65436 жыл бұрын
thats the deception! taking proven micro evolution and use that as a false proof for exxagerated macro evolution. they are 2 different things, its interior design vs expansion. DNA also shows that its a language. macro evolution is a marxist science.
@falsesectslikeshiaarejudeo65436 жыл бұрын
+Hakon your "arguement" is baseless. colliding chemicals are hardly simple, but even natures of 2 are different as 1 needs mutations, most are cancerous. it doesn't change facts it speciation/macro, isn't a real seen science ever in multi cell organisms, but a guess work!

I'm coming late to the discussion, but the only thing I disagree with is the randomness of the process, is that all of it happens by chance. I'm not saying that organisms, much less monocellular organisms, choose to evolve. I'm saying that this isn't randomness and chance, this is Nature, thus natural selection, and Nature isn't governed by chance alone. There are a lot of mechanisms happening in Nature that humans still can't, and maybe will never, understand.

Evolution is a belief in the facts supporting the theory. All of science is a belief system since science is not absolute. We are not omniscient, and science is constantly changing as our knowledge base expands. The difference is that science is a systematic approach and study. It is false to say that science contradicts religion and vice versa. No evidence has been given to support either side as proving the other false. Evolution for example, is not the proof that God does not exist (in fact, it heavily suggests the concept of God as it points that species branched out from a single source). That said, relgion is beyond our current means of study. For this reason, science is agnostic. To be atheist means to not be scientific, but to be religious as you have the belief in the denial of religion, without any unbiased factual evidence.

Science and Christianity go hand in hand. (Science is just understanding God's work.) I don't follow the latter due to how I feel about it, but with all of the evidence behind it. Why follow something based on a feeling if it has no grounds on reality? That would just be living a lie because of the feeling it gives someone. I strive for truth. So many atheists bash Christians and are incredibly hateful and angry. That seriously isn't necessary. I could honestly make a whole speech on science proving Christianity, but it would literally take pages and pages to write and I'm really only on these videos to brush up on my biology (I'm a Biology, Chemistry, and math tutor at my college and am pursuing an MD career). Seeing some of these arrogant atheists is just too much, and sadly, they wouldn't even listen even if what I have to say is right. Does anyone recommend me to watch these videos ? I have sat for the MCAT before ( 4 years ago) after I graduated with a bachelor in biology. My score was unsatisfying, so I went on and did a degree in psychology. Currently finishing my masters in clinical psychology, yet the urge of getting into med school is back. Most of the things I studied years ago is vague, yet I want to learn it again and sit for the MCAT.

I always find it amusing that while (usually) every Average McDumbass is content to shrug accept (or rather ignore) developments in say, pure Chemistry or Physics and say "Well, I don't really know much about that", the moment their creation myths seem threatened they're suddenly fucking experts through sheer intuition, capable of shattering the core pillars of decades of Biology with unimpeachable rebuttals that only took them mere seconds to formulate.

evolution is a unseen marxist science as a whole based on deceit. micro evolution is generally accepted, but the macro evolution x-men fantasy of speciation which evolutionists put over a million generations to avoid the burden of proof isn't.

@77davidwebb evolution doesn't say that life came form the big bang, or even how it formed. it simply deals with how life changes over time, with extreme accuracy. and how would any holy book in the world have automatic authority?
@raymondstheawesome11 жыл бұрын
***** if you want to learn more about the big bang, then watch Lawrence Krauss: A Universe from Nothing. he explains why there is something rather than nothing and why nothing will give rise to something. Besides, earth biology only deals with life n earth, not big bang cosmology.

"Yet, you still can't find any evidence of a missing link" You're right, because there is no missing link. We have a pretty comprehensive fossil record showing progressive evolution from ape to man (and other species). It doesn't matter what religious retards believe, they have always been against genuine knowledge from the very start.
@falsesectslikeshiaarejudeo65436 жыл бұрын
fossils are commonly frauds & guess works with millions of years of gaps, its like the x-men art concpet except the real world marxist evolutionists spread it over millions of generations to hide from the burden of proof!
@dannypike31896 жыл бұрын
false sects like shia are judeo made No, fossils are the physical representation of the mutations, and we can actually see where the species split off into two, as well as we can observe the gradual development of characteristics we see today. However, it isn’t the only evidence, not even close. We also look at the DNA of two species. The ONLY known mechanism for sharing DNA is through reproduction. There’s no other way for two species to share DNA, than through reproduction, which we can observe. You may say that, “god made it that way,” of which of course you have absolutely no evidence, and rather are just implementing the god of the gaps fallacy, which is worse in this case, because there IS an actual known mechanism. We have also observed speciation, where one species diverges into a difference specie. Creationists like to use the word “kind,” and yet they cannot even define what a kind is. They also love to distinguish between micro and macro evolution, and try to make them seem like different mechanisms, which is funny, because they haven’t done a shred of research to have come to such a conclusion justifiably. They are the SAME mechanism, in that the mutations are different. The only difference between the two is self explanatory; it is the time scale that they take place under, macro being large, and micro being small. Clearly you listen to Kent Hovind or some other religious dolt who has no idea what they’re talking about. Kent Hovind bought his pHD from a unaccredited institution, and held off from revealing where he taught for as long as he could, because he never taught in a single public school, rather only in church schools that he usually founded himself. He is a convicted fraud who doesn’t have a shred of expertise. Do not argue against evolution until you have the knowledge to do so. Every religious person I have ever met has been utterly ignorant to science as a whole, because they are willfully ignorant, and are taught to not trust anything anyone says other than the church, because they will see the idiocy of it all otherwise.

