Yes!!!! They were always the goofiest and played pranks! 1986, senior year of high school, my social studies teacher was loved by all the students. His lectures were very good and people actually paid attention. With the exception of one day. Our teacher was in the middle of a lecture. All of a sudden he began to slow down his rate of speech and his voice got softer and softer. He put his index finger up to his lips to motion. "Shhhhhh." He then pointed at a classmate, Scott. Scott was a well-liked classmate; a classmate who had his head on his desk and was in a deep sleep. We were all silent. Our teacher went to the board and wrote, "slowly and silently, get up and leave the classroom so as not to wake Scott. We will hold the rest of the class in the common area." This common space was an area where a couple of hallways met and the teachers had their offices. Each classroom had a big window next to it. Class resumed and we could see Scott, still sleeping. A minute before the bell rang our teacher had the entire class gather at the window and look in at Scott. When the bell rang, he was startled and bolted up fron his seat. For a few moments he was a little confused as to why he was in an empty classroom, but when he looked up and saw the entire class in the window smiling, laughing and giving him a thumbs up, he laughed. Good times. 👍😂

As far as real hugs (pre-Covid), I would never initiate a hug from a student. This is up to the student. Also, when it comes to the crazy classroom stuff, I have NEVER had a student say that they didn't want to participate. I would have individual printouts of the work ready, but no one has ever chosen that.

I had an extrovert precalc teacher once. She always tried to make learning "fun" with colorful posters, games, videos. I ended up failing half the tests because these "fun" methods of teaching were honestly just distracting. Next year I had an introverted calc teacher. No funny business. You walk in, listen to him lecture for an hour, then he would give you a packet with like 100 practice questions to do for the unit. I ended up acing the class. I guess the moral is there is no one size fits all style of teaching/learning and trying to make certain subjects fun for the student is not always better.
@ConnanTheCivilized3 жыл бұрын
I agree, though making learning encouraging and attractive to students is important. It just shouldn’t be what the teacher spends most of class time doing. Especially the rare teachers with charisma, they should teach, not tell stories. Students can supplement this with fun movies, websites, and KZbin channels like Kurzgesagt - In A Nutshell on their own time. We don’t need a teacher for that.
@ConnanTheCivilized3 жыл бұрын
Having trouble in pre-calc isn’t so bad. My pre-algebra teacher couldn’t do the math at the level of 12 year olds. She was the sweetest lady, but when asked for help she would have us play computer games instead. I had Algebra 1 in eighth grade and boy was it a shock. I hated the teacher for having high standards and criticizing my work, but I know I would not have gotten such a high grade if I hadn’t learned to ask questions and get tutoring when needed. I had a few subjects that went from silly with low standards to expecting too much for even a hard working student to keep up. The important part regardless of teaching style is that the student(s) actually learn something.
@ConnanTheCivilized3 жыл бұрын
That’s also true about education styles. I used to think that writing was my weak point (It definitely was in elementary school.) I even had a diagnosed disability related to it. Yet in high school, SATs, a scholarship, and college writing was my strength. I used to be weak in visual learning, later I became very good at it. There is no perfect way to teach.

Wow. As an accounting major and have to do some math work, I would thrive better that way also. Just put me on a system and let me figure it out and then during lecture I would not have to be that interactive. Unfortunately, the last teacher actually told me to get some rest because I did not respond that much, and I was the only one who showed up to her lectures. I was thinking that she should have been lucky I showed up! The Excel teacher I have is very interactive that I'm thinking about skipping the live lectures and listen to the recorded ones. The extroverted teacher reminded me of my astronomy professor. He was such a lovely, old man. I felt really bad because I was in his class when the pandemic started and when he started out zoom calls, he seemed so sad. ): He was divorced and his kids were all grown up so he lived alone. He would almost beg people to turn on their cameras because he felt so lonely, saying how he was so unused to being home (he was a semi workaholic and was really involved with the schools he taught at). ): I hope he's okay. He was so kind. Talked about inclusivity and said f u to the racist. 😔😔 I wish he were my uncle or something.

