Personally, it seems that open guard can in some situations be more advantageous to be in than closed guard in Mma given enough space and the opponent isn't working a guard pass, gives you a chance to stand up, especially when against a wall and also eat less punches. This differs from sport Bjj where the closed guard tends to give you more attacking options than the open guard which appears more neutral, qualitatively. In both, the closed guard probably still remains the go-to option for your final line of defense.

Hey Coach Patrick! Well done on introducing the basic grappling positions and the progression from best to worst pin scenarios and hierarchy. In the recap you mentioned that defending the full mount and back control are equally bad positions. In the context of MMA and where ground and pound is concerned, i feel like attacking from top mount is superior to attacking the back because you have stronger striking options (addition of gravity + elbow strikes) and i even see fighters turn and give up the back from bottom mount to avoid the strikes and the submissions they open in that pin. My question to you is, what is your personal opinion on which of the two is superior as far as MMA is concerned? Thanks, M Zee

Great question, M, thanks. The answer depends a lot on the practitioner, the opponent, and the context, but my genreal preference in an MMA context is to stay on top and take whatever is avaialble. So from the mount, if they expose the back, you take it, and if they escape, you gladly "float" back to mount and stay on the offensive with strikes and sub attempts. Note that when you lock up a solid body triangle from the back, you can also deliver powerful strikes. In a grappling-only context, I think it would be worthwhile to work a bit harder to expose the back from the mount, and keep it once you're there, even if it means rolling "under" your opponent or training partner; the same wouldn't be as true in an MMA context. Hope this helps! - Patrick

When strikes are involved, you'd most likely rather be on top, but without strikes one can argue guard position is neutral. In fact that's how it's scored in BJJ tournaments. This video kzbin.info/www/bejne/paXWnIWVhM-oeLc (starting 4:30) does a good job explaining that in close guard your opponent's upper body is above yours but your legs are above their's. Who's really 'on top' then?
@EffectiveMartialArts4 жыл бұрын
The top fighter is on top in closed guard. Simply because a significant part of their body occupies the uppermost space. But a strong argument could be made for the guard player being on top when we enter positions like rubber guard, clamp guard, or a pre-triangle... in those cases, the legs are actually on top of the upper body of the opponent, thus occuppying the highest position of any body part involved. That is, until the other practitioner stands, in which case the hips regain highest position. So a good definition of bottom position could be having one’s hips and/or back on the ground. But then again, that doesn’t include turtle... In any case, that goes way beyond the scope of this video, was trying to keep it simple for beginners. Will explore the variations of the guard in more details in the future. By the way, I’m a big fan of John Danaher, he’s truly one of the greatest minds in modern martial arts. His “Enter the System” series revolutionized my game. Thanks for the comment, Sacha! 🙏 - Patrick

Please make a video on pain tolerance because it is important for winning martial arts pain tolerance should be high as I am worried about how I can practice martial art when my hands or leg is paining - proud to be Indian

Thanks for the suggestion, pankaj. I would suggest that pain tolerance is developped mainly through various sorts of fitness training, but also bone conditioning to reduce sensitivity. Will address these topics in the future. Thanks for the comment! - Patrick
