My pastor says TAS is sinful because you're not using the tools God gave you to speedrun. "Did Jesus use save-states when he turned water into wine?" "If God intended us to execute frame-perfect inputs, he would have given us emulators instead of brains."

Common Comments I've encountered: > "TAS is cheating" - How is this cheating? Are they fooling the game? No, because a game is just an scenario with simple objectives like “beat the final boss”, but players are free to decide which way to do it, some players go with full power ups, some will go well equipped, some will prefer the challenge of doing it without weapons, some will take the short path, and some will take the long path, TASers just do the same thing in a different way, or is solitaire the only right way of playing with cards? Are they fooling the community? No, TAS players keep things separated from normal runs, if a TAS run beats a normal run time record, they don’t claim the previous record was beaten, because is a different category, TAS runs are only compared to other TAS runs because they belong in the same category, they don’t try to discredit the normal run achievements. Are they fooling the viewers? No, they just show some amazing gameplay so people can see things they couldn’t with normal runs, they gameplays are meant to be enjoyed by people who like to see incredible speedruns, not to make them think is a normal run, that’s the reason they put the word “TAS” in the title, so anyone can know that is not a normal run, if they wanted to fool someone they woulnd’t put that tag > "It has no merit" - So, taking weeks or months for a 5 minute perfect run has no merit? Setting a new record that demands other people to have lot of patience, dedication and knowledge to beat even with tools has no merit? Just because they use tools doesn’t mean the process of making the runs are effortless, it requires a lot of time to do something good, because the bar is too high, they don’t do simple good runs, they do as close to perfect as possible runs > "With glitches anyone can do it" - Yes, anyone can do awesome things with glitches but not anyone can do perfectly optimized runs (usually because of lack of knowledge/dedication/time), sure, you have a glitch that lets you beat the game under 3 minutes, but can you beat the TAS record of beating the game in 2 minutes 8 seconds? Is not as easy as it sounds > "That way the game can't be enjoyed" - This is very relative, TASers like to do what they do, maybe they don’t play the game as intended, but they still enjoy it, TAS-target-spectators are people who know what a TAS is, and they like it anyway so they still enjoy the run because of it’s awesomeness. If someone doesn’t enjoy it, is not the TASer fault, is just that he/she is watching something not aimed for its tastes, is like watching horror movies when you hate being scared > "They hack (modify the game), to make it work differently" - No they don’t, the use natural bugs that are present in the original game, so those things are possible on real consoles, some are replicable and some aren’t, but that’s because of human limitations, but aside from that, the glitches are a natural part of the original game. They don’t modify game elements to do the gameplays, the exceptions are for creating new content and ways to play, like creating new levels, but that’s a different subject

Santarrosa44 yes to do hack to make it work differently but the tas community decided it doesnt count if your only ahcking the clock speed so you can frame by a frame. Normal operation of hardware has lots of frames a second and you cant control that the community should own the fact that theyr hacking and say yes were hacking so what whats so bad about hacking
@Santarrosa44
@Santarrosa44 7 жыл бұрын
jimbo smith you are right, and I agree about the frame by frame, but to clarify, I was talking about modifying elements of the game like cooldown times, player stats, enemy behavior, etc. specifically I was trying to say that glitches are not hacking, for example, the wrong warp glitch in ocarina of time that lets child Link fight against Ganon, anyone could think that the game code was hacked (modified) to make it teleport Link directly to the final battle, while in fact is a natural glitch of the game and it happens without the need of changing the game code, TASers simply take advantage of the existence of those glitches
@JorWat25

For "It has no merit", it seems some people actually think that a TAS is made completely by a computer, i.e. you give a program a game, and it automatically generates a speedrun.

I seen regular speed runners accepting TAS as part of the community. I remember when they hated TAS and call therm cheaters but not realizing how difficult it can be to build a complete TAS. Even to the point that it is harder that regular speed running (For 3D that is). Eventually TAS community found a lot of glitches that some eventually become humanly possible due to further research. Regular runners now have to accept TAS as part of their community due to how many important discovers they did. Others didn't take it so well and quit when TAS community found a major skip that become RTA. Few examples are: Palace skip is one that was found using TAS. Now it is RTA possible which is seen at AGDQ 2017. Someone found a hidden rainbow coin in DK 64, 17 years after release. He used TAS to find an unusual values.

But it’s more or less impossible, because not only do you have to be frame perfect, but with some runs (especially Super Mario 64) the button mashing is ridiculously fast, so you could only physically do it as fast as possible by slowing down the game.

