doesn't really happen in the sims 3 if you just play the base game i figured it's the simulation engine lagging behind abit from having all the dlc's installed, or lots of mods. the sims 4 starts to have similar issues with all the dlc's installed, but also you see lag sometimes during gameplay and pausing and unpausing fixes it.

Another part of the collision system ported from SM64 is how floor collision initializes the playable level space and anything not directly above floor collision seems to be obstructed by an invisible wall even though it isn't. This is why it looks like you're phasing through a wall when doing EYG. What's actually going on is that the juice block creates a hole in the uninitialized space due to having floor collision.

I'd actually argue that Super Mario Sunshine's pause menu doesn't fulfil the role of "suspend[ing] gameplay until the play either unpauses, or decides to save and quit" with flying colours, purely for the reason that for some reason SMS registers pressing start on the pause screen the same as it registers pressing A instead of simply exiting the pause menu, making it way too easy to accidentally exit an area.
