It is interesting to note that despite the obvious agedness of this production, the presentation stands the test of time. The organization president is clear and easily understood.

Man...I can't even begin to think how awesome it must have been to live in a time when you could invent a flying machine without some government agency rolling in like a SWAT team to shut you down.

IIDASHII I was born in 1957 ! When I was 7 yrs young. I built my first airplane. (It Flew ) My dad came home from work and took one look at the plane and told me to trash it, said he did not have the money for Dr's. Personally I feel the key word is patience, no barn storming take-offs. "Easy does it" makes everything last longer, you, me, the machinery...

Victor Chmura home built aircraft and kit planes are still legal to build and fly. You design it you build it. Call for a DAR inspection your done must maintain a build log as well as pictures and a video or two might help.[you must prove you built it. Then you get to test fly it in a designated area for 40 hours I believe then with the right avionics you can fly it anywhere. As well as take passengers. There are also kit planes you can purchase and build.

Well done, Dan! That was highly informative and entertaining. I grew up about 2 miles from Ken Brock Manufacturing in Garden Grove California. My dad and I used to peer into Ken's shop window on the weekends and fantasize about owning one of his beautiful machines. I intend to make that a reality in the near future. Your video was inspiring. Thanks again!

You can see that the overall mass of the gyro must is suspended and balanced from the rotor mast. In the classic pull design the gyro needed a longer tail to balance the large motor mass and supporting structure placed relatively far from the mast. Also a push design frees the front and gives you increased visibility on approach and touch down.

Nothing in the history about Ken Wallis and "Little Nellie"? It was for me the introduction to the incredible machine that was the autogyro, and I suspect for many others. I learned about Benson long after I knew about the principles of autogyro flight.

There's a fundamental difference here: original inventors are generally geniuses, while kit builders are not.

'...no motorized vehicle is safe. The gyrocopter is no different.' *wow, that is essential to understanding why so many accidents happen, which are fatal.* They are inherently unsafe... *we can limit this danger by training, learning, and respecting the danger no matter how long we've been doing it.*

@@garypulliam3740 that's a great sense of humor, brother. *i suppose when venturing into the world, it's always essential to take 2 things: your conscience, and some common sense.* I'd say perhaps you forgot about the latter this day. Well, as long as no one got hurt, we're good! Have a great day brother. ☀️😎☀️🇺🇸 [Idk if the mice in your area think that car of yours is safe? But, i think everyone will be fine. ] 😉😉😂

@ekul011 You do not need a pilots license for a gyrocopter as long as it is under 250 lbs, goes slower than 65 MPH, and holds less than 5 gallons of fuel.

So crazy that this even works, seems almost like perpetual motion. Are the blades transferable from helicopters or is there a slight tweak that makes them spin more easily?

He mentions in the video that the prop is in the back partially to wash the rudder. Very important at low speed. Even in a Cessna 152 flying at 45 knots (just about stalled) the controls are a lot less effective, so imagine an autogyro flying at 5 knots. You'd get no reaction at all!

Better to say British rather than English. (unless you strictly mean the English bit of the UK) . As you were talking about the military I don't think it was the English army that just won the war - despite what John Lennon sang.

Awesome job with the video. Probably the most informative out of thousands. Do you have a website or contact that I can bounce some questions off you? Doing a P40 replica for a movie. Just wanted to run some gyro questions by you and see about the kits you discussed. Feel I could build 100% except the rotors.

I want to see a landing with very little or no role. Who is heavy hot and humid I had a passenger in my RAF also loaded to the gills with spear fuel full Fuel and camping gear on the passenger side my door was off. At 36 ft to climb over a small mountain with a cell tower at the top I had an engine failure. I was flying over unknown territory not familiar with the landscape at all looking for a place to put it down. I saw a leak off in the distance but I know I did not have enough altitude to make it that far. When are you finally descended to 2000 feet my passenger said this is a real engine failure isn't it? Yes I replied. At the last minute at a thousand feet I spotted a very small field 150 ft by perhaps 100 ft. I did a 180 degree turn losing altitude I set up for a Final Approach. I could hear my instructor in my headphones you really wasn't there but he was saying you better hurry up or you won't make it hurry up. At this point I was set up a final probably only 300 feet AGL. My passenger said do you see those wires yes I replied. Do you see that big tree again I said yes. This is a unmowed but Short Grass spot on the ground and that was a beautiful emergency landing with no damage to persons or property and I don't think I rolled 5 feet. A Precision emergency landing. The ship in the picture is the first gyro I built mostly from scrap I found.

hey, does anyone make a half breed? you know a helicopter that you can disengange the rotor in flight and just use a horizontal engin to keep blades turning

Nine year old answer --- not as far as I know, but.....Many do have very impressive jump capabilities for zero runway takeoffs. There are a few companies experimenting with gyros that have small wings that can create lift at high speeds. This enables the pilot to then change the the pitch of the rotor to such a degree that it no longer provides lift and as a result has much lower drag (+/- 100 rpm). The gyro then functions like a pusher airplane for faster, more economical flights than with rotors alone. Jump capabilities + wings = win!

How do you get jump capability in an autogyro?
@qumefox
@qumefox 8 жыл бұрын
+CHOPPERGIRL AIRWAR To do it the gyro has to have a variable pitch rotor head pretty much identical to what you'd find on a helicopter, as well as a prerotator. Flatten blade pitch then overspeed the rotors with the prerotator, then add blade pitch back and up you go, just like a helicopter.. at least for a few feet. They aren't very common in homebuilt or kit circles though due to the amount of complexity and cost the variable pitch rotor head adds.
