Can Photolab 7 be used/invoked within Photoshop on a layer pretty much like the NIk plugins or not?

I’ll have to check that. Good question.

Since I'm considering getting the software, I'd really like to know before downloading and installing the trial version,... perhaps only to uninstall it the day after.

So the short answer is “No”. You can’t have a PhotoLab layer. Having said that, consider the workflow. PhotoLab is a RAW processor, in the same way as Adobe Camera RAW. I know that you can add layers from ACR, but the usual workflow is basic processing in one of Lightroom, ACR or PhotoLab, then move on to Photoshop for layer based processing as needed. The direction of travel for all these tools is going to make that distinction ever more evident, we have this year seen Adobe implement mask based processing into Lightroom that is wholly separate from Photoshop. Similarly, the AI enhancements Photoshop are unlikely to apppear in Lightroom. From the DxO perspective, I can see more value in adding blending and stitching so that panoramas and HDR can be done in one tool, than in enabling individual correction layers in Photoshop. That just my opinion though. It might be worth joining the DxO forums if you want to dig deeper? Hope this is helpful.
