Nice to be self-sufficient .. your sailboat is much larger than my dinghy sized Montgomery 17’er. My wife just passed after 56 beautiful yeArs together.. At 78 now I’m getting at least a small boat under my old legs here on Puget Sound near Seattle.. it’s been 35 yrs since I set sail so wish me luck. Great storm ⛈️ footage n so forth. I’ll try to follow along Skipper.. cheers from Pacific N.W. Fairwinds. Nick

It was horrible! My entire livelihood is on the boat. One wrong move, and it could be gone in seconds. I ended up being very fortunate. And I learned from that grounding. So not all bad, I suppose.

Hi my first visit to your channel. Good stuff, I'll be back. Sailing always has just another trap round the next corner, we have been at it since 1973, and still learn. I saw your dinghy out in storm with outboard on. Reminded me last year at anchor in shelteded river, over night wind and tide swung us round and gust flipped my dinghy imersing my ne outboard. Next morning my dog sat cross legged for hours as I repaired/dried my engine the wind still too wild to get ashore by oares. So have that one on me, dinghys fly in gale, but always come down with outboard under!! . Bit like when you drop your bread always jam side in the dirt. Hey Amy...first video I've watched. After 15 plus years of sailing with my husband, many of them in the Bahamas, he sold his business, and 2 days later he had a massive stroke and died. We were getting ready to spend 6 months in the Bahamas. I did not know if I had the strength to carry on, but I am slowly but surely. My goal is to get back over there, but I'm not emotionally ready just yet...Good on you for following your dreams!! Keep it up!

I am a full time cruiser who, of course, inevitability meet other full time cruisers. Of all if them, the one most happy with their choice of boat was one doing it in an old Pearson. Good choice!
@AmysSoloSailingAdventures
@AmysSoloSailingAdventures 7 ай бұрын
While I’ve lived on my boat for almost 2 years now, I’m new to cruising. But I’m loving every second (well, other than bottoming out)! I really love my Pearson because it was essentially a blank slate. I knew nothing about sailboats, or the ocean really, until I started working on her. Maritopia has great bones and is slowly coming back to her true glory.

@AmysSoloSailingAdventures I think that was the point he made, i.e., that the Pearson has good bones. Over the years, you will add and remove equipment, but the underlying bones are good. I am doing my cruising in a CAL, for similar reasons. Safe cruising.

A windless is definitely a must! Mine quit working when I dropped anchor a few weeks ago. Didn’t have a secondary ready to toss over immediately. I was able to repair the windless, but it’s such an important item for me that I’ve ordered a brand new spare.

Quite! There was a manual Lewmar before and it required good conditions to use it singlehanded. Now a Lofrans Tigres is waiting to get tightened down on the foredeck. Just need some more degrees warmer to get the sealant to harden. But I reckon in two weeks it should be fine. Then I need to make a visit on the hard to exchange some throughulls before going into the drink again. Some mast work and then I’m off. Hopefully in April or at least in May. Would be nice to share the same anchorage at some point. What’s your intentions for this year?
@AmysSoloSailingAdventures
@AmysSoloSailingAdventures 7 ай бұрын
Sounds like you’ve got a great plan! That Tigres will be awesome! I’m not sure on my own plans. DR, PR or Guatemala for hurricane season. Though I think PR is where I’ll end up, since it’s much easier and cheaper to get parts. But would much rather go over to Guatemala or Panama, since hurricanes rarely hit there. I’m really not sure. Now that I’m not working, I don’t like making real plans. lol.

My buddy boat swears by having two anchors out in a blow. Conversely, my experience is that two anchors can snag on each other, so i favor one good anchor. I guess it all depends on the boat, the anchor and one's personal experience.
@AmysSoloSailingAdventures

I’ve used 2 anchors twice now and, fortunately, it worked perfectly both times. I have a much bigger Mantus anchor that I could put on, but my windless struggles to lift it. So I only put it on during hurricane season.

Yes, CHIEFS!!! By far, the hardest part was finally getting to the point where I was ok with quitting work, selling everything and casting off. It’s not a simple task to give up a career I’d built for myself. But for sailing itself, the biggest challenge has been to accept that the boat can handle rougher conditions than I can, and to trust in the boat.

