Aaron lived just a few miles down the road from me we're from the exact same city in odenville Alabama I live right down the road from him and Scott Canterbury and one day we were on our home lake which is Logan Martin and I saw Aaron out in the middle of the lake fishing across the point and so idled up about 10 boat links behind him and set my trolling motor down and trolled up to him and just asked him just as quickly and nonchalant as I possibly could without making it seem like I was trying to affect his fishing which I was absolutely not doing cuz I knew him off the water so I didn't have to approach him on the water, and I just said hey man what are they biting and I promise you right now right hand straight in the air that that man literally told me "If you got a 1/8oz scrounger head and the tiniest fluke or swimbait you got, they'll nail it"... I said thank you bud, I pick my trolling motor up and got out of his area went down the river a little ... hit a couple of points, didn't get bit on the first point, But on the next one and the next one and a couple secondary things I could not keep them out of my boat!! I'll never forget that day and that was about 8 years ago.. it's crazy to see you make this video knowing that I had that experience with him and him telling me to do this exact same set up. So that's one of the things I always have rigged up during the winter time especially when we have our weekend derbies on Logan Martin, of course everybody and their mama is out there throwing an Alabama rig but if I can find a point with a few fish off the end of it I will fire that scrounger head with a little bitty fluke or swim bait on it and get bit every time!! especially when you see the PODS of bait around you are the EXACT same size that you're throwing!! it's an amazing sight to see literally almost cast after cast after cast.. he will be dearly missed by so many people in this world, the man was an inspiration to many and could brighten your day with just the fewest amount of words, or just by acknowledging you or shaking your hand or saying "hey man stay safe, this is what I caught them..on y'all go have fun!!".. he was always that way every time I saw him!! I have another story when I seen him at the bait shop right off the water and he happened to walk in while I was in there paying for something and I saw his process of standing there with one arm across his chest and one hand under his chin looking at two different baits that look identical to me but to him he could see the subtle differences.. he was just an amazing person!!!! And LOVED FISHING AND TALKING FISHING!! THAT'S really all you can say about Aaron Marten!!! RIP a real legend that will be dearly missed by many!!

Dude was a wealth of information, he had a method of tying line on a spool to keep it from coming loose I wish I could figure out. Top notch guy

My wife and I met Aaron at the 2019 Bassmaster Classic. She and Aaron are all about health. They talked like old friends. Aaron is missed in our family...

My experience with Aaron was when he showed me how to take a regular size fluke and use a razor blade to carve off the sides and belly. Somewhere in my tons of baits is that scrounged.

My heart goes out to Aaron's family and friends, that's rough. I'm gonna try this on a 30 acre lake I fish alot. It's pretty clear this year (3' or more visibility) but it's got alot of Florida bass, some are double digit. We've mostly caught em on wacky trick worms but this looks pretty dang natural. I'm definitely gonna try it. Thanks alot Randy!

That's real interesting about the 1/8 oz size, I will have to try it. I caught my PB on a 1/4 oz scrounger and a pearl 4 inch fluke on Lake Norfork in Arkansas, post spawn 6+ lbs, reeling it just below the surface.

The quarter ounce head with a super fluke has saved the day for me several times.

I first tried making a bill out of a jig head by squeezing a lead head at the bottom with a Vice but at the bottom of the head it wouldn’t give it no shake

I met Amart years ago....talk about a genuine guy....he was that. My favorite Amart story was the bird deal on Havasu I think it was... absolute gold 😂. Wondering if you miss a lot of fish on that bait...looks like the lip keeps the hook point obstructed just a bit

Thanks for the tip. I've used larger scroungers (mostly on Lake Hartwell actually) with pretty much no success. I'll have to give them another try with downsized versions.

Randy - how about your thoughts on tackle box rust issues?
@matthewburcicki94522 жыл бұрын
If your referring to your hooks rusting? What I've done is go to a pharmacy and ask them if you can have some of the moisture cans that come in the pill bottles. It wicks the moisture away from the pills. The pharmacy just tosses them in the garbage. I put em in with anything that has hooks to prevent them from rusting.

I have been using them in upper water column, but the tail of the paddle tails gets bitten off. Can not tell if bass or cichlid.

Do they come with that bill or do u have to add that to the head?
@weshunter17962 жыл бұрын
For the scroungers I've bought, the bill is built into the jig head. Not sure if you can get the bills separately to add to jigs or not. From what Randy showed, looks like maybe you can get some that you can at least remove the bills from.

Not true. That bait is great in the water column especially with schooling fish or fishing forward facing sonar. You can fish it very similiar to a chatterbait.
@bhmsupra2 жыл бұрын
I hate how the lip color changes and also loses it's shape. After those two things inevitably happen, they don't look right and they don't run right. I have gone to the willow vibe to take the place of the scrounger and never looked back. You'd think that the bait companies could figure out how to be better here.

The whole angling world is finally waking up to something that Aaron and I knew decades ago: DOWNSIZING is an extremely overlooked and underutilized angling philosophy. The days of 6/0 worm hooks and 30lb test are long gone. Good riddance! The vast majority of the bass we catch are 14" and under; give them a chance! It is a mathematical certainty that, if you downsize your lure, you are mathematically increasing your odds for success because the smaller your bait is, the greater the number of fish that can fit that bait in their mouth is! Even the largest bass occasionally eat the tiniest meals. There are times when bass will attack almost anything; but increasingly these days (and most times), downsizing works in your favor! PS. The tiny fluke sucks! Don't try it! 🤫🤫🤫

Scroungers are not uniform, and thus, not uniform in swim.