@doncourtreporter9 жыл бұрын
Hannah Farley Girl: If you don't agree with evolution, then you're still in the wrong class in biology. Evolution is not a matter of "belief." There's more evidence for evolution than for gravity. You eat food that's been artificially selected, which we learned from "natural selection." Consider the fossil record. But while here, if you're a creationist, I invite you to take the Nobel Peace Prize today with your reproducible, demonstrable test results, which science is required to do. What's the hold-up? And science has wonderful predictive power because it works. Peace.
@hannahfarley31379 жыл бұрын
Just saying I would rather not take Biology. I hate that class. Science doesn't interest me all that much. But even though I do not enjoy it, I take the time to learn about evolution at times, it interests me to learn about what others believe to be true. I do want to point out that I don't hate anybody or dislike anybody for believing in evolution, it's just not something that I find to be true and I hope that one day, as a Christian, that others will find out the truth for themselves.
@doncourtreporter9 жыл бұрын
Hannah Farley It's very revealing that you think science is based on belief. Wrong. Science is only reproducible, demonstrable test results and it's always peer-reviewed. But have a nice trip. I don't hate anybody as well. That's a straw man argument. Test results, only. No belief involved. That's reserved for and required to be a religious person.

don leavell You say you don't find evolution to be true. That reveals that you are unaware of the tenets of evolution. It's a fact, dear. Sorry to be the one. But you guys can't prove any of your miracle claims and disregard that which can be proven. That's a state of mind devoid of critical thinking. You want it to be true. That's the fact you should realize. Peace.

I am a Christ follower, however, I love science. Does it really matter how God made the universe? He is the Great I Am, He can make the world any way He wants. If He wanted to make it through a Big Bang then He can by all means create it through a Big Bang. In short, who cares? End of discussion.

Jason Smith How did your god come to be? Why is he a he? What is the evidence of such creature? If one thinks that god always was, then why is it unthinkable that an endless number of universes goes in and out of existence all the time like subatomic particles does. Saying that god exists is not a conclusion, it's lazy, it's saying "we don't know therefore we will never know", people has said that about all sort of things and has over and over again been proven wrong as science proceeds. Why can't we just say the scientifically honest thing "I don't know yet, let's find out"

so let me try to understand what khan is saying here, this Speckled Moth did not change in any way whatsoever there were always dark Specked moths and light Speckled Moths, and one was hunted to near extinction due to changes in its environment, later the environment changed back and it favoured the other Moth. I see, so that this Moth started out as a Moth and stayed a Moth, and the bacteria he talks of well that changed from Bacteria to, well Bacteria. Can I say just as a dumb blonde this has nothing to do with macroevolution whatsoever? This is simply saying if men prefer blondes then they marry blondes, the children they produce will have higher possibility of having blonde children, the brunets never marry because no one wants them. The children will be bigger, smaller, smarter, thicker, but will always be what they are Homo sapiens. So there is no evidence here for macroevolution whatsoever is there, it’s just scientist telling us what we already know. Really I am a Christian and some of the comments on this thread are very offensive indeed, in fact just change the word Christian with black and many identify themselves as racists don’t they? now I don't mind a little name calling I have a few names of my own for my adversaries after all, but am I supposed to take those who pour scorn on me based on nothing more that if men prefer blondes or not, because that is what it comes down too. I can't believe people are so naïve not to check out the facts and other possibility’s before engaging in a religion, me I make no claims of openness or knowledge of science, if 100 scientist says something is fact and one doesn't I would be suspicious of the fact, I don't know any scientists who dispute gravity. The bible is right because God said so, I don't see this is any different than saying science is right about macro evolution because richard dawkins says so even if a thousand others agree with him, it only takes one or two to put into question his/their reasoning, Now don't get me wrong here, you can say you have "faith" in these men and that's fine by me, but don't claim to have a greater proof for what you claim because you are simply indicating to me that you think your religion is better than mine, and you only have insults and abuse to back up your claims and a good dose of faith too. Welcome to the world of faith and religion people.