@AmysSoloSailingAdventures
@AmysSoloSailingAdventures 7 ай бұрын
I’ve considered it, but chose not to. My halyards are on the outside. Being solo, a line fouling on a mast step is the last thing I want, because it’d force me to leave the cockpit. But I still think about how nice it’d be to have them.
@stephenburnage7687

Most cruisers that install mast steps regret it, as they constantly snag the halyards and other lines.
@glenndavis479
@glenndavis479 7 ай бұрын
@@stephenburnage7687 That's why they invented folding mast steps , gaffers are obviously a problem but then again they use ratlines...personally I prefer them to anything , just and old pirate at heart I guess. I would say that any blue water cruisers that have neither have a designated electric winch for the purpose which also could be a solution but not the best for a solo sailor. One has to factor in many variables...age and weight are but 2 , sea state is another along with dire necessity in an emergency when overall safety is an underlying concern. I respect personal choice but I'm just not sure that "Most cruisers regret it" is an accurate statement to be honest.
@stephenburnage7687
@stephenburnage7687 7 ай бұрын
@glenndavis479 Put it this way, I have never met a full time sailor that wanted them (or used them when they had them). But, yes, if your fixed rigging is of a suitable design, rat lines are a viable alternative. Personally, at 72, I still climb my mast, regularly, with a self climber. I can get to the spreader height in about three minutes and back down again in under a minute, without having to trust anyone to hoist me up (or down) and knowing, when I am back down on deck, that my mast is free of potential obstructions.

I suppose a bit of semantics. So far I’ve been able to research and plan well enough that I’ve not been through any real storms while sailing. But I’m still very new to this lifestyle, so I’m probably over analyzing everything. I wouldn’t trade it for anything, though. Each day is a different adventure. Thank you very much for watching!

@AmysSoloSailingAdventures Squalls are a pain in the a*rse which are basically micro-storms. They can hit 50kts or more but the good thing is they don't last long so you learn to ride them out. Once you've been through a dozen of them you'll be cosy in 35kts. Yes I reef and do what I can to keep the boat secure but I'm not much concerned until the waves hit 15 feet and 40kts and then I run downwind whenever possible. Sea you on the water at some point 😉

Oh wow, no way am I ready for 40+ while underway! I’m one day I’ll have that confidence in myself. But it’ll probably be a while. I’m learning each and every day though.

True ! 🤣😂 I rolled my 23’ sloop once in the Atlantic with 30’ seas! Popped back up like a bobber! Thank the Gods and Goddesses! you get used to it but never get a way from that adrenaline and fear that wells up in your gut! Been sooo sailing 50 years this year and now thankfully my 23’ grew up to be a 40’ Beneteau Oceanis 🤣😂

@adrenazanetti3660 Yes, size does matter in sailing. Mines only 32 feet and is a perfect size for me except when the waves are bigger than 15feet and then I risk capsize from breaking waves on the beam. I've been knocked over but never fully rolled.....suspect it will happen one day. Which was another thing I noticed Amy....you may want to start securing anything that will go flying if inverted.

@@AmysSoloSailingAdventures if you research it on utube recently you will most likely find that they're saying now is that we are at the brink of it. But yes it's definitely coming. There are many reasons for it and most people have normalcy bias in which think that they're safe from anything that can happen because they haven't experienced any history of wars in the past. It's also Biblical of what is to come. Who is mystery Babylon that will be destroyed in Bible prophecy?

@@AmysSoloSailingAdventures I'm a Linux guy, so this might not be that helpful for you, but Kdenlive is pretty much an 'industrial strength' editor that's free. I believe it's supposed to work on Windows, but I've never tried it there. Davinci has a free version that's supposed to be the same 'industrial strength' version, though they try to get you to buy for the latest bells and whistles. It's supposed to work on Linux, but it won't for me (some complaint about my graphics card; why does it have that dependency anyway?). If you're on Windows, it might work perfectly well for you. I don't think you need any of the bells and whistles most editors are charging for, just need to have a timeline and cut and paste, so should be able to do very well with the free stuff. Are you going to be using 'lavaliere' microphones, as opposed to 'camera audio,' where the mic is either built-in or plugged into the camera? While it's nice to have camera audio for syncing things, in my experience having separate audio from a mic attached to you gets you way better results. What sort of camera and lenses are you working with? I mostly leave that stuff to my DP, but have endeavored to learn details so I can speak their language. As long as you don't care about cinema and 24 fps, there are plenty of very decent, yet inexpensive cameras that will record 1080 no problem. 4K is supposed to be the next Great Thing, but mostly what it does is take up 4x the space. And unless you're planning on a lot of post processing of the imagery, which I don't see for your project (for movies, we usually want 'raw,' which is even more bloated), all that data is just taking up space that KZbin will trim away, assuming you want to take 4x longer to upload it. Even if you have a 4K camera, you can take 1080 'footage' and should be able to do just as well.
