vedanta.org In this series of talks, Swami Sarvapriyananda lucidly unfolds the path to direct "Self-Realization" presented by Adi Shankaracharya in Aparokshanubhuti. This talk - delivered on September 22, 2016 at the Vedanta Temple in Hollywood, CA - covers verse 25 in "Aparokshanubhuti (Self-Realization)". The text for this series is a translation of Adi Shankaracharya's Aparokshanubhuti by Swami Vimuktananda. See our Facebook page for a .pdf of a Roman transliteration of the text.

Pranam Swamiji. Life without knowledge of Sanskrit is incomplete. This short coming is overcome to a large extent by listening to your lectures in general and Drg Drishya Vivek and now Aparoksha Anubhuti in particular. Thank you very much Swamiji as well as the Vedanta Society of Southern California for making these talks available to people like me. Jai Sri Rama Krishna.

Swamiji Pronam. I have very carefully listened to all your talks on drig drishya viveka, Aparokshanubhuti and a few talks at IITK . What I could comprehend and glean is, our Real Identity is Pure Conscientiousness, and our Body conscientiousness is due to the Reflected Conscientiousness on the Mind, of The Real Consciousnesses or Atman. That means that Atman is real (Sat Chit Aanand ) and the Consciousness on the mind is the Image of the Atman or a Borrowed Consciousness . Again you said when some one dies, the Atman does not die. The Body and Mind being Objects Die and perish and the Borrowed or Reflected Consciousness transcends to a New Body and New Mind. The Pure Consciousness ( the Existence, Consciousness and Bliss) being immortal probably goes to it's Own Destination, the Presumably to ShantiDham The Biggest "Existence and Consciousness" . But my confusion is how "an Image" or "a Borrowed Consciousness", "an object" "an Illusion" can Transcend or even exist without the Pure Consciousness the "Subject" , "the Witness", "the Source of the Image". An image can not exist without the Mind (the reflecting surface) and the Subject, the Looker or the Know-er the Witness The Pure Consciousness as you always describe. However I believe in reincarnation and can prove it Scientifically. I believe a Human body is probably the most ancient entity. My Wild Guess or Blind Assumption is , when the Body dies Mind also Dies. Pure Consciousness Transcends to it's own Destination and waits for the it's own Birth - Death -Cycle if not emancipated. A New Born comes with it's Physical Body , Borrowed half cell( with Billions of genes from their Ancestral Parents as legacy) from each parents and the Mother Nature. It comes with a new Mind and also a Pure Consciousness. Then it develops or being Superimposed it's Mind with Chit (Existance) Auhang( identity), Buddhi( Intellect) and Manas (Memory). Swamiji if you can kindly through some light on it to put me in the right Track please. My email address is mobashiabm@gmail.com FB ID is Mobashi Abm Thanks and Namaste,

Pranams to swami. You may call it apathy. The fact is that am tied up with you tube to be able to listen to your series of lectures. It also requires intense listening. Be casual for a moment;the link is lost, that is continuity. So grateful for the uploads. It may be 'downloaded'to us slowly but surely.