I am really an introvert, but as a teacher I am also a combination of both depending on how much my energy levels are depleated. Think the energy should just be dispensated more optimally so the kids don't start to think their teacher has a split personality. :D

I'm an introvert and a teacher, and while I see how "faking" extroversion can be helpful (and I find myself doing this at times), I find I enjoy my job more when I let myself be myself. I think it's okay for an introverted teacher to act introverted and practice using his/her strengths instead. I encourage you, if you are an introverted teacher, to let yourself be such because it's not a weakness, and it can save you from the extra stress/anxiety that comes with forcing oneself to be an extrovert in the classroom. 🙂

Great advice. Working in customer service with the public can take a lot out of an introvert. I finally felt comfortable a few years ago and assist customers my way. You can be quiet but still helpful and effective and some people can tell a fake from a mile away anyway. I had to assist with taxes and most people wanted to get to the point anyway without the unnecessary small talk.
@katherinewilson1853 Жыл бұрын
I learned how to be more patient and genuine through customer service though. And I am REALLY introverted. I just gave myself over to being genuinely concerned about each person, in the interaction, and asked them. It was truly healing for me. It also made me one of the most popular employees in an enormous city, which I'd never been before. It truly was a life-changing experience. So it was being myself--helpful, but I had to be chatty, patient, and I brought sincerity and authenticity to the interactions I had to have.

I was that extroverted teacher at times before I left the profession, and I’m sorry. But I got some introverts out of their shell and think it was positive for them in the long run. Plus they got to laugh at me, which was always a good time. There’s being shy, and then there’s being afraid. I could tell the difference and did not make the “afraid” kids do anything they weren’t ok with doing. Sadly some teachers don’t realize the difference.

Introvert and shy is not the same thing. Introvert just means you draw your energy from your alone time. The number of smirks that went around the room from "that girl being shut" told me that they were sick of the extraverted braggart student and wanted to actually work. Never ran out of material. Interesting thing was, as an extrovert they did all the talking business and I felt comfortable with listening to them.

The thing is sometimes they randomly pick someone to do something and that someone is usually you, Ex. today I had to do something twice on the blackboard

One is wasting everyone's time (while thinking that he is being entertaining), and the other one is actually Teaching.

both of them are unnecessarily complicating things, just different things and in different ways
@ConnanTheCivilized3 жыл бұрын
Both of them are wasting time and being poor examples for their students. I say this because they are both acting out a part instead of getting down to teaching. The introvert is abusing their position to babysit and the “extrovert” is trying to fake confidence by engaging the class in icebreakers. Neither one of those will actually help the students, they are just busy work to make the teacher feel effective.

No disrespect to teachers in general. They tend to be amazing people.

I hate the douche extroverted teachers who try to make their students feel stupid for a joke, or make the Introverted kids 'change' by force as if being quiet is a crime.

When I was a teacher in middel school I had a deal with my students from week to week, I know all of them love to play football, so I say “If you want to play in my class tomorrow, be so active with me today” and they become crazy to do it! I mean they turn out very active! Sometimes I play with them 🥲♥️

My dad's second father was a teacher in a poor neighborhood with gangs and drugs. He would always carry a book with him and dared the students to catch him without a book to get a free recess. He also would give them a choice- 30 minutes of reading or 30 minutes of math homework. He was a sweet smart man who knew how to connect with his students.

Introvert teachers are the best. Me, also being an introvert, really enjoys the quiet. Though now that I’m outside of school and don’t have to go back to such a hellhole, I can continue to enjoy the quiet from time to time.

I always had the best grades in classes where the teacher was an introvert. They were very articulate and stayed on task. I feel like my extroverted teachers spent so much time going off topic and talking about their trip to Italy, that they didn't even get around to teaching us anything.

I agree, me too.. great point. They would spend too much time on making it "fun" and I do understand why.. but as an istj..I didn't need or like all that. I was more like "just get to the point of today's lesson"..😆 I definitely couldn't stand the.." everyone lets go around the room, introduce and tell us a little about your self" crap..lol. I was more like, I'm here to learn the lesson.. not about everybody else's personal lives... what's that have to do with Algebra..😆

My history teacher back in high school was so bad about veering off subject that students would start intentionally instigating him to get off topic by asking questions about him, and next thing we know it's the end of the class and no one learned anything except that he's been on a lot of wacky adventures. The kids would then high five each other after class for successfully avoiding taking notes that day. He was a really nice guy but not that great of a teacher, as I don't think I learned anything about history that year other than what we learned from the "super historically accurate" 300 movie he let us watch. I bounded with him over music when he saw a band shirt I was wearing and let him copy a cd I had of the band's new album he hadn't heard yet. He then later sent me a bunch of mix tapes I never listened to as a thanks. Damn, I wonder what happened to that guy.

i got an introverted teacher this semester (online bc corona) and he is a god sent for us introverted students! he doesn't require us to turn on our cameras, he doesn't call on random, he gives a few minutes break every 20 minutes, he doesn't make us do presentations, and as a bonus, he usually uses movie characters/clips to help us understand his lessons (he's a history teacher). best. teacher. ever.
