Like Heineken... Probably the best explanation of the slice BH I've ever heard/seen! No nonsense, no bla bla bla and show up as well. Every word right to the point. Doesn't iritate therefore. Couple of the absolute novelties for me: - racket closer to the body, for once it's too far ahead it'll naturally open up producing situps 👍; - the specific follow through (feel + control); - it should be learnt as the most complicated shot once flat and topspin are all right. The folks tend thinking it's the simplest one for it's defensive shot. Therefore not satisfied for it's not properly executed. Who would be satisfied with "top spin forhand" resulting just in situps? The same with the slice BH. No pace and agonizingly high "slice BH" equals missing the point and the cause of the frustration with this shot. Hence lesser attention to it. Self-defeating development while here it's shown that it might be a weapon (esp as a shot prior advancing the net). Even the ATP tennis players nowdays are performing this shot as well as volleys, not that assertively compared to "old good times" of the serve and volley tennis. The only question mark of mine is: the wrist should be relaxed and moveable just in case to handle the law balls? No comments from my side. Will just try it to get the fill. Just a general doubt... could you comment? Good luck and thank you for your great job! 👍😊

Omar, thank you. Yes there can be wrist movements on the slice according a player’s intention and the incoming ball.

Another great explanation. Breaking down the backhand slice. I'm trying to master the movement while hitting the ball with pace. Need to keep practicing. It'll come.

Racket face must be more closed, and the contact is closer to the body in the forward-backward axis 3:07 This is very clear in pros' performance but I never knew it before. Thanks a lot!

Following this instruction, my slice shot has more pace and cross the net with little clearance. It is more offensive than my slice prior. I use both depending on the incoming ball.

Big fan of your channel, Nick. I love your approach to teaching. Thank you for putting so much high quality instruction up! After watching a replay of the Nadal Del Potro quarterfinal at Wimbledon 2018, I was struck by how effectively Nadal used drop shots in the match. Do you have plans for a video on drop shots?

Great points on the fundamentals, all of it spot on! I was always confused by the word slice as a junior and no longer use it when I am coaching for the backhand unless I am talking about underslice on the drop shot. I am curious what you think about the terminology. I consider ‘slice’ as any ball hit thinly on the side of the ball to spin it like a top and affect a curl through the air (slice serves for example). BACK-spin is what we see most commonly used in match play where a player squarely hits the BACK of ball to affect a backward spinning deep neutralizing shot from a defensive posture. I think this is what you we’re so effectively showing in this video. I will usually point out that a ball bouncing to the player will almost always have top spin into the racquet and therefore only need to be ‘maintained ‘ rather than ‘created ‘ when you change the direction of its path. UNDER-spin can be similar to backspin in preparation but is struck more thinly UNDER the ball for a softer impact, higher trajectory, more spin, and shorter target like a drop shot. Under-slice is the same as above but struck further out front to impart a lateral spin making the ball change direction on the bounce. I prefer to use these metrics to introduce spin skill to novice players because it is ball oriented and simpler to understand for those that get confused by conformist based instruction. On this theme I see many other misconceptions in tennis like the overhead ‘smash’, ‘rushing’ the net, and power = speed. I may have opened up some rabbit holes here, so apologies if that muddied the waters, so to speak!

Great info! Nick,what kind of strings and at what tension are you using?
@IntuitiveTennis
@IntuitiveTennis 5 жыл бұрын
tystom77, I played with Polystar Original 17G for 20 years (Schüttler, Davydenko used it). However, ever since I switched to Babolat that string does not work anymore. I am currently still testing strings and use Gosen Polylon. I don’t like co-polymers and only play with monofilament polyester. Tension is between 40-44 lbs.

@@IntuitiveTennis Thanks a lot for your reply. I'm a beginner and I bought the Pure Drive and Pure Drive Tour stick with RPM Blast 1,25 mm at 57 lbs. Now I know: -> stiff racquet, stiff strings and stiff tension. I will change to Yonex Poly Tour Pro strings at ca. 51 lbs and it should be better with my arm problems.

Is it a really bad idea to try and hit the backhand slice with an eastern backhand grip? I use that grip for my one-handed backhand, and I find it easier to use the same grip for topspin and slice, to keep things simple.
@IntuitiveTennis
@IntuitiveTennis 4 жыл бұрын
It’s disadvantageous to slice with eastern backhand because it naturally closes the racquet face more and you are most likely compensating for that by turning your wrist
@robertorolfo
@robertorolfo 4 жыл бұрын
@@IntuitiveTennis I understand. Part of the reason I was doing it was because my slices were always floating very high (my racquet face was too open), but after watching your video I realize that it's because I was hitting the ball too far in front of me. Now I'll try a continental grip and to hit further back, more level with my body. Your tips are excellent!

I don't get the slice. Racket face is vertical at the begining, at acceleration is horizontal, at contact again vertical, horizontal on finish. Such a mysterious shot.
@IntuitiveTennis
@IntuitiveTennis 5 жыл бұрын
Kazzzzzo, yeah it can be very confusing. I teach my students to feel the slice by going around the ball in a scooping action. What happens is reality is sometimes a little different. The racquet has to go to the right after contact. BTW it is possible to get some cut on the ball by slightly opening the racquet face at contact. That’s why I advocate trying a backhand grip when slicing.
