I know this is old, but I was wondering what Headset you have. You mention VIVE a few times. A friend dumped a VIVE Focus Plus on me, before moving, but this thing does not seem to want to connect to anything outside it's game store. The New Oculus needs to be logged into Facebook. Is there a decent headset that does not need a subscription to some service, or facebook, to work?
@davidykay3 жыл бұрын
There is an ability to sideload applications to both the VIVE Focus Plus and the Oculus Quest. Quest also has a mode where it can be "slaved" to a pc. This is called Oculus Link. VIVE Focus Plus may also have this feature. Not sure. That said, if you are big on software freedom, you may prefer to buy a pc-oriented headset, as then your pc will be running all the software and you are free to do whatever you wish. Examples of this include the original Vive, Valve Index, and others. Let me know if you haven further questions.

hey David, I need your sincere feedback about my case. I am solo developer and and computer vision engineer. Would like to dive into VR/AR and did not choose which way I need to go: Unreal engine or Unity3d? Many people say that UE is for big studios and. Unity is good for mobile side.. What do you think about that? Do you think that something will change soon? If you were me, which side would you focus on? Any reply would be appreciated!
@davidykay3 жыл бұрын
Kamil, my recommendation is to build a very simple project in both and see which one you prefer. Both have different pros and cons and will usually "grab" different people for different reasons. The biggest thing going for Unity, in my opinion, is the size of the development community. You've got plenty of assets on the Marketplace, open-source code, etc. Unreal feels like more of a "professional" tool for me. I like the editor much more. Working with materials and animations is very intuitive. Blueprints are great. VR editor is pretty handy. The hot-reload trick they have for C++ is pretty good, but the compile times are pretty awful. SkookumScript makes Unreal WAY more useful, and I hear that the new Verse language is going to be excellent, but I haven't tried it or closely evaluated it yet. My other big complaint about Unreal is that the editor is slow to restart if it ever crashes. I agree with the generalization that Unreal is better for a big team and that Unity is better for mobile, but, ultimately, both are powerful tools that can get the job done. This might be a horrible comparison, but have you ever programmed on iOS vs Android? Or, hell, Linux Desktop vs Windows Desktop? I think what you'll find is that in each case, both toolchains are perfectly capable of getting you to a high-level outcome, but you are going to want to find the one that better matches your mindset and workflow better. My experience was to start with Unity, then to move to Unreal, and I'm currently working on a new engine with a few colleagues. We are hardcore programmers and didn't like all of the ceremony around the edit-compile-run loop. I think Jonathan Blow is of a similar inclination, hence his work on JAI and insisting on building his own engines. Anyway, in summary: don't pick something based on how employable you will be afterwards. Pick something that is fun/productive to use and well-documented. You'll be rewarded for building cool stuff. My personality preferred the more anal-retentive design of Unreal, but there are many others who prefer Unity. Here's another way of looking at it: Unreal can probably get you in the ballpark with Blueprints, but you will need SkookumScript and/or C++ to get all the way there. Unity is designed to be highly C#-oriented, so if you like C#, go to town! Here's one more crazy idea: if you like Java, consider jMonkeyEngine. If you like Clojure, there is some support both on Unity and jMonkeyEngine. I don't know what your goals are. Do you want to build an AAA title? You probably won't be able to do it as one guy. Are you looking to incorporate your computer vision work into your VR work? You might want to look into the workflow around linking to native code. All of the major engines have some provision for it, but my understanding is that Unreal is the easiest (although I believe it does require you to run a forked version of the editor). Do you want to build a small indie title? Pick the one that makes you most motivated to spend hours and hours and hours developing mastery and working on your baby. "Find what you love and let it kill you." Good luck.

@@davidykay You can't believe how I am thankful for this detailed message you wrote for me. You are incredibly good man. What I want to do is to combine my CV models into VR/AR in the future. @davidykay6 жыл бұрын
I haven't done this myself, but licensed PS4 developers have the ability to push their game files over the network into the PS4 from the PC. I don't know how integrated the UE4 editor is into this workflow: it's possible that it may not be a one-button deploy, but there definitely is a workflow to make your content in UE4, build, deploy to PS4, and then wear the PSVR headset to test. My understanding is that using Vive/Oculus as your testbed is still faster, so you do would do most of your dev on the PC and then push your game to the PS4 when you're focusing on checking how it runs on that hardware. Hope this helps.

Hey there! Depends what your input mechanism is. If you use 6DOF motion controllers, your choices are HTC Vive (currently $499) vs Oculus Rift + Touch (currently $399). If you are planning to use a gamepad, that really opens things up to low-end, Android-based headsets, for example the $199 Oculus Go. One thing to keep in mind is that the development cycle will be tighter if your headset plugs into your PC (disqualifying Oculus Go, Gear VR, or Google Daydream). Is it possible to make a VR game like this for android (Using Google Cardboard)? If it is, are there any limitations making a VR game for android?
@davidykay5 жыл бұрын
Yes and yes. The biggest limitations will be: 1. Input. Cardboard has very simple input mechanisms by default (limited to just gaze and one button, if I recall correctly). You can add gamepad support, but not all players will have one. 2. Graphical performance. Android devices are much more limited than desktop, so you'll need to render a less complex scene, accordingly. I've heard estimates that mobile devices are about 50x weaker than desktops when it comes to VR rendering performance. Hope this helps.

Can I do a VR game and test it without having a VR gear? (on the keyboard and monitor)
@davidykay5 жыл бұрын
Theoretically yes, but when you add a headset and a motion controller, you will likely want to re-design a lot! My advice is: if you're really charged up right now, you may want to capture that enthusiasm and start prototyping ASAP. You'll learn a lot about the tools and about what you want to make. The only hurdle is that you'll have to acknowledge that you'll have to throw some work away when your headset arrives and if you move to motion controller input. One other idea: you could design for asymmetric play. Some games are designed for one player using the keyboard and mouse, the other player using headset and motion controllers. Perhaps you could do the same?

David Kay Actually I could use some help if you had some link explaining or anything; I participate in a project in my school lab for Visual Computing and we have a couple of Oculus Rift, however I don't have one myself, so being able to develop from home and debugging would help a lot!

can we VR preview without having VR HEADSET CONNECTED

I don't believe so. Are you hoping to do some VR dev, for example using the motion controllers, by using your monitor?

Can I include VR in my game without having VR goggles?
@davidykay6 жыл бұрын
You can, but in order to do a good job on designing and supporting the feature, I strongly recommend that you get a set of goggles to test it out. Can a chef cook a good dish without tasting it? Yes, but it's much harder!

Can you show the whole body of the player and not just the hands ?!
@davidykay5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can, but we'd need to to do a separate tutorial on this. Are you referring to looking down and seeing "chest?"
