Germany too didn't exist till 1871. They were utterly devastated and destroyed in 1918. Yet they fought their way out of misery and made themselves a superpower. Nobody helped Germany. In fact, they were paying war reparations and fighting sky high inflation while rebuilding their nation

@Complex CR the HRE was very loosely held. Prussia was one part of it. The Prussians through their hardwork, discipline and tactics fought their way to weld together dozens of small units to make Germany in 1871. Before that, there was no such thing as Germany. For Poland, at least there was the strong Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth. The russian empire was a real empire, a superpower in its own, not a stepping stone. The Soviet Union won a civil war and took the superpower that existed for centuries. Do you really think it was a similar story?

Being a bit honest here, I kinda get emotional when I listen and watch stuff about Poland in the 2nd World War. They were absolutely screwed at their creation, interwar years, during the battle for Poland, they were blamed for allied failures after Poland’s fall and after all that their people face almost half a century of Soviet tyranny. I don’t have any connection to Poland, but I sympathize with it’s people and am inspired by its resilience.

@@Wes-g2l Unfortunetely, Britain was mostly in fault. French diplomacy and policies were fully dependent on British ones. It was Chamberlain who decided to leave Czechoslovakia and after the Munich Agreement the Allies lost their last opportunity to defeat Hitler. It became impossible when he gained an upper hand over Poland and reinforced his army with Czech equipment and gold. Before that, Czechoslovakians were able to put up an effective fight, protected by fortified mountains and quite strong army for such a small country. Germans, much weaker than in 1939, would have big troubles with Czechs only, having little fuel and ammunition reserves, not to mention the French and British on the west. Poland also ensured the Allies that even tough Poles quarreled with the Czechs, Poland would join the war becouse of Polish-French alliance. Hitler would have been crushed and it was Chamberlains decision whether to fight or try to avoid war for all cost.

Hrance and Foland have diametrically opposite government and economic models, hate each other and denounce each other publicly. Jermany is kinda stuck in between those two. One day, Hrance invades Jermany and pushes toward's Foland's borders. Jermany is collapsing like an incompetent house of cards. Now, what should Foland do? 1. Sit around with a thumb up its ass? OR. 2. Try to move Hrance's (mortal enemy, mind you) new borders as far away from its heartland as possible. Now, given that you are Polish, I can already deduce your answer as option one. I've always had a fascination with country of Poland, specifically it's history, and it never ceases to amaze me what feats the Poles were able to achieve in the face of overwhelming odds. I can't help but feel sad when I read about events like the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. The poles were willing to give their lives for even a slim chance of hope for freedom. Its a tragedy that after all their hard work and sacrifice the only change Poland would endure after the war was a change in the occupying force. "For our freedom and yours" the Poles gave us heroes like Casimir Pulaski and Tadeusz Kościuszko in our bid for independence, its a shame that almost two centuries later we couldn't help them keep theirs.

@fouccodefire A country that has defeated the Soviet invasion in 1920 can never forgive their leaders or themselves for giving up without a fight when Germany invaded in 1939. This is a country with a proud history of fighting off powerful enemies, you expect them to cower so quickly? Regarding the disastrous Warsaw Uprising of 1944, the then Polish government in exile were in a dilemma as well, they knew that if they initiate an uprising, it will most likely end horribly; however they knew also that if they chose to do nothing, and the Soviet Red Army inevitable took over Warsaw, then Poland would have no bargaining power once the war ends and the victors decide on what to do with the spoils. It is obvious to the Poles that by doing nothing, they will be regarded as cowards and their descendants will never forgive their forefathers for giving up so quickly, so in the end, the lesser of two evil decision was made to initiate the uprising. Sadly though, the Allied powers did nothing in fear of Stalin.

