This explains why even after 37 years of speaking, reading, and writing Greek, I still have trouble keeping up with native speakers!
@TMPOUZI4 жыл бұрын
also this explains why Erasmian pronunciation was invented so that English and German speakers can follow koine Greek in New Testament studies and not sound unintentionally constipated. They made constipation official!

Aren't there 7 vowel sounds? I hear ε and ο pronunced either close or open... For example, in the word όμορφος the first o sounds open while the last one close. Aren't these two different sounds?

Actually greek doesn't have a pronunciation. As a greek myself I can tell you that english speakers don't shout the letters like us. Greeks don't just pronounce the letters softly but emphasise all of them. That's why my language is considered shouty. Due to the lack of pronunciation I can imitate desently lots of pronunciations like the english, french, spanish or japanese one wothout even knowing those languages much. Though actually my trick in learning the pronunciation is to listen to the native speakers. The easiest way to do so is to watch cartoons dubbed in the language you want, because it's a lot easier to keep up and the vocabulary used is mostly normal. Greetings from Greece!

There`s not a single consonant sound in Greek that there isn`t in English. You use all the sounds that exist in Greek language but the letters that represent them change. The letters "γγ" in "signomi" example, have the same sound the letter "y" has in the English word "yes" or "yawn".
@lultrollgott7214 жыл бұрын
Kinda wrong "yes" would have the ιές this ιε rather than γγ and yawn like ιόυν
@TMPOUZI4 жыл бұрын
No the γγ letters in signomi doesn't sound like y of yes. That would (sort of) be the sound if the letter γ was followed by an i sound like in the word φαγητο (fayeeto - food). Yet still an English speaker would pronounce it with an accent (with a more silent y pulling his/her mouth more to both sides and back, like when we have a soft faked smile). So gh of sig(h)nomi is placed at the back at the tongue. The best description would be like a very soft and more earthy (Elvish) g sound

The g in gamma is a new sound for English speakers. I luckily know Spanish and the transition from g to gamma was easy. If you know Spanish, then gamma sounds like the second g in the Spanish word “gigante”.

There is no double " γ " in the word " συγνώμη " nowadays. Words " συγγνώμη " or even " συγκνώμη " are obsolete for too many decades now.

@Эрл_Грей2 жыл бұрын
" συγγνώμη " does not exist. It is " συγνώμη ". This is dead wrong. Also, " ου " is not a letter nor a vowel, it is a ligature.
