Feller, by far you are the only one who takes the time to explain thoroughly and concise other than anyone else I’ve seen. Thank you.

The larger scale is used for sectional charts and the smaller scale is used for WAC charts. The World Aeronautical Charts were intended for aircraft flying higher and faster but less than the big jets. It's not an issue now that the FAA stopped making the WAC charts as of Sept 15, 2015 but it's still printed on the plotters. I took a large marker and covered markings for the WAC side in preparation for the test. Didn't want to screw myself.

I was just going to say: I'm not a pilot but I know that there are a few different VFR Charts of different scales. Same for land navigation, on protractor you'll find a few different scales for measuring.

I did not know that the FAA stopped making world charts. Why so? Wouldnt that make the hand plotting harder for commercial and long range pilots? I assume it's because most pilots are using electronic means to chart these days?

the smaller scale on the back seems to be used for the sectionals in their private pilot written practice book. this is nice because its full of the actual charts they give you on the exam apparently

Thank you Dr. Alan Feller!! I was struggling with using the plotter, because I also did not realize that my plotter only shows east and west up at the top and I was just looking at the numbers after I put the plotter on the sectional and wondering why I wasn’t coming up with the correct true course. Thank you for pointing out such a simple thing that can easily be overlooked to someone who is new to aviation.

Do not ignore the scale. Just learn how to use it correctly. It's easy. What you're doing wrong is that you're lining up the straight edge of the ruler with either a meridian or a line of latitude. What you ought to be doing is lining up the straight edge with your desired course (which you should have already drawn with a pencil), then sliding the hole along that course where it will intersect a meridian, a line of longitude. Then, take the reading from the protractor.

Yes Sir absolutely correct and as a check you can use the mariner method of transferring the course line to a VOR compass rose and reading the magnetic course. All three methods produce the correct results. In flight planning it is always good to utilize alternate methods.

Well if you take a look at your charts, there's stated which scale you should use. I think the larger scale is for ratio 1:50 000 and the smaller is for 1: 200 000

One side is for maps scaled 1:500k and other for 1:1000k. It's that simple...
@mihaiweber5615
@mihaiweber5615 3 жыл бұрын
Oh, how simple it was...just to open your eyes Alan and see that on the two faces of the plotter there are 2 different markings becorse they are related to 2 different scales, meaning to be used on the two traditional aeronautical maps- 1:500.000 and 1:1.000.000. So selecting the right side ( facing your eyes) and placing the plotter so accordingly on the map in correct relation to the MAP SCALE, it wil indicate the correct distances, be it in nautical or statute miles. So please DO NOT DROP everything the plotter has embeded in...it was created and designed to solve exactly THIS topic (among others ) , regarding practical navigation planning !!! :) :) :) !!!

the scale has different lengths depending on the map scale. i.e. 1" = 5 mi or 1" = 10 miles it depends on the legend. using the wrong scale can lead to incorrect distances.

Nope. 1" either equals 7.8 miles or 15.7 miles.

The advise in this video, especially about deriving the course direction is INCORRECT ! Please see my comments on Allan Feller video "Using the Navigational Plotter - Example 1". Alan Feller, please delete this video before more students (and pilots?) are mislead into thinking their confusion is justified. The plotter is designed correctly, although a bit confusing initially.

They designed the plotter to be "easier" to use but it really only makes it confusing. There really is no "correct" way to design a plotter as it boils down to convention. In this instance, I personally go with Allen on this.

There really is no correct way to design a plotter has only boils down to convention. Whoever originally designed the plotter tried to design it for people who only follow directions and don't think. I will go with Allan on this one.

Alan.as for the compass you simply don't know how to use it. You dont have to forget about it as you can read the course directly from it. Consider delete this confusing video as its over 3 years old. Make a new one. Best regards.
