If you want to see actual play of solo rpgs, I highly, highly, recommend the channel Me, Myself, and Die. He makes fantastic, high quality videos of his solo games and watching his videos was instrumental in me being able to wrap my head around how to play solo RPGs. He's used many of the things mentioned in this video (Five Parsecs from home, Ironsworn, Mythic GM emulator)

I think my original post got deleted after I added some KZbin links, so I am trying again. Two recommendations for solo GMs I have are How to Host a Dungeon (by Tony Dowler) and Delve (by Blackwell Games), two solo games involving dungeon creation. Also for a quick solo game, Dungeon Hero (by Lone Spelunker), which is pocket sized adventures.

Every time I see a major KZbinr cover solo RPG, my heart warms and it's a bonus that it's a Pathfinder channel as well! I am currently playing Pf2e solo using a variety of solo engines and tools. For the oracle, I use MUNE for its simplicity over Mythic (which I used originally), GMA (Gamemaster's Apprentice) deck and at times the Solo Adventurer's Toolbox both versions. PS: I was one of the playtesters for the second Solo Adventurer's Toolbox book and while yes it is designed for 5e, there are still some useful resources for non-5e games.
@HowItsPlayed
@HowItsPlayed 11 ай бұрын
I feel like I'm missing something obvious... but what is "MUNE"?
@fitzgeraldlimisella4393
@fitzgeraldlimisella4393 9 ай бұрын
@@HowItsPlayedhm I can't believe I missed this reply. MUNE is a free GM Emulator much like Mythic. It stands for Madey Upy Namey Emulator (I know...). The idea is instead of rolling on a d100 table like Mythic, you just need a D6 as the oracle. The possible answers are "No, and...", "No", "No, but..." and the Yes counterparts. In terms of likelihood, you simply roll 2D6 and take the higher (if likely) or lower (if unlikely) number, similar to 5e's Advantage and Disadvantage system.

Captain’s Log plays very well, has helpful tables to establish missions and streamlined mechanics to get you right into the actions. The only quibble I have (if you can call it that) is that the rules are the most seamless when playing the captain. I mean, it’s in the title, after all. Still, I just had to go and try a chief engineer. It does work, but you may have to massage some results if you are as much of a contrarian as I am. That said, it’s highly recommended. Oh, and the “edition” refers only to the cover art. Any “edition” works for all eras of play. FYI.

My Gorn crashed on the planet with the Ambassador both injured and just fought a massive creature. Barely won. It will be up on my channel when finished and the write up will be on Continuing Missions. Living the system.

Great timing on the video, I find people are more and more interested in these sorts of games. I personally have found the 5 FROM style of solo RPG to be my favourite. I enjoy the minis and terrain (no grids) and I thoroughly enjoy the added RPG elements these games add during the campaign steps. In that genre, I would add: Lasting Tales Elder Scrolls Call to Arms (especially with the Chapter 1 Campaign book)

PF2e D20 vs. DC with DC adjustments +/-10/5/2 is essentially the same thing as Mythics decision d100 matrix modified by chaos once you work thru the math, then you can just use their roll tables for ideas with PF2e itself as the decision mechanic and ask the 'GM' D20 your yes/no questions and vary the DC with both chaos and likelyhood. strong yes/no is just meets DC+/-10, and nats (doubles) are triggers like nat1/20. Divide the d100 decision matrix by 5 to make it a D20 and it becomes easy to see this!

A brand new option that is just now delivering to backers is 2D6 Dungeon. It is really, really good. There is a plan for a second Kickstarter later this year. I have the books and and also the cards coming. The creator, Toby Lancaster, has a lot of videos on his channel including quite a few playthroughs. You build the dungeons as you go along by rolling, you guessed it, 2d6. The world really fleshes itself out and gives you lots of options. I would highly suggest checking it out. Thanks for this video! I'm going to look into the Lone Wolf books. The D100 Dungeon materials have been on my radar for a while. I was not, however, aware of the extra materials you can get for it. After I've had some time with 2D6 Dungeon when it arrives, I might consider looking a bit deeper into to the D100 system.

