Brilliant slice tutorial. Most complete video on youtube on how to slice effectively! One note of caution for beginners though; if you try and replicate Federer's way of slicing, more often than not you'll end up with a moonball or an unconditional dropshot, try and learn the traditional way of slicing first.

This was VERY helpful, Master Simon ... I've never seen a lesson where you're being lobbed (cannot smash the ball / have to run back) and have to retrieve it. There are so many difficult / easy / magicals ways the pros show us - but what is the most effective / the most safe / the most aggressive way to handle the problem of running back behind a GOOD lob ... and win the point ?!

Great video. Your backhand video helped me find the feel of hitting forward and not over-rotate last week. And now this video solves my problem for slice. I'm always taught to freeze the arm and point at the target, which is very uncomfortable because the momentum of the racket wants to keep traveling forward and across the body. If I follow your swing pattern, the slice feels natural. Now I wonder whether you have a video that can help me with forehand volley. Backhand volley is natural, but forehand volley with that continental grip is so uncomfortable, I must be missing something.

you're welcome, Simon. I've seen most of them since u started. It's good to study the position on the court depending on the opponent's ball ( deep, low, high, near the net, going to volley, etc). And another interesting topic is how to volley properly. I sometimes fail cuz I find myself in the middle of the court and the ball passes me (lob) or through my sides. Thx a lot. Cheers

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Hi Simon, I'm a Coach in Brisbane. I enjoy your YT lessons and 'steal' a lot of your tuition ideas :D My coaching mantra is that once a person can hit a shot with some consistency then the way to really improve as a player rather than a person who can hit a tennis ball is to learn to do what to do with the ball, play & practice tactical tennis. Like to see some tactical lessons, ie Recovery Position, Approach Shot Placement (why approach down the line) Tactical placement of Serve/RoS etc etc & how to train tactically to 'Practice To Win'. Keep up the great work. Cheers Peter, Brisbane, Aus

@arl business I prefer 'natural' Grass or Syn Grass courts. Much easier on ankles, knees, feet, racquets & balls. I still compete in the ITF/TA Seniors Tournaments which are all on Syn Grass or clay. I train & Coach on hard court as Club Coops is all Plexi Pave Hard Court. The AO surface, Plexi Cushion, is not too bad as it has a slight cushion feel when you play walk/run on it.

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Can't agree more . Please clarify if I could us e slice for high balls in backhand ?
@LunarEclipsism13 жыл бұрын
@@BarathManohar yes, you can use a slice backhand on high balls, it just requires an adjustment of the contact point. Practice it by having your friend feed deep to your backhand with topspin to kick high. To your other point, if you are consistently hitting your standard groundstrokes slices short it could be an issue of not using a proper continental grip and making contact out in front. If you are cutting under the ball too much with an open racket face you'll hit the shot "thinly" instead of with enough pace to carry it deep. Try to remember that the high-to-low swingpath will generate plenty of backspin without you also needing to cut under the ball.

Been trying to change my slice to more cutting across Federer style. I find I need quite a late contact point to make it work. Had a good few sessions on the ball machine, results great when perfect strike but currently think consistency might be hard. Less predictable than the standard technique. Have you seen this when coaching.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial3 жыл бұрын
I always find the key for myself and my students is starting high enough, which allows you to cut downwards and across the body. A low starting position makes this slice impossible. Good luck with the improvements 👍 All the best Simon

Hello Simon! Greetings from the U.S. Thanks for the excellent slice instruction. A few times during this video, you mentioned that we need to hit the forehand as much as possible. Is this because the forehand is normally the better shot versus the backhand for most of us? Could you please elaborate? Also, do you and Alex plan to do a lesson concerning the mental aspects of the game? Have a wonderful day.

For the slice, am I supposed to maintain a firm grip on/through contact or am I supposed to have a loose grip? It sounds like the ideal slice is where I create tension with the left hand (and therefore creating potential acceleration) but once I release the racquet and swing, my right hand grip is still firm, right?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial3 жыл бұрын
There’s a perfect zone where you’re as loose as you can be whilst maintaining racket stability. That changes on each shot, some will require more grip pressure and others less. I hope that makes sense? Simon

Hi Simon, great video! One question: I've seen that in many of the shots, just before the racket starts to come down, the right hands goes down a little and the racket stays more horizontal for a moment. Is this made to increase the power of the slice? thanks!

Floating slices are a bit of a mystery ... I find there is a big difference between various racquets. With some, like the RF97, I get the slices perfect almost every time. With others, they often float. I can't seem to find the answer from the normal parameters like weight, balance, SW, string pattern etc.
