I picked up wayfarers knowing nothing about it in a random board game trade….. I didn’t know at the time that I stumbled across pure gold

Awesome review. I'm thrilled that you enjoyed it so much. It's my 2024 game of the year and when I did my top 100 ranking last month I had it slotted in at 7. That's after 14 solo plays. The replayability is through the roof. Even after those 14 plays, I still want more. I love the engine building and the craftspeople upgrading system. The AI is brilliantly designed and pretty simple to run. And I actually really like the dummy player gradually adding influence and moving their boat along to provide area majority competition and tie-breaker influence. Inventors is just an absolute delight! That being said, it's my second favourite of the trilogy - after Wayfarers. Wayfarers was my first Garphill Games experience and I have over 20 plays (all but one being solo) since last year July. But like you said - it's just a complete, strong trilogy of games. Inventors has cemented Shem Phillips and SJ Macdonald as my favourite design duo.

Legitimately wonderful review. I am often one of those self righteous fools who wants to overly-academize board game criticism, and this one, for me, proves that there are truly thorough review channels out there, and the ones I tend to come back to are ones whose viewpoints confound me, provoke me, and make me question my own confirmation bias. The good ones stick around. Always been a fan of yours, Luke. Just wanted to drop a comment for the first time and say this one nailed how to review a game from any publisher, but particularly one you tend to admire in some way in the grand scope.

Fwiw, I am a longtime fan of Garphill and have owned like double digit titles of theirs lol. Sold all but Paladins and this. Weird we diverged there, but this game feels like an inverse of the Paladins decision space in that generalization and opportunism seems to be the ethos of this heavy decision space whereas Paladins is about brute forcing a specialist strategy to maximum effect. But both offer this tremendous feeling of scarcity and satisfaction seeing the ending come knowing you’ve cooked up so much more than you’d originally anticipated. I like the polar ends of a shared identity in this way.

Excellent stuff as always Luke. For me with this trilogy it would go Scholars, Wayfarers then Inventors.

Again a very cool review. Very helpful, you do very well in explaining the ins and outs, the pros and cons. By the way, your inserted 'little movie snippits' are a very welcome feature, must be a lot of work to check for relevant fragments.

The Tigris-trilogy is great, but I think every trilogy was great when it was released, because every game did something new or special at that time. These guys are just brilliant designers (do not forget the games that are not part of a trilogy). Inventors is very good, Wayfarers is still my favorite part of this trilogy, but Paladins is still my favorite Garfield-game.

I really enjoyed not only this game but also your review of it. I agree this is about as much as my brain can handle on the complexity side, but I love this title. Thanks again for the content this year, and I hope your cruise is an excellent chance to reset for 2025! Cheers Luke

Excellent review and I am glad you enjoyed it. I haven't tried learning this one yet, but clearly I need to. I definitely dig Wayfarers and Scholars, so one more to go. I am guessing 3 players would be the sweet spot as usual. Enjoy the cruise!!!

Haven't played inventors yet. In love with scholars. The only game I haven't liked has been wayfarers. I just for the life of me can't figure that game out but am determined to like it. And as you said so I won't give you crap, I LOVE Paladins. My top 2 Garphill games are Paladins and Scholars.

funny you talk about the west kingdom trilogy in the end.. I am just playing through all three games with their respective expansions.. Architects got much better with those expansions, imho, but City of Crowns did convolute Paladins a lot for me, I'd rather play the base game, to be honest! Viscounts is next on my list, along with its two expansions (from all base games, it was my favourite of this trilogy!). I initially passed on Scholars, but then changed my mind during the Inventors kickstarter, so I ordered that one as well, looking forward to receiving both and trying them out! :) Wayfarers is also my favourite Garphill game so far btw.. :D

When playing multi-player, can everyone read the detailed cards from across the table?

Usually fine, as it's all icons. The criteria for each objective is a little small though.

Thanks for the review. I love your honesty even though we don't always agree, but you can never please everyone eh? I used to auto-buy Garphil titles but I actually was quite disappointed in Scholars. It felt more like work than a game. Watching this review it gives me the same feeling about Inventors. It almost seems like they are making games heavier for heaviness sake now. I did not get this one...yet. I will try and play it at a convention though before I write it off because I like to be fair and I like heavy games. I've been wrong before!

Yea, I'm very interested in this one - just adore the theme, but Garphill seems to be on a quest to make the heaviest game ever, I'd really like them to dial it down a bit. There is beauty in simplicity. Hopefully I'll get to test it too

Seeing them pump out 2-3 of these out a year makes me less interested. They turned it into the MacDonalds of board games and I am stunned that it sells well enough to continue. I played two of their games and found them good/ok but nothing memorable. Nobody in the content scene seems to be gushing over these games or putting them on top lists either. So who…who is loving these games so much?

Same here, I think I capped out at Viscounts; everything else that came after just seemed like too much work to learn. I just don’t have time for these complex games anymore, simple games with some depth is where it’s at for me at this stage of my gaming hobby. Anyways this was a very helpful review to know that the entire South Tigris series is not for me; I’ve already got Coimbra whenever I have an itch for a good dice placement game.

@@Puzzu Exactly.... I don't mind to invest time in a heavy and complex game, even play it a couple of times to let every aspect sink in, but some games keep on melting your brain, and I have the feeling this is one of them. Complex for the sake of being complex is not my cup of tea anymore. And indeed, Coimbra is an splendid dice placement game.

I’ve only soloed it and I do wonder how it plays with people. As far as solo modes go I think it’s the weakest of the trilogy. Still very good but I like the other 2 better. I find the camel actions to be restrictive and limit the number of main actions to 2-4 total a round. I’d have liked more. I’m glad to hear multiplayer works well because I want to see how it plays with the limited number of camel actions but more people taking them. I’ll get it tabled soon hopefully with 3 or 4.

If you haven´t check the expansions, really improve more the other two in the trilogy, haven´t try this one. Base game is really fun, enjoying it a lot. The East is going to be lighter, like West, thats what they say. Will see in two years how it goes. Oaladins is my favorite as two player. Found it very fun witht he combos to get more workers. Nice review, was waiting for this one. When is the Vale of Eternity expansion coming?

agree with this, just sold this game and kept scholars as my pick of this trilogy. We are veteran heavy gamers, but this was just doing too many things and easily could have had 2-3 mechanics cut and streamlined. also with Vital's invention themed game, this just didnt satisfy as much as that one

The problem with this game is not that it's complex, I like complex games, the problem in my opinion is that it flows the least well of all their games. I still like it but not my favorite in this series.

Nice review. As for me the look and theme are more important, I must say that Wayfarers looked the best for me. But overall, I think I will just stick to the West Kingdom trilogy. Scholars and this one look soo abstract to me, I will pass.