The Czech whining about Poland "invading" their Tessin area is entirely unjustified. The territory was given to Poland by the Versailles Treaty of 1919 until a proper referendum was held with the population. In 1920 Poland was invaded by the Bolsheviks. The Czechs took advantage to invade the area with a Corps size unit and easily defeated the limited Polish army garrison along with Polish police. The massacred soldiers and police officers who surrendered and took over the territory. When the Czechs abandoned their sovereignty to the Germans the Polish government approached the Czechs with a strong request for them to abandon the territory. The Czechs readily agreed. The transfer was formal and done in a diplomatically correct manner. The majority Polish population showed their wild enthusiasm. There are newsreels showing this entire process. The murderer of Polish prisoners went on to become the Czech war minister.

no it wasn't "given to Poland", are you on crack? the poles in autumn 1918 just decided that the region will be theirs and militarily occupied it despite the protests of the czechoslovak provisional goverment and the entente intelligently decided to split the region between the two nations, splitting the only railway between the czech lands and eastern slovakia in two, not to mention that in 1919 the poles decided to incorporate Tessin into their elections and started drafting people from there in clear violations of the treaty, which was declared as an illegal show of force by the czechoslovak goverment btw i don't really think that giving an ultimatum under a threat of military conflict to a nation that just lost a massive chunk of its territory was really giving them much of a choice lol

Of course - if some country is reborn, everyone tries to get as much, as he can. As Poles, as Czechs. Your "provisional goverment" did the same decision. Even if "provisional goverment" means anything in the times, like those... Our countries were excluded from the maps in XIX century, and there is no simple truth about nationality of the border regions. People were mixed, with no clear identity... Then Czechia was anected. Poland was beated... Why? Because we were in conlict, as a kids fighting for their best toy... In those extremly times, whole central Europe, form Baltic, to Yugoslavia should be in military cooperation, before the Soviet Russia, and Germany growed stronger... We had two potencial armies, you saled your part like on the market, we destroyed ours in horrible, unorganized resistance... It's so f***ing weak, that we always can see traitors everywhere, and never can see our stupitidy. Of all my most admired parts in the History of the Invasion, my Favorite was the effort of the Polish Military during the Conflict was that of the Calvary Men who had rode on horseback against an Armored Division which was not only Courageous but redined the meaning of Uncommon Valor and the Great Fighting Spirit you spoke of, much Respect. @LaMortEtLamour The thruth is that since the end of Middle Ages Poland was not an agressor in most of her wars. Even during Polish-Russian war of 1609-1618. Poland, and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, was a victim of foreign invasions for most of its history.

@@jak00bspyr72 Poland was not the aggressor in the 1609 war? Are you out of your mind? Poland straight up invaded Russia which was going through the worst crisis you can imagine at that time - no king, famine killed one third of the country, etc. Or do you maybe need a reminder of how Poland attacked the Soviet Union in 1919 (it wasn't even a Soviet Union back then) - a country that only got through the bloodiest Civil War in history (or at least in European history)? I feel sorry for the deaths on every side of those conflicts but you reap what you saw.

Many say the Germans didn’t deserve what happened at Versailles, well Poland didn’t deserve the Deluge, the Partitions, the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, the ethnic cleansing of Poles from western Ukraine and Belarus, or to be put in the shackles of the Warsaw Pact. cannot agree with the last sentence. Even though Poland survived the 20th Century Crisis, there are still scars of 600 Years of futile management. For example when the government introduces today a new tax or a new law that is against or violates the constitution not all agree to stand up against the move or ruling party that's kinda because of what I said earlier. Let's get back to Renaissance a lot of people in that time wrote about developing pathologies in Poland Later Commonwealth of Both Nations for example. Violating neighbours, teachers, religion, custom, rule, drinking. They've also written how to counter it, however, no measure was taken due to primacy of Szlachta and focus of Szlachta how to improve it's position (by cash or privilege) in Country and weaknesses started to pop out 200-250 years later... Occurring in Partitions...rest of the story you know (probably)