I understand the appeal for solo play, especially for people without groups to play with or social skills to interact with other people well. But they take out the most engaging and enjoyable part of RPGs for me. It's the group think, characters engaging with other charactersm NPCs and the environment, making character decisions about morality and what and who to be involved with, etc. You don't get that with solo play or are dependent on random roll tables to simulate it. It's almost completely problem/puzzle solving, quest chasing and the like, which doesn't appeal to me. Maybe I'm wrong but that's been my experience.

Just wanted to say that I loved the lone wolf books when I was a kid in the 80s, and have revisited them several times through the years. There was also a graystar the wizard series by the same people, and even at one point they created something called the magnamund companion, which was a more classical rpg book so you could play the lone wolf theme in a more classic multi person ttrpg setting. There was also a pretty good android app for the books that did all the recordkeeping as well at one point.

Great video! Thanks for making it :) I'm a solo RPG-er working my way up from one page systems to Ironsworn. Five Parasecs has drawn my eye for a while - do you know if it is also available specifically on virtual tabletop? Or could you play it miniature-free? I've never used vitual tabletop before but it seems like a great resource for solo RPG-ers from what you've said here.
@HowItsPlayed
@HowItsPlayed 10 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, I don't think there is a formal 5-parsecs module for Foundry, but if you just want to use it as your map you should be able to do so.

Expansion pack 2 gives you a method of using it without a tabletop, basically drawing a map of the terrain and using that. Reviews are on the KZbin channel. I have it. But not tried it out yet. I also have pdf's of 5 leagues from the borderland, more in depth than 5 parsers. Plus ironsworn and starforged. Great settings.

I have the Solo Adventurers Tool Box but haven't actually used it yet. I kinda wanna see if I can get it to work for PF2E if I can, I feel like it might be kinda difficult but the games are similar enough that it might be possible. Oh also one you didn't mention that's really fun is Wolves of Langston it's newer but I just finished the first 2 Chapters and it's really fun!

I am currently playing Pf2e solo using TSAT1 and 2 (The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox) among other things. So there are enough random tables there that are not system-specific and there are others that can be adjusted to Pf2e fairly easily, such as setting a DC. Of course there are things that are not simply transferrable such as the magic item tables.
@steel5315
@steel5315 11 ай бұрын
@fitzgeraldlimisella4393 Hmm PF2E does have a system for if you don't wanna worry about giving players new items tho so I could use that. It just grants your weapons and Armor an automatic upgrade when you reach certain levels. As for other kinds of magic items I could just give myself the items that would work best for my build.

What advice would you have for playing through a Pathfinder 2e Adventure Path solo?
@HowItsPlayed
@HowItsPlayed 10 ай бұрын
I wouldn't recommend it. The only way to play those solo requires you to read everything in advance, meaning there are no surprises to experience as a player. If you want to play PF, I would recommend you use something like Mythic GM emulator and other oracles.

For how much you're jazzing up Mythic's oracles and random tables in general you honestly need to take a closer look at Ironsworn. That game does not only have tons of oracle tables, it also has *really good ones*. Sure, maybe the "low fantasy" thing isn't entirely your thing, that's fair enough. Chances are though, that maybe you just didn't quite get it, as it is rooted in a narrative, fiction-first game style and you seem to be more of a traditional tactical combat oriented player. Honestly, take a closer look, there's so much to find there.

Rant: Can you please talk to somebody in authority over at Paizo and have them change the ridiculous amount of spells that have a 30 foot range limitation. It’s unnecessarily restrictive in an unrealistic way. Most of the spells that have this limitation are almost useless because of it. They need to fix this before they release all Remaster stuff. It’s a huge problem. Even if you add reach, it’s still unhelpful. Take telepathy for an example. It should be at least 120 ft.