Nice explanations to clear up common misconceptions, which aren't really that prevalent nowadays given most people are aware of the differences between RTA and TAS. RTA is basically how fast can you complete the game using the resources and RNG you're given, trying to minimize human error as much as possible. TAS is basically answering the question of how fast could you beat the game if you could control every RNG variable and get every input perfect.

Oh cool, I never realised I've commented here before. I recently started making my first TAS for Tony Hawk's Underground 2 on pcsx2-rr, but the inputs take at least 5 frames to have any effect and it's really annoying me. I think it's a problem with the game and not the emulator. Does mario 64 have any delayed-input effects while TAS'ing?

I love TAS runs, I'm more interested in the strategies and glitches used to break games more than the skill aspect, and TAS runs can make use of so many optimizations that would otherwise be missed, whether they be difficult skips that skip half the game, or a small optimization that saves only a single frame.

"Playback of the input uses no tools." Well, aside from the playing back of that input! Also I'd just like to mention that the best way to TAS is to not press the input buttons yourself, even for simple 2D games. If you can get a TAS Editor or TAStudio-like tool, that's much more effective. All of my TASes are done this way. (When creating most of my TASes I only use my keyboard buttons for controlling framerate/advancing/pausing and saving/loading savestates. The rest is the mouse.) It's unfortunate that this tool is so overlooked by many TASers. Some I've talked to even actively reject it because they don't immediately understand the benefits (which are huge) or think it's just more convenient to do what they're used to (when convenience is actually one of the benefits!). Yes it is very awkward to TAS like this at first and it will take time to learn and get used to, but it's _so_ worth it.

I don't understand why people could even think TAS is cheating, speedrunning have a lot of categories; 0%, 100%, glitchless, etc, so why a computer beating the game can't be a category, and the configurations of that computer are not for default, the programmer of the TAS has to make it frame by frame in the parts that need it, it could be considered cheating if it's not stated that is a TAS and the speedrunner sais that is he beating the game by himself. really apprecialbe explanation altough it made me changed my mind about going on to TAS myself. The fact that you were able to explain it so clearly makes me realized how daunting and tideous the process can be. I wanted to do some TAS to bring forth some fan made story telling i love to create but i'm not sure it is worth the investement now.

All people who work with old games sound exactly the same. MagicScrumpy, maker of Super Smash Bros Melee mods sounds exactly like Stryder7x, who does Paper Mario TAS runs and glitch explanations. They all sound exactly the same. More seriously, it is just your imagination. Either that or parallel universes.

hijong park ai in games have the ability to be frame perfect. The ai is made in a way so that it’s fair To the player. Try playing street fighter with a frame perfect ai. (Which you can do). You’ll get perfected every time.

how TAS deal with RNG? every TAS start from fixed seeds?
@quaternaryyy
@quaternaryyy 7 жыл бұрын
Felds Liscia Usually every console starts with a fixed RNG seed when you power it on, and it advances based off of some "crazy" value, such as the amount of time spent on the main menu (Final Fantasy IV) or the amount of text characters drawn to the screen (Paper Mario: TTYD). Taking a peek through the game's code can reveal all of the methods that can be used to get "perfect" randomness, and TASers routinely "manipulate luck" by carefully playing with all these different triggers 😃

How is it "cheating" if they announce it's TAS? You need to have the mental capacity of a 6 year old to actually think that's even remotely cheating.

I always looked at TAS runs as the runs that show the theoreticly possible perfect run if all the stars would line together, you got the jackpot in lottery and trained speedrunning one game for 5 entire lifes at once. Just a "What if..." run. And that is super fascinating for me.

cheating is just about being dishonest/unfair. like going against the rules of a competition. for example, splicing footage is always gonna be invalid to any form of competition. but if someone did it just for fun (not to be dishonest/unfair) then it's not cheating. it's just a segmented run (which usually involves multiple players clips) to show what's humanly possible. and even literal in-game cheats (like in gta) would only be considered cheating, in competition to someone not using cheats. because it'd obviously be unfair competitively. but then again they may be having an unfair competition on purpose. heck, even some games specifically let you give players a handicap. (like a much stronger dude holding an arm behind his back to be fairer to a weaker individual) also choice isn't unfair. you could say it's unfair that people are using different options (like choosing automatic/manual in mk), but that's their own choice in the competition. these choices aren't against their rules. and if you prefer to watch completely equalized competitions (same exact loadouts), then that's ok too. a tas itself has nothing to do with cheating. tas's don't cheat. people do. lol