Well I figure this is the best time to share my Polish family's story. Firstly my mum's family. Half of them were forced to flee (1 man 1 woman and 10 children). They chose Brazil, over a several week long, disastrous journey that claimed a child to disease they landed in east Brazil. However the death of several more children to disease kept them moving. They eventually settled in Southern Brazil, Parana, in a town called Curitiba. Over a period of several years with no money and little income the man had to cut through 2 metres in circumference of wild jungle a year at constant threaght of being bitten and poisoned by animals. Some others chose France but we lost contact with them. The ones that stayed survivded but 1 who was blown up in the initial bombing of Warsaw. Next my dad's family. My grandad and his brother who were of Jewish race were part of the armed forces when war broke out and after a while my grandad was captured by the Soviets and deported to Siberia where he would join his 'brothers' in Katyn or be worked to death. Fortunetly for him and his fellow battalion (led by the brother of general Anders) the Germans attacked the USSR. This made the Soviets an ally for which they would have to release all Polish POWs. However this was for the time where their luck ran out as they were realeased with no transportation. This forced them into a hundreds of miles long march through the cold and terrible Siberia to the hot and unwelcoming Central Asia. Eventually they reached Persia/Iran where they were repatronated and welcomed to join the British North Africa Campaign (this is why Poalnd and Iran have warm historical realtions and why I hate the idea of WW3 ironically splitting them up). He would would fight in engruling and sweat drenching conditions that involved things like spending all day in an over-heating tank and re-using water for shaving and drinking (tea, he was quite fond of the UK by this point). Following the Allied victory they moved on to the Italian campaign where he would be part of Polish foreign legion at the great battle of Monte Casino. Meanwhile his brother was in Warsaw where he was part of the failed and useless Warsaw uprising that cost many children their lives with no Soviet intervention. My grandma meanwhile was a fluent German and Russian speaker and was born in the Tatry mountains in a village called Zakopane in the South of Poland. Whilst her resistance could only be small she still attempted it. Once she had a German who tried exploiting her for food arrested by the officer in charge by pretending to be a native German (her appearence made her appear 'pure' arryan white) by speaking fluent German to him and making a complaint. She did this many times to the Germans however she would attempt to help them when the russians came as she though that the Germans would always be better than them. Now I'm happpy to say that we have recently re-connected with our Brazilian family who have now moved around South America and inter-married with locals meaning I have a Native American family. Curitiba is now a thriving city with a street named after its founder which many of my relatives still live on. My grandad who stayed in Poland became an Olympic (Warsaw block/pact Olymics) long-jumper and still lives. However my dad's pre-war family have all died with my grandma being the last to survive (september last year). She met with my grandad when they both moved to the UK for their hate for the USSR 'occupation' and out of his fondness for it that developed in the war. His brother moved to North America and has a succesfull, rich family there. It is weird to think I owe my existance to Hitler for attacking the USSR and freeing my grandad. For their services my grandma and my mums family got nothing however my grandad and his brother both received the rarest Polsih reward for bravery called the 'Virtuti Military'- for military valour/bravery.

The conflict over Zaolzie as I have concluded is entered by the English history books as Polish aggression in 1938. However, hardly anyone remembers that 20 years earlier, the government in Prague decided to start a war with Poland over this area. In the face of the fall of Austria-Hungary in 1918, local councils decided to divide Cieczyński Silesia. Poland accounted for 77% of this area, inhabited mainly by the Polish-speaking population. However, in 1919, when the military was occupied by the conflict in Eastern Galicia, Czechoslovakia ... ... entered the area unexpectedly, wanting to occupy it. The advantage was overwhelming. 1,500 Polish soldiers faced artillery, a panzer train and 16,000 well-armed infantrymen. The intervention of the Western powers stopped the fighting, but their ambassadors decided about Zaolzie's fate. The region fell to the Czech Republic almost entirely, even though the majority of communes voted for Poland. This conflict became a bone of contention for almost 20 years and in 1938 pushed the Polish government to take away armed forces from neighbors weakened by Hitler. To sum up: the conflict was not caused by Poles and I will only add that by analyzing the facts you will quickly find that Great Britain has betrayed Poland.

Way too many people blaming Great Britain and/or Chamberlain for the invasion of Poland. You are wrong: - In 1931 Japanese soldiers marched into China, treating *all* civilians like enemy combatants. Mass slaughter ensued. Very little to no response from the League of Nations. - In 1935 Italy invades Ethiopia/Abyssinia, testing their gas bombs on civilians. Very little to no response from the League of Nations. - Hitler - who is watching this - is emboldened to go on with his plans for all out war in 1939. - It wasn't only soldiers who suffered from shell-shock. So sheltered are we from war that we forget that, *understandably,* the member countries of the League of Nations were *terrified* of the possibility of another war. It had only been just over a decade since the most deadly war in human history. Military intervention by large powers would have been a last resort, obviously. - It is more complicated than just pointing the finger at Britain and France and claiming they had the opportunity to threaten force. Poland, after all, stood side-by-side Nazi Germany to invade a portion of Czechoslovakia. It backfired horribly when The Nazis betrayed them. Poland has suffered and I'm not saying they deserved what came to them. But if you think this was all the fault of British leadership, you have spent way too much time talking to bitter people who are too angry to care about all the facts.
