vedanta.org In this series of talks, Swami Sarvapriyananda lucidly unfolds the path to direct "Self-Realization" presented by Adi Shankaracharya in Aparokshanubhuti. This talk - delivered on October 13, 2016 at the Vedanta Temple in Hollywood, CA - covers verses 29 and 30 in "Aparokshanubhuti (Self-Realization)". The text for this series is a translation of Adi Shankaracharya's Aparokshanubhuti by Swami Vimuktananda. See our Facebook page for a .pdf of a Roman transliteration of the text.

Swami Sarvapriyananda is an outstanding teacher. He is the best communicator of Advaita Vedanta since Swami Prbhavananda so many years ago. His way of teaching penetrates the mind to a deeper level, more so than anyone I have heard. It is a privilege to listen to him here and Issaquah Washington, a place that seems devoid of interest in Advaita Vedanta. Thank you for continuing to post lectures by this wonderful man

George Poggemann yes indeed, he is one of the best and explains with outstanding clarity. Another outstanding speaker of Advaita Vedanta I found is Ira Schepetin, though there only a few of his talks that can be found in KZbin. Also those are on the basic understanding of Advaita. Swamiji is going much deeper.

Namaste ! The “Anidam Chaitanyam” beautifully brought out the specific meaning of THAT in TAT TVAM ASI. - Chaitanyam is not idam - Consciousness is not “this awareness”. If you can eliminate / ignore “this” from a thing, that which is not this would be consciousness. This world, body, mind, breath, thought, intellect, emotion, ….., if you can tell someone about this as an explanation, it is not consciousness. When you define and explain, you have pointed out “this” - Idam. Thus consciousness is - “not this” (Idam), = THAT (TAT). The most interesting and profound thing I can contemplate about, is Me (not me). It is logically shown that Me is That. Now the aim is to make this logical conclusion into an internal experience..

I have not yet come across some one so erudite who explains key differences and agreements of different eastern , western philosophies, and modern science to project holistic view of Advaita in modern language citing examples from our everyday experiences. This is what makes him unique and his deep knowledge is evident from his completely unbiased view - true a sign of someone established in truth. I am looking forward to Shravana of key Upanishads and Brahma Sutra. Please accept my sincere thanks for making this invaluable knowledge public.

I always enjoy these lectures. Thank you, Swamiji. I gave this a thumbs up largely because of all the lively discussion at the end. One thing that doesn't quite make sense to me is Pure Consciousness not knowing itself directly. When the mind is absent in deep sleep and pure consciousness knows nothing, what is it? If there is nothing it is like to be pure consciousness (the Self) in and of itself, it seems as good as unconsciousness...at the most, it seems like merely POTENTIAL consciousness. Since everything is the Self, that everything would have to include the mind, so could it not be said that the Self contains mind as an inseparable mode or attribute (not a temporily possessd attribute, but an eternally expressed attribute); therefore the Self always knows itself via its eternal mental attribute? When it comes down to it, it seems much more parsimonious to say that the Self knows itself intransitively and nonconceptually (not identifying itself as any particular mental or physically object). I mean no disrespect whatsoever and I appreciate your uncommon clarity and humor.

Thank you for uploading These Videos. Thank you Swamiji, to explain us so much complex subjects from Upanishads in words, which we can understand. Thanks to Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Swami Vivekananda, for sending you and giving you enough strength to study all our scriptures from different religions and life , teachings of Ramakrishna, Vivakenanada . You are making simple curry from those and presenting to us to Eat. I am till unlucky to digest that.

I think it’s funny to talk about an “introduction” the Vedanta, because even a brief glance at this Tradition is diving into the deep end. It’s hard to water down “Tat Tvam Asi”.

Pranam Swamiji. Blessed to be able to hear your discourses. Swamiji, how do the three different concepts compare i.e. Kosha (Annamaya, etc.), Sharira (Karana, etc.) and Avastha, consciousness (Turiya)?

Without the mind, Brahman (Nirguna Brahman) does not know itself? If it does not know itself, then is it the case that the simple, calm feeling of "I Am" can only be there during those periods when the mind is operating (and in a state of calm inquiry or gyana)? As far as Saguna Brahman/Ishwara goes, is it the case that Saguna Brahman/Ishwara arises out of a prior state of unknowing? Would the state of Moksha after death (after dealing with karma and attaining knowledge) then not feel like anything at all? If so, what does it mean to call it a Self? Please let me know if I am making assumptions and help me to understand, if you don't mind.

The problem is that you have realised Existence and Consciousness but still you have hard time in experiencing the BLISS. When you get the bliss then you will realise that Nirguna Brahma is not a deep coma state.

Are there any today who are on par with Ramakrishna, Muktananda, Anandamayi Ma, or Ramana Rshi? Or even close to Trailanga Swami, Yogananda, Totapuri, or Thirumular? Anyone? I find this singularly disturbing that Realized Beings aren't present right now in the present - here - in NYC, or LA, or Seattle, or Miami. Why?

@santhoshgopinath816

My understanding - Word meaning of Nishchalam is - "unmoving". . There is a verse I have come across, a part of which goes like - ......"tadejati, tannejati...." means, That moves, That does not move. That moves because we can see all the movements as our direct and infered experiences. However, if That is defined as that which IS everything, where can it move to ? If it moves at all, all it means is that we misunderstood its expansiveness as only that much, it is really as expansive as where we think it moved to. Something can move only to a place where it is not at the start before it moved. That cannot move because there is no place where That is not. I have typed this out as an exercise to test my own understanding and inviting corrections, for which I would be grateful... Namaste !

Do u guys really TRUST yourself that u can get spiritual growth via gnaana yoga (path of knowledge) of AV, without any meditations (dhyaana yoga)❓ To me, AV is gr8 to understand relation between C & mind & brain & body & memory & prana & so on, i.e. theoretical understanding about spirituality, but it doesn't seem to provide any meditation methods that can be put to practice... I mean that can be really put into practice like buddha's aanaa-paanaa and vipassana. COMMENTS❓