Yeah... This was an INTRODUCTION to evolution. He was talking about natural selection in present time... You're right it didn't have anything to do with the evolving of a species... Because that wasn't the subject of the video. Evolution is a vast topic with an incredible amount of information and support. It took Darwin over 20 years to formulate his theory. I would encourage you to read his work, as well as a book called "Ever Since Darwin." Please don't formulate your opinion solely based on what you watched in a 17 minute video. That's just ignorant. I understand where you stand on being skeptical and not believing something without proof. But.... believing 100 scientists' viewpoint should be easier than believing in god the way a book written over 2000 years ago explains it. (not to mention the countless changes the bible has undertaken)

Noah Sawyer Hi Noah, _Yeah... This was an INTRODUCTION to evolution. He was talking about natural selection in present time... You're right it didn't have anything to do with the evolving of a species... Because that wasn't the subject of the video._ Oh I see, only I was told on another thread that there is no difference between macro evolution and micro evolution. Only it would be a little misleading to use the evidence of a moth changing colours, and building on this for a change in species. I would hope you agree with that. _"Evolution is a vast topic with an incredible amount of information and support."_ Micro evolution does yes, macro borrows from micro because it doesn’t have any evidence outside imagination and hope, I have a list of scientist on my profile page who dispute the science behind macroevolution, can you give me a list of scientists, who disagree on gravity? _"It took Darwin over 20 years to formulate his theory. I would encourage you to read his work, as well as a book called "Ever Since Darwin." Please don't formulate your opinion solely based on what you watched in a 17 minute video."_ No I have studied it at school my science teacher is unable to give any evidence, I challenge him on his assumption that macroevolution is a graphic based science, showing nothing more than an ape slowly raising in its walking position, I’m afraid unless that’s a 30 million year old polaroid then that only counts as imagination and not science. further a moth becoming a moth isn’t evidence of anything is it? No you have to explain the shear mathematical impossibility, just adding a longer time isn’t good science its just illusion. I’m afraid you have science real science working against you, and real scientist who are not so gullible as to be impressed by graphics, it gets worse for you, you now have scientist so desperate that they have to reinterpret nothing to mean a quantum vacuum, I mean how far will you go? maybe show me a moth that changes colour as evidence perhaps! _" I understand where you stand on being skeptical and not believing something without proof. But.... believing 100 scientists' viewpoint should be easier than believing in god the way a book written over 2000 years ago explains it. (not to mention the countless changes the bible has undertaken)"_ Why have you brought God into this? Why have you mentioned the bible? Why do you try to justify macroevolution by trying to disprove some religion? Why not justify macroevolution on its facts? The simple truth is, it’s a tool that you use to disprove a religion, that is not only sad but it’s not the purpose of science. I think you have lost all credibility I’m afraid. 1. You have used an old book to justify your argument (Darwins) then condemned another old book because it didn’t suit your purposes. 2. You give credit to 20 years work and reject a 2000 years’ work, because it didn’t suit your purpose. 3. You tried to justify a fact in one field by disproving something in an unrelated field; I would have to ask why you would need to do this if you have a mountain of evidence to support your case. 4. you mention a god but do not give him his deity, you create him as a straw man solely to further you argument which as I have already said has nothing to do with God, but if it does then you have to give the correct status to that deity. 5. You need to give the evidence for the countless changes in the bible? Moreover, how this proves macro evolution. I will await episode two of this video to see where it is going, I hope we don’t see any more of the moth, as I could have given a much better example of microevolution from a 2000 year old book called the bible. sarah.

***** Hello Dan, Yes I completely agree, natural selection is that process exactly. if you feel you have been worshiping an abstract entity then you have! I doubt you worshiped, do you mean you went to church perhaps? Worship is a personal thing isn't it? if you and I attended my church and we sang a hymn, then I would be worshiping and you would be singing, I think you mean this perhaps. I don't know what you mean by it works? it doesn't work for me? I mean what do you expect it to do? I just live by the bible you live by whatever, so what, we both are living. When it rains the rain falls on me and you! I will die so will you; I may have a miserable life and you a good life. When I die I will go where I want to go, so will you. I was chosen by god for no reason whatsoever, so was your family, it sounds to me you wasn't, I am not one jot better than you, but I was chosen because it pleased god to do so, it pleased him not to choose you, I can no more become a non-believer than you could become a believer, it gets more bizarre, I have no more evidence than you do for my belief than you do for your disbelief! Odd isn't it, you would possibly have a brother who believes, yet you were brought up together. I was in church one week and I met this broken lady, it made me cry what she told me, she lost her only child, and was unable to have more, and she told me this is why she had so much faith, my auntie, doesn't believe because she lost her husband in a car accident, when I read the bible love jumps off every page, when you read it . . . . well you tell me lol. I like you, honest, direct, and respectful. Nice to meet you dan. Sarah

Evolution is change over time through natural selection. Nature naturally selects organisms to be what they are based on their genes. There are three types of selections. Directional section where nature selects either one extreme of trait to the organism or the other extreme. Stabilization selection is where nature stabilizes one trait of an organism and disruptive selection where nature select two extremes of trait.

You're right - prior to the industrial revolution, the black moths were in much shorter supply. The black moths survived, but the whiter moths survived in greater numbers. After the trees got darker (not only from soot, but because the chemicals in the air killed light colored lichens), the black moths had a much easier time of surviving and became more plentiful, while the lighter ones faded away.
