I'm a retired Navy engineer who owned a Catalina 30 for a few years, living on it and experiencing a wee little bit of what you are doing. I think you've done absolutely great ! It's easy for me to see how you've put together the solar electric system which, as I see, it quite expansive and it will serve you well. Anyone can see progress you've made from what you described as the start point with your boat. Keep moving forward with your projects as you can. I always say I'd rather try and fail than to fail to try. So yeah, boats are a major project always in progress. There's no end and it seems sometimes like there's also repairs to do and maintenance to attend to. Just keep the optimism and always remember why you're doing what you're doing. Take care and happy sailing.....

Just a suggestion, there are 2 stroke outboards available in the US, they're just used. Most outboard motors don't ever get enough use to wear them out, at least in the US, and they are dead simple to fix. Typically the only things that go wrong with them are the coils go bad, the water pump impellers get hard and the carbs gum up. If you stick with the major brands parts are readily available. Something to think about for the plywood cabinets is Formica. It's easy to install, tough as nail and all you need is some Formica, some contact cement, a 3 inch roller and some covers, a J-roller and a trim router with a straight bit and a trim bit. All of the supplies above can be had for less than $100 or so. It's not nearly as tough as you might think and looks very good when you're done. Good luck on your travels.
@AmysSoloSailingAdventures

I had considered buying a used one while still in the states. It just never happened. I have now purchased a brand new 2 stroke, which I love! I love your comments about Formica! I’ll be doing countless interior and cosmetic upgrades while holed up during hurricane season.

Being a minimalist a boat or roommate would be ideal for me. I’ll be 58 this summer. So Hopefully I’ll find a job soon after I get there. Gad dang! You got a sweet ride. Paint topside can be applied anywhere, so good on you to get out there. A suggestion (as you asked for), it’s always wise to take a few wraps of chain around your cleat even though you’re using a chain hook. It’s an additional safety measure to protect your anchor winch if something accidentally lets go. Fair winds!

With all the research I did, I went with twice the solar wattage as the battery amperage. 1200 watts solar, 600 amp/hrs battery. It’s been a great combination so far! Probably a bit overkill for just me, but I’d rather have too much than too little. I’m in Farmers Cay right now, headed south to Georgetown, where I’ll be able to buy a new 15hp 2 stroke. I’ve got a bit of tunnel vision at the moment, because this 20hp 4 stroke is such a burden.

@@AmysSoloSailingAdventures Have you considered electric outboard? The Rigging Doctor you tube channel aka Sailing Wisdom (the boat name is Wisdom) has used one and loved it. I've considered a Torqueedo since they are very easy to buy in most places. The smaller ones (up to 5hp) have removable battery (buy a second, charge one while using the other). The larger (up to 25hp) have separate batteries and get very pricey above 9.9hp (not cheap at that size either). I sailed engineless on a smaller boat for a long time but now might buy an electric and share it with the boat (23ft) and dinghy. Mostly the boat since I generally row the dinghy (a hard dinghy - one that rows - and won't poke a hole and deflate).

@@curtisvillamizar6751I thought about it. But compared to a gas outboard, they’re super expensive still.

@@AmysSoloSailingAdventures I'm not sure where you got the 2:1 solar watt to battery amp idea. Boats with electric auxilliary often have 10-20 kWh of battery (10-20 kWh is roughly 200-400 Ah at 48V which is equivalent to 800-1600 Ah at 12V). One rule is that you get 4-5x the kWh of charging per day per kW of solar on a sunny day (5x in tropics). So 1200W (1.2kW) is 6kWh per day on the best days. Your video shows 6 12V 100 Ah batteries so that is considered 300 Ah at 24V or about 7.5kWh so a good size. They are Battle Born so Li-ion so you can draw it down low and use 80% of that on shady days so you have about one days battery storage (or a day to fully recharge, 2-3 or more considering you'll be drawing some load). The more battery the better. Li-fion doesn't care about being recharged gradually over days like lead acid does (which might be where your "rule" came from). On the down side more battery means more money and you need to find a place to put them.

I really like your swim platform. Adventureman Dan did the same thing. I would probably rather have a mechanical windvane system and a half swim platform combination because the windvane is so useful especially as a backup to your auto helm or visa versa on long passages and basically never breaks. You should get some spare belts for that as they do end up breaking every now and then. I bet that you wish that you had a proper gambled stove and oven combination so that you can bake things. I don't blame you for stopping the work and setting sail. I also would much rather have a two stroke than a four stroke outboard. Suggestion on paint color for your deck. I'd go with white because any other color that you put on will burn your feet. You can do that anytime as long as all of the stuff that matters is done. Any plans on upgrading to a different boat latter on now that you've sailed for a few months? Did you get any sponsorships on any of your gear, what did you do for a career before deciding on going cruising full time and how long do you think you can cruise for before you run out of money if you don't mind me asking? What all came with your $5,000 boat? A lot of that stuff looks brand new.

At the time I was building Maritopia out, a swim platform was a requirement for me. Now that I’ve sailed for a season, I’d rather have a windvane. But the swim platform has been amazing! I like the gimbaling stovetop that I built. I wouldn’t use an oven if I had one. But I do have a pressure cooker, so that makes up for not having an oven. No sponsorships, but I also haven’t tried by reaching out to anyone. Yeah, the nonskid I have is white….i just haven’t put it on. lol. Been too busy enjoying the cruising life. A new boat….hmmmm? 🤔

It’s getting there. 🤟 But still quite a few things to do. I decided to take the entire cruising season off from projects, and actually enjoy the boat. But the projects will start up again as soon as I’m holed up for hurricane season. The first thing on the list will be to replace all the port lights. Then paint and apply nonskid to the deck.

@@AmysSoloSailingAdventures I feel your pain about having a break. Otherwise it defeats the purpose of sailing. I have done the same thing for a while. I did non skid just in the cockpit and it made a big difference since was the area where I would spend most of the time while outside. I will be looking to watch your progress.
