With this video, we inaugurate a new list on my channel dedicated to bringing closer and disseminating the specific works of Ortega y Gasset, starting with his first book, "Meditations on Don Quixote". This book is especially important in Ortega's production, and I will dedicate two videos to its introductory analysis.
"Meditations on Don Quixote" was published by Ortega y Gasset in 1914 when he was 30 years old. It is here that he introduces his famous apothegm "I am myself and my circumstance." Ortega defines philosophy as "the general science of love", since the task it proposes consists of connecting particular things and facts in order to give them a meaning, a sense, and that connective task is that of love. In the opposite direction, breaking up, separating, becoming disinterested in the meaning of things, hatred acts. And precisely Ortega highlights that “the intimate home of the Spanish people has long been taken over by hatred,” which affects our ability to understand and also leads to a collapse of values. We infer that Hispanic Americans, with whom we share a cultural background, are also affected by this same vice. We are being unsuited for reflection and concept, in short, for philosophy, which, according to Ortega, is the discipline that tries to make us ascend from immediate impressions to deeper realities that reveal their meaning to us through reflection.
