In 2011 the video "Top Gear for Gyroplanes" was released, it shows just how much fun you can have in a Gyroplane, and how safe they are to fly.
In "Top Gear for Gyros 2 - Gyroplanes Explained", Phil Harwood substantiates many of the claims made in the original video and explains, in a simple and entertaining style, the basics of why a Gyroplane is inherently stable, doesn't really feel turbulence, and how they can fly even though the rotor is not powered by the engine.
It's fun, it's informative, it answers many of the questions that people have about Gyroplanes.

He didn't explain much of anything here. Everything was dumbed down to the point of nonsense and waved away with a "you don't have to think about how it works". Thanks, but I came to this video to learn how it works, and this really unfunny guy didn't help me at all.

The idea of the "personal aircraft" was ogled since the 1930s, yet nothing practical has ever manifested. Every ultralight, every gyrocopter, every real helicopter or plane needs training to operate, regular maintenance and comes with running costs...often more than the average Joe is willing to invest, time/money-wise.

Thank you Phil, for the entertaining and informative lessons of gyro flight! As many of the vids I've seen on this wonderful form of flight have increased the interest, and taught me a thing or two about it, yours had me smiling, give a chuckle or two and most of all, got my heart racing and increased my yearning for such an exhilarating form of flight. Thank you so much for posting these videos. It really helps promote and educate the people about the joys of the safest form of flight. The advancement sure has progressed over the ages. From the original Benson back in the mid '60's to today, especially the last 8-10 years, technology has greatly increased the look and excitement of such a simple design of flight. Why it took so long for the mass's interest in it, I may never understand. But regardless, I am thankful for the progress

Most of them are using a bushing over the bolt that is lubricated so the bushing and bolt would have to fail. Additionally the bolt is in shear in two locations like a hitch pin in a receiver.

The laws of aerodynamics? No. Much simpler than that. If an aerofoil deflects air downwards it gives lift if it deflects it backwards it gives rotation. Angle of deflection depends on angle of attack which decrease moving outward on a rotating blade as the airspeed increases. Apart from the gobbledegook the rest was brilliant as ever. Thank you.

Short take off and landing roll distances, stability, compact size... sounds so nice :D Really want to try this! Only there’s no gyro in my club :( The only occasion that I think I’d prefer in a plane is a bird strike to the blade, you don’t want to lose that blade and a plane with a hole in the wing still flies. I wonder what is the strength of the blade material, they look like graphite or fiberglass but I’m sure that the centrifugal force rigidifies them?

What then does it take to get a licence, I know some that have not got solo until around 70 hours ,licence around 85 up to 100 hours, why is this so? if the hours are around 45 hours, on the course . plus if fixed wing Less hours ,Yet some still do not get to solo until around 70 hours. Please explain ?

I think this video has some very positive technical aspects to contribute, that said it is very badly let down by utterly stupid unnecessary loud music and equally distracting unnecessary video effects. I could add that perhaps a pressure distribution diagram of an airfoil might have helped assist the viewer envisage why an airfoil would proceed forward to hold the rotor in autorotation.

learning on the gyro ,after 31 hours, and 1 and a half years, I feel like giving up. I have been fortunately to be in a position to fly as much as possible, yet my Instructor says ,it will be too much . o.k so if I find that, I can slow up. I am frustrated that there is no light at the end of the tunnel. On fixed wing I felt I was continually moving on. I appreciate its a different machine, and I am doing well .So any reasons ? why I cannot keep moving instead of I hour up and sit around for 3 hrs? At least with fixed wing it was ! hour up and chat about the flight on the ground ,and one understood more. Any Advice please? Wish you were my Instructor.

How do the blades start spinning up to speed like the cavalon does before the craft is in forward motion if the rotor doesn't receive power?
@RoadRunnerLaser
@RoadRunnerLaser 5 жыл бұрын
Because modern autogyros actually DO have powered rotors. Just prior to the take-off roll, the "pre-rotation" button is pressed which uses engine power to spin up the rotors. Once the rotors are spun up, the pre-rotation is disengaged and the take-off roll can begin. From this point on, the rotors are not powered but autorotating. As airspeed increases, there should be an increase in rotor-speed and subsequently, lift. Pre-rotation shortens the take-off roll considerably.

Are they gyrocopters or gyroplanes?
@scottdenard7554
@scottdenard7554 5 жыл бұрын
Ok Dr. Phill I have a somewhat strange question I think you might know the answer to. I am a heavy man (OK FAT) and if a gyro in in experimental class maximum weight of 1320 lbs and has a useful load of 600 lbs and is tandem. In order to fly it I am assuming the CG for the gyro with me as a pilot and a copilot with full fuel would be forward of cg limitations. So here is the question if it is forward can one not have a curved longer mast to move the mast forward and upward to keep rotor in the same alignment as the original mast giving the prop proper clearance therefore moving the fulcrum point forward to a new cg? I understand of course you would have to adjust the line of thrust appropriately.

So gratifying to see Cierva's dream come true at last. He knew what was needed,but at the time technology,and public indifference,and possibly hostility,just made precision control unattainable. Well, no one else bothered to reply. I just happened across this channel. KZbin metrics, go figure! Anyway I am an A&P mechanic and have done extensive research on gyros as I hope to have one some day. To answer your question; Gyros are the not the most efficient flying machines by a fair margin A Calidus with the prop pitched for max cruise gets somewhere around 5-6 gph at 85 kts. This is what was reported by "Light Sport & Ultralight Flier". Fuel efficiency ranks pretty low when most consider a gyro. It's the FUN factor that's important. If you want efficient cross country, that would be fixed wing hands down.
