Hi there from Ireland. I've searched for They're proud of the Irish now for 20 years and I believe this may be one of the only recordings ever made. Id love to ask you a couple of questions if you don't mind

@Onkel_Greifenklau my grandfather was working in co. Kerry in the 1940s. His room mate taught him this song in the evenings. It was never written down. All just from memory. Over the years the song has been passed from generation to generation but we only had part of the song. It has huge sentimental value. I would love to be able to find all of the lyrics so it isn't lost. The recording is fantastic but I can't make out the first verse. Do you know them or where I can get them please?

@@antoinettecarter1275 Unfortunately I have no information about this record other than what I put un the description. (For some reason the comments feature is turned off for that record--I don't know why.) I will try to decipher the words, but as you know it is very hard to make them out. You (and I) might have a better chance if you try listening through headphones. I did a Google search, but I found nothing, although it is possible it could be listed under a variant of the title. If find out anything, or am able to transcribe the words from the recording, I will certainly let you know. UPDATE: archives.vwml.org/songs/RoudFS/S589277 says that there is a recording of it on Victor V-29077-A. That recording gives the title as “I’m Proud of the Irish Now” and gives the first line as “Guests had all assembled in a house of wealth and [ ? ], The . . .” I will keep looking.

@@antoinettecarter1275 You're very welcome. You might want to contact the Vaughn Williams Memorial Library in London (library@efdss.org), which is the source of the information I gave you. They seem to have the 1930 Victor recording I mentioned, and I am sure they would be able to help you. Here is a link to another entry about the song, this one with the same title as my record: archives.vwml.org/songs/RoudFS/S495063

These were not top rank singers back then. They would be now! Subtle singing!
