My husband just bought me the whole SurfPrep system….he just doesn’t know it yet. I figure the next Christmas, birthday and Mother’s Day and we’ll be square. I’m old and never ever ask for jewelry, expensive purses or shoes and this is a great investment. I’m at the starting gate of updating all my kitchen and office cabinets and the thought of hand sanding was making me depressed! Now, I’m stoked to get started! I just refurbished my teak patio tables and after a week of numbed hands, 3 packs of sand paper discs and the atrocious amounts of dust, I simply can’t do OG sanding anymore. This system is a game changer!

I saw this video a long time ago, but I'm just now unboxing and getting into my Surf Prep that I got for Christmas. This video has been really helpful to introduce me to my sander. And I have that same shop vac from Costco, so I just contacted Surf Prep to find out which reducer I need to connect to my Dewalt hose. I didn't know that was an option! I have the reducer to connect my black and blue Surf Prep hoses to the shop vac, but the added distance with the Dewalt hose will be nice.

Its called a paddle switch, and it's very convenient on a sander. But I can't believe how expensive the Surfprep sander is. $649 roughly, before tax or shipping. On the two DeWalt sanders, simply take the dustbags off and attach your vac hose, you'll get good dust collection with those two sanders also.

Happy Mother's Day Brandy!! I'm just curious, you don't even need your old mouse sander for corners and little details? I'm covered in a thick layer of sanding dust asking myself why the heck I'm not wearing a mask but it's just too hot to be breathing my own air! I've got lupus and R.A. so my hands and shoulders are killing me using these cheap, heavy, extremely dusty sanders. The Surfprep seems to be a much healthier option, and much lighter, less painful way to go! I'm not one to wear gloves and a mask so Surfprep would save my lungs and hopefully my shoulder too. I just need to sell some furniture to afford one after this phenomenal video has answered any questions we could have. You're such a wealth of knowledge Brandy! A natural born teacher, always explaining everything so clearly so even your blonde ADHD viewers, like me can thoroughly understand. I can't thank you enough for sharing all your amazing videos with anyone looking to learn and be completely inspired! Maybe I should go listen again because I'm sure you already answered my question about the mouse sander. My ears are definitely filled with dust. Agreed, those silly dust catchers don't catch ANYTHING! 😅

We are absolutely going to get one of these amazing sander systems!!!!! My Dear Hubby and I have used a well-loved quarter-sheet Makita palm sander, with no dust collection ability, for almost 40 years (cough, cough, wheeeeze). Old "Blue Sandy" has never failed us, but I have to wonder how many pounds of sawdust we have inhaled over the years in spite of dust masks and respirators. Plus, wherever we sand, everything is always covered with sawdust, in spite of using a ventilation/filtration/exhaust fan. That means it has been pretty much impossible to remove all the sawdust in a space so we can final finish anything without getting some dust in the finish. Arg! We are getting ready to start renovating/restoring/un-remuddling the kitchen and bathroom (and my workroom, and the living room, and the bedrooms, and the dining room, and ... ) in our 1927 farmhouse. I was thinking we would need lung transplants by the time we are finished. A SurfPrep may just save our ability to breathe. Yeehaa.

Stearated, aluminum oxide sandpaper is typically good enough for modern woodworking (this is what Surfprep uses for most of their sand papers). Garnet based has dropped in popularity and typically doesn't last as long. The newer ceramic paper has its pro's and con's. Apparently 3M's Cubitron is the hottest new product kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2O5mKKYmr-Wm5I . Too many people don't understand the differences between materials, or how to read the back of the paper to know what their paper is made from. Not all sandpaper is the same. There is an excellent Woodworker magazine article that is easily found online that details how to read the different grades and materials listed on the papers, and which ones work best. Do some research, and it will save you a bunch of grief, or as Brandy says, from spending the same for twice as much paper that is half as good. Some things it doesn't pay to be too "frugal"...

I'm glad that the Surfprep sander is working out well for you, but anytime you go from a cheap tool to a prolevel you will notice this difference. The Surfprep sanders are great, they don't actually make these, they are a rebrand, sold under several brand names. I just recently became aware of Surfprep and I think that the 1/2" thick soft pads are the "Killer Application" of this system. I use a Festool RTS 400 which is very similar in shape and specs, it has the same 2mm orbit. I was happy to find out that Surfprep recently released the 5mm and 1/2" pads for the Festool RTS [rectangular], DTS delta shape [Triangular or mouse] as well 5" and 6" discs in several hole patterns. They are available in Med, Fine and Very Fine. Again, the Surfprep machines are industrial quality, but the vacuum connection appears to be a real mess, especially compared to the Festool system. First off, I've used screw on hose previously and it needs constant retightening. Also, multiple connections in the hose path reduces dust collection efficiency and makes areas for dust to build up inside the hose. I have 2 Festool sanders and the least expensive Festool vac. The hose slides onto the sanders and locks with 1/4 turn twist, the other end goes into the vac, never comes off. The other benefit is that the Festool power cords detach at the tool, so I have a DIY arm that holds my dust hose and power cord over my work surface.. then I can quickly swap tools and the power and dust hose stay put. My Festool dust collector is the CT-15, it is the newest and cheapest at $350. I know, expensive compared to a Rigid shop vac, but worth every penny. Very small, very powerful. It has an onboard outlet, plug a tool in and it triggers the vac - and then powers off a few seconds after you turn the tool off. It also has variable suction, when sanding very flat surfaces too much suction can cause deep swirl marks. The RTS 400 is $280 and comes with an edge protector, an optional dust bag [that works] and in a systainer tool box. It is not brushless like the Ray, and maybe not a true industrial machine, but it very robust and almost half the price. The Festool hole pattern has more, but smaller holes closer to inside of the pad, vastly improving dust collection. So that would be about $630 for a similar sander and a world class duct collector. The time saved by super simple hose connection and the auto start-stop is amazing!
@katherinemorrison39833 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this comment. I just watched a video about Festool vs. Surfprep and want to gather as much info as possible before I make a choice. It's sounding like Festool is better...
@fotopdo3 жыл бұрын
@@katherinemorrison3983 Surfprep now makes their 1/2" foam pads for the Festool RTS and DTS sanders [rectangular and delta] as well as 5 inch round in Festool and other brands hole combinations. They are only offered in Med, Fine or Extra fine, while you can get many more grits for the SP sanders. But the 3 grits work well for most fairly smooth surfaces. And these pads are only worth the extra cost when sanding curved surfaces.
