mate, thanks...I am currently coaching my wife, who is a beginner. She's talented like Anna and these lessons are SO helpful. Great teaching job and great tips you've explained in this video. Backhand slice is one of my favourite weapons in tennis. I needed that soooo much thank you. Very helpful tutorial. The explanation is on point. Whenever I play against a strong forehand player which is also my style they usually hit on my backhand so I often need to slow down their play by slicing. But since they go for my weakpoint I cant really do much except return those shots till Im the one who serves. I know there are other ways to slow down the play but this is the best. Thank you sooooooooo much
@thomasmedeiros57223 жыл бұрын
Just because you serve this will not necessarily mean that the returner will not attack you backhand. Especially if you can’t direct your serve to their weakness. Also remember you are only as good as your second serve. Best to practice and improve all the basic strokes by hitting with a practice partner instead of always warming up for 10 minutes then playing sets. Practice the way you want to play is what I tell my High School teacher players .
@Mirosuperhero3 жыл бұрын
@@thomasmedeiros5722 Tysm for the tips. I started playing tennis 1 year ago because I hated the your loss our win style in football. And all the players and coaches were so biased. You need to be a naturally gifted hero who is very selfish to win and get the coach's attention. But in tennis, you can only blame yourself for your mistakes. And there is no need to carry the weight of your team's criticism or losses. I usually practice on a tennis wall because my academy's system is random. Like one day you play ones all the time. And another you would practice only serves. You get the idea. So all that info is very good and i could use all the help I could get. Im currently an intermediate in tennis and Im planning to go pro one day. Wish me luck :)
@Mirosuperhero3 жыл бұрын
@@thomasmedeiros5722 Also I like variety in shots kinda like Federer and it is totally unpredictable. But once they find out that I cant slow the play with my backhand they will use it to their advantage. I can direct the ball as you said but if someone is a hard hitter it won't matter which side the ball goes to. And Im honestly working on improving overall so drop shots are out of the question.

If you are a one handed backhand driver then: 1. Is there a difference in the take back or the take back loop? I am assuming there is none and I am moving to an eastern grip as I am taking back even if I am going to go back to continental later? Is this for the sake of camouflaging or it is it the way it’s meant to be? 2. When do I decide that it’s going to be slice and not a drive? 3. When do I move back to a continental grip?

Most people don't consider their body orientation when it comes to the slice....I always show my students the change in the racket angle when you have your weight shifting forward vs backwards, You can hit a slice with a fully perpendicular racket angle when having your weight shifting forwards, vs almost a 45 degree tilt when it's shifted more on your back foot. This makes a ton of difference when hitting a consistent ball.

. Thanks for the video! have another approach in my lessons. I don’t talk about slice. I make the people play very short balls, very close to the net. I show the grip, I demonstrate the shot , no take back, playing very short balls with very few slice. Two students play together, if the ball is too long they have to stop the ball and begin again. After a while they do the same from the t-line. It’s all about control. If they manage this we add more take back, but still is all about playing slow, short balls. After a while they play slices from the base line. Focus on the right take back, the right finish, head should not move (“like Federer”). With the time they have to hit a target.

I have no problem hitting a slice if the ball comes with some pace. However, if I tried to drop feed and slice, I framed the shot. I just think that when the drop feed has no forward momentum, it's kinda hard to slice. This issue only happens on the backhand slice though, Idk
@scarfacen84593 жыл бұрын
at 1:25 I also have the same question as Anna. When would you use a backhand slice vs a normal backhand hit?
@vanshagarwal23623 жыл бұрын
A slice can be used to change the pace of a rally. It can be used when the ball is really low and you need to slice the ball to get under it. When approaching the net slice can be useful to keep the low and deep. And then of course, when you are on the run and the ball is a bit out of your reach then you slice ( assuming you have a two handed backhand).
@rds46293 жыл бұрын
Nice job. It's harder for a new player to hit slice from the baseline off a drop feed b/c you don't get to reflect pace back so it was good that you moved closer to the net. I lke the sidespin she was getting. I can only do it unintentionally :(

I have to disagree that slices and side spins are accidental at the recreational level lol. when I first started playing I was "self taught" and I literally did that on purpose because I was able to control the ball a lot more. I would always hit the ball way out due to not having good form so I always hit the ball too hard. Slices came naturally to me as a new player and always through my opponents off and they were 100% intentional lol.

Nice progression of steps in your lesson as usual. Like the way you emphasize the “ feel for the shot” and going slow. The elbow tip was great. My only suggestion would be to introduce the grip at the start. You don’t address the continental grip until 11.40 into the lesson. I think it’s important to establish most effective grip from the start especially for players who normally hit with 2 hands on Bh side and they may use the popular semi western grip on the forehand . Continental grip on serve, slice, volley and overhead.

I'm a tennis coach myself. This is the second video I watched and I have to disagree with a lot of things you said. 8:39 Roger actually extends his arm through impact. There are enough slow motion videos on KZbin. In the beginning she took the racket up. That's why she hits it with the bottom of the frame sometimes. She hits down too much which you can only do when the ball comes at you with a high velocity. Since the ball has literally no forward velocity the movement of the racket has to be more forward. It's not that complicated. 10:15 She intuitively does it correctly, but if you look closely she extends her elbow as well. 14:48 The funny thing is, that she actually intuitively knows what she has to do when you wanna play a low slice when you have a ball with no speed. The slower the ball the more you have to swing forward. You didn't even comment on what she said even though she was actually not incorrect, you just said "oh maybe we went to the baseline a little too early". 17:42 Good slice. She actually extended her arm through impact there.
