@Nick Ovesen Hi Nick, I'm not a native but have been learning for a few years. My advice is - keep practising, keep it fun, don't be afraid to make mistakes and focus on being understood, not being perfect. Don't let the alphabet hold you back from learning more either - I personally found that learning some phrases and vocabulary was more helpful to teach me letters and pronunciation than trying to memorise the alphabet over and over. Also - I can really recommend the Language Transfer course on youtube as a good introduction :) hope that helps a little, and good luck!

I love Greece and often go there on vacation, and I always try to learn some useful phrases in the language of the country I'm travelling to. It's nice to see how the face of the native person lights up because you took the time to learn some basic words or sentences. I think it also shows respect in a way. Anyway, I should actually be studying right now....

Thank you for this video. I have Greek Cypriot family. My mum is half Greek Cypriot and my grandmother is Greek Cypriot, as is her side of the family. I don't know much of the language, but have been trying to learn for years. I only know a couple of words and phrases. This was a very educational video! :) I noticed Greek Cypriot has some slight differences to traditional Greek, like some pronunciations are different and there are some differences in spelling, so it can be confusing. For now, I'm focusing on just Greek. lol

I am a native Greek. I recently came to Cyprus and learned a lot of the differences, the correct way of writing is the same and Cypriots are not encouraged to write like they speak as much. The good thing is they can understand mainland Greek perfectly and can even speak in almost perfect mainland accent. although I sometimes can't understand them when they speak with their native accent. If you got any questions please feel free to ask.

Typical garbage trying to dunk on Americans. Literally every language has their own way of pronouncing Greek deities. I'm American. I speak Greek. However, I pronounce the names the way they are pronounced in English when speaking English because I'm not a smug asshole.

@@Sybaris_Rex I'm guessing German and Dutch isn't true to the original pronunciation. I would think romance languages would be more in-line with the Greek pronunciation.

I was already familiar with most of the Greek alphabet because I come from a STEM background. Therefore, memorizing which letters have which sounds wasn't really much of a problem for me. The only ones that took a bit of training were the letter that looks like an "n" is pronounced like a Spanish/Italian "i." Secondly, the letter "v" is pronounced like an "n." Those two letters occur very frequently in Greek. There were a couple other Greek letters I was less familiar with which don't appear very frequently. Namely, chi is pronounced like an "h" and eta is pronounced like a "z." I don't think it's necessary for a beginner to make a distinction between the "ts" and "tz" sounds, even though most books do. The "ts" is particularly common in Italian. The most notable example being pizza.

I have an ancestor who lived in the Colony of Virginia in the late 1600's and his name was "Elias Elexander Garganus" (he signed it "Elias Elex'r Garganus"). I know that there is a region in Italy called Garganus, but some say the family is Greek. Can someone tell me if "Elexander" is a Greek pronunciation for "Alexander" or if that is a common spelling there?

It depends on your purpose of learning Greek. If it's to use during travel to Greece or read modern literature, then you should use the modern version. If you plan to read old literature, then ancient Greek is for you.

@@HollywoodF1 That just means a Polish person should make two or three spreadsheets from a couple Greek phrasebooks consisting of words which contain the letter theta. Doesn't take very long. As an English and Spanish speaker, I applied this same approach to "gli" construction in Italian. I even made videos with this type of drill. A list of ~20 words, only takes about a minute to read. That is, first the foreign word is read, then the native synonym(s) are read.