LEC 8 : VERSE 25 : “I am the source of that which is reflected off the mind” I have disease in the body or in the mind. I am beyond this change in the form of decay. The body doesn’t decay because our life forces are constantly fighting a war - we are however not aware of this constant change. Mental decay in the form of depression and agony. There’s no reason to kill myself even though it may seem imperative at a particular point of time. There is something aware of this decay - more aware of the body of times of physical illnesses and more of the mind when it is mentally not fine. Every change-we are aware of it. The fact that we know something makes it us the knower of the pain. “Clouds in the sky doesn’t belong to the sky.” Every time we talk about the form, we experience it. But we don’t experience the form of the consciousness. Only are you aware of the form when you are separate from it, when you are the knower of the form. Q: But how do we accept that God is both of a form and formless? A: Take the example of water - it assumes the form of whatever it is placed in - the form belongs to the medium. Water by itself has no form but manifests into a form - appears in a form. But what is key to know is that even water from a lake that is solidified into an iceberg REMAINS THE SAME WATER. Imagine a movie - you identify with the characters in the movie and experience the sadness, joy, surprise etc in the movie but you also realize that you are not in the movie but rather just watching the movie. When you identified with the movie , it is SAMSARA. When you are comfortable and realize that none of that is true, and REALIZE THAT YOU ARE THE WITNESS OF THE MOVIE, you are in bliss. Nirvana Brahman is the space ,without existing, where the theatre is imagined. Nature-Movie. Souls-Witnesses of Movie. Underneath all of that is one Reality - if real, it is Saguna Brahman. Beyond all of that, that luminous space is Nirvana Brahman. Sinner = Good Person in terms of Consciousness but however, people do good things so that the consequences they face in the waking world derails them less from the witness perspective (my own interpretation, this’d apply for any non-enlightened person). Morality and Karma will still plays it’s role and consequences of one’s actions would still be felt. Difference between detachment and apathy : Reality : You are pure consciousness. The mistake of the snake is in no way attached or related to the rope. The screen on which the movie is played is not related/indifferent to the movie played on it. Asanga - Things comes and go. We are already unattached. Which feeling, which sensation, which body, what have ever been able to hold on to? The screen (Consciousness) alone enables the movie( Nature) to be played. Apathy :“I am meditating. Don’t disturb me. Advainta is not against action. It is not the act of disengaging from action. This is apathy. What is necessary is complete serenity in the midst of intense activity.

☆ If only we know ourselves as we truly are, then all our problems would be solved. It's the ignorance which causes all the problems. ☆ If the root cause is ignorance then solution only is knowledge. ☆ Consciousness is not in the body but it's " aware of the body". When in dreams, consciousness is not aware of physical body but the mental reality. ☆ Ramayan Act...Mother earth open up 😂😂😂😂

Pranam Swamiji, for enlighting us through your marvellous lectures. We are extremely fortunate to hear this from far away countries. I have a question related to 8th lecture. If you kindly explain a little bit at the end of 9th lecture, it would be very beneficial. If everything is in our mind which is in consciousness, how do we explain objective reality? For example when we see the sun and feel the heat isn’t it appears same to everybody? When every mind sees or feels same to certain thing how it can be explained by reduction from ‘Mahakasha’ to ‘Chidakasha’ ? Is not it in ‘mahakasha’? If we say that this ‘mahakasha’ itself is in consciousness then indirectly we agree the presence of things outside of us bodily, though everything appears in consciousness. May be I am not able to frame the question very clearly. Thank you Swamiji.

I think what he wants to convey is that the objects are present outside our body by projecting power of Maya and, that is how we are able to see it using our eyes. But that light bouncing off of the object is travelling via your eyes into the brains and is illuminated by our consciousness. Think of consciousness as electricity that powers the mind to see, touch, smell etc. And all objects adhere to their own dharma, so the Sun's dharma is to expel heat and light among many other wonderful things it does, which is experienced by all individuals the same way, but what illumines this experience is consciousness itself. I hope this helps.

Thank you Swamiji. And thank you for all these series' which enables us to actually 'attend' these classes. I have a question that i have not been able to find an answer to yet feel in my experience is: Can this knowledge and understanding lead to pride? We often hear about our saints becoming full of pride and thus leading onto ignorance? I have felt this feeling while dealing with people. How to make sure we don't fall for that ignorance too? I would be really grateful if someone can shed some light on this. Thank you!!

humility might be remembered when you remember all is brahman...then even the 'other' against whom you feel pride, that 'other' is simply a positionality in your mind, while its true source is brahman, as is yours. also, another might be ignorant, but i remain ignorant on my own levels, so humility is the result. and, perhaps, remembering simply i am ultimately not this body, this personality, this positionality, therefore how can i take pride in any of this? i am the vast. the feeling of grandeur, of bliss peace associated with the vast, is its nature, so that is not the same as pride. i hope that makes sense.
