This is absolutely superb. I've spent a ton of money on education and this has never been so well explained to me as this

It's one thing to understand substitutions, it's another to memorize all the inversion voicings and creatively apply a workable chord, sequence of chords, or arpeggiation of chords in the moment while utilizing proper voice-leading. Another level up, there's all the color note options and all of their associated voicings to consider. Further still is the knowledge of the sizable palette of scales, modes, sequences and riffs that can be played over all of those chords. All of the above not only has to be memorized visually and in muscle memory in all 12 keys, but ear-trained to near instant recognition as well 🙄 (and I haven't even mentioned all the standards you're expected to memorize). You have to really love jazz to want to put in the amount of practice necessary to master it, it's much harder than being a competent rock player, which comes more intuitively (and at least in the past, had a better chance of making you some money and getting you laid). Personally, I have always been too lazy to commit to learning jazz thoroughly, as it is I haven't even taken enough time to master rock.

That made me realise that Arpeggios aren't 'Broken Chords' like people say but are Pre-Cursors of chords built at the scale level.Which is a positive message.Marvellous teaching. Thanks to you both.

This is brilliant!! Every musician should study theory: all melody, harmony, and rhythm. Also, it's very important that every musician have a background on piano, no matter if you're a singer, or play ANY instrument!!

Great lesson from Dani, trying jazz guitar and good to get different perspectives. Enjoyed all of Sunday School series Andy, hope you can continue at some point - guess it's a lot of hard work for you.

Thanks to Mr. Rabin for his great contribution here. This series has almost gotten me to dig out my old Yamaha acoustic, restring it, and start growing painful callouses on my fingertips again. Maybe in 2025...

Very informative video, thanks. The ending reminds me of my 8 am lectures in histology when the prof would turn out the lights and show slide after slide of normal and abnormal cells from different tissues. I got a C in that class. I could not stay awake.

Fantastic. A lightbulb just went on with the grouping of the diatonic chords into the four categories.

Oh man, I love this! Andy, I love all your videos, and having Dani on for this primer on jazz harmony was bloody perfect! Dani is a monster guitarist, but he's also a brilliant educator, not to mention funny as all fuck. Cheers!

Even before I get to the meat of this video, a couple of minutes of thought, and I now know why I play Am, Dm, G7, Cmaj7. That's a good start. Plenty for me to work with now I've watched it all, and I may have to come back to it. Thanks.

In the Americas Jazz and Brasilien Music play around with European Harmony in a Way that they kept Chromatic Tonal Music at the Vanguard. Modern European Composers have abandoned Chromatic Tonal Music long ago. Not that there are no European Composers that try to go back to Pre-Modern Times but they do not seem to Connect with People like Jazz and Brasilien Music.

@@AndyEdwardsDrummer Hi Andy no I am not related to Trevor Rabin, although I know a lot about him as he was in a South African band called Rabbit, before joining Yes. Many thanks Andy for the entertaining content you provide on music. As a music teacher here in South Africa, I find it very informative and valuable, especially your views on where music is going in the future.

Not sure who is singing it, but it's a cover of 'Don't Explain' by Billie Holliday.

She definitely isn't your typical KZbin guitarist playing metal but Allan Holdsworth tunes and Mike Stern tunes with her own improvations. She definitely doesn't get the credit she deserves.
