Best explanation I've seen yet. The geometric interpretation is essential. Few ever mention that the original constraint is partial lambda, so that all of the partials of L correspond to all of the equations to be solved. That's a beautiful thing. But also multiple constraints and shadow price, all in one video.

It is easier to convert practical problems into optimization problems than to convert them into PDE. Optimization is way more flexible. I gotta learn some optimization technique now, it is really powerful

@nahaymath Either LaTex or the "Insert Equation" feature in newer versions of Word. I find the latter to be sufficient for the vast majority of purposes, and it's easy to either copy and paste into PowerPoint or take a screen shot of and turn into an image.

8:57 You are correct, the Langrangian is not the same as a Lagrange Multiplier, which is also not the same as a Lagrange Point. J.L.L. was a prolific mathematician!!!

At about 9:30 you insert a statement that the LaGrangian is a physics thing. Could you use some physics analogy to prove this statement? I think it would be very helpful to use some physics analogies in economics teaching.

@Eddie Olayo There is no strong reason to do three-variable examples, because they work exactly like two-variable problems - the only difference is that three-variable problems are more tedious and practically impossible to sketch as graphs. My math book even explicitly points out that all multivariable definitions are made in ℝ³, and that this can be extended to higher dimensions when necessary.

lagrange multiplier is the optimization something. mathematically optimization is vague, it must be either maximum or minimum findings. so how do you know which way lagrange multiplier gives you, max or min?
@axe86312 жыл бұрын
Truly, first order conditions are a neccessary but not sufficient condition for optimality. Deriving SOC is redundant iff the underlying indifference curves exhibit a diminshing marginal rate of substitution (preference for a portfolio of goods) ==> aka exhibit strict quasi-concavity. If one doesnt want to make said assumption, SOC can be derived using matrix algebra==> augmented Hessian matrix.

@Astro-X8 жыл бұрын
f(x,y) is a function with 2 variables and she was just using the contour lines as an example to graph it on a scalar field. But yes if she had the tools she could do it in a 3D space plot.

How do I change from maximization to a minimization?
@gabrielwong199110 жыл бұрын
i am still looking for an answer too! But what i think is if it is a + after the objective function. I.e. Objective function + lambda (constraint equation) that is maximizing.. If it has a -ve sign i.e. I.e. Objective function - lambda (constraint equation) then it is minimizing
