I am a college student in southern California and would like to tell you how much I appreciate your help. I probably have the worst calculus teacher in America and without your help would know nothing pertaining to calculus. It means so much to find a teacher that genuinely cares about students comprehending the information. I have literally watched every single video you have uploaded for calculus through implicit differentiation and you are my calculus teacher. Thanks so so much and keep at it!

WOOOHOO I understand this! You and PatrickJMT both have explained the concept of Implicit Differentiation quite thoroughly and, quite honestly, straight to the point! 1) Take derivative like always 2) If there's a 'y' or any other variable, tack on a dy/dx or y' to the function/equation. 3) Solve for dy/dx or y' Done.

THANK YOU for that very kind comment! Maybe someday the world will realize that teachers are the ones responsible for teaching the future of this world. If teachers were considered as valuable as actors and athletes, there might be more passionate and enthusiastic teachers pursuing the profession. Most teachers are not in it for the money, they teach because they just love to teach...and I DO LOVE to teach!!! So be sure to take the time to thank your other teachers for loving what they do:)

So whenever you have a coefficient in front of a trig sign when doing implicit differentiation, you don't have to do the product rule/ worry about the number at all?

wait, I think you messed up on the second example. The first part had both the product and chain rule but you only used the chain rule for sin part of the first bit. The original chunk of 3*sin(2x) would have to be (0)(sin(2x)) + (3)(cos(2x)*(2)) or am I just overthinking it ? Thanks :)

Hi prof, Your videos have helped a lot, and maybe I've missed a few videos on this since I usually refer to KZbin whenever I need an in-depth explanation on certain concepts. I understand the part where you have to insert y prime to any y that you're taking the derivative of; however, what I don't quite get intuitively is ... well ... how come? What I currently know about dy/dx is that it represents a very infinitely small changes of y in relative to the changes of x, but if there's a different concept that I need to grasp in order to understand why we're taking the chain rule of y in the equation please let me know! Thank you!
