The red buses at the start were our school buses that took us to Plockton High School. It wasn't so bad for us Kyle kids, but some poor kids had to travel from way up the glen and Glenelg and others came from Lochcarron. The buses were cold and slow and miserable! Still, not everyone got to travel in a double-decker and my own kids go in a new bus to the same school. I love seeing footage of the class 37 diesels. As kids we would walk along the railway line about 2 miles and would swim in the sea out to the wee islands. We'd spend a whole day in the summer just swimming and arsing about. The great thing about these old diesels is you could hear them long before they appeared and we'd get out of the way in plenty time. I love the sound of them and the smell of the diesel fumes is just incredible! I suppose every generation has it's favourites, but for me the gorgeous class 37s were lovely. I was born in the late 70s and got to ride in these proper trains until they brought in those god-awful Sprinters in the 90s. They are ugly as sin and don't have the character of the proper locos and carriages. I'd love to travel the length of the country in a proper class 37 and it's carriages - I'd be like a dog with 2 dicks 😁

Some superb footage there, and not just the "usual" shots either. A rare example of the 26s running twice in a row, without Inverness drivers failing them for safety-critical issues like draughty cabs, dirty ashtrays or squeaky windows. Great stuff !!

I like foamers so much, they can talk about others job without being able to do It. Makes me smile.

According to my records I travelled on the 17:05 Kyle-Inverness on Wed 18th August 1993.Halcyon days!I loved the sound of the pair of 26s skirting the lochs.

Great video. Captures the atmosphere of the line totally. Love the observation car, which appears to be a converted Metro-Cammell driving trailer unit. And what about that glorious Highland summer weather near the start!

Great stuff. Went up for 001 & 007 three times that summer and August 25th was my last trip behind therm, so I'll be on those trains somewhere!

Excellent video thanks for uploading. Going round the curve into Dingwall, at 58:41 then under the steel road bridge into the station - does anyone know when that bridge was replaced with the concrete monstrosity we see today?

Nice old videocam footage, good old days of loco hauled intercity train with a 33 or a 37. Nice old sliding window coaches in blue and white and in Scot rail's livery

Wow! despite being subbed for a long time I never did see this video. But one of the best Kyle line videos out here, did the trip 1,5 years ago and enjoyed every mile of it, just can imagine how much better it must have been behind a 37 or a pair of 26's, instead of a sprinter set.

Was this a special then ? I thought 26s and 27s had all gone by 1993 ?

This train was the definite last knockings of Sulzer Type 2s in BR service, the Wednesdays only 12:35 Inverness - Kyle of Lochalsh (2H85) and the 17:05 (2H86) return were the last passenger services to be worked by 26s during June to September 1993. The final passenger working was with 2H85/2H86 on Saturday 18th September 1993. All surviving 26s were withdrawn on 4th October 1993. The 25s & 27s had been withdrawn six years before.

To day we have boring DMU's with sealed windows. Scot rail should run a nice Intercity train with sliding windows, between Fort William and Mallaig
@pikachucetthesecond42967 ай бұрын
Look I know it's probably a safety thing and I'd be at risk of my head getting knocked off by doing it but man I wish I was alive for the period where you could look out of the train windows. Looks like the trains didn't move as quickly in 1993 as they do now (I was born in 2004) so I get why they stopped letting you do it but still!

..ahh mate, what could be better than that....Riding a lovely scenic remote " One Track "..in a nice ole Mark 1..chugging along behind a pair of fantastic juicy sounding 26's...Fuck all these boring frigging sprinter units...lets have more of these...may they stay on track, & ride on forever..!!!.

My late father knew one of Kyle's signalmen as the chap had worked on the SR before transferring to ScR only made available by a ScR signalman of equal grade who wanted to move to London so the union allowed it, a shame they didn't when me old man was offered the signalling manager's job at Waverley but the unions were adamant, one comes up, one goes down and so the post was offered someone else and me poor father's heart kinda went out of BR at that point, offering him an AM think Charing X was no consolation and in end took early retirement and spent his remaining years thoroughly enjoying himself helping run Swanage's signalling. To be honest BR treated the bloke pretty badly and their loss was Swanage's gain. Funny thing too is my father was Scottish, Morningside lad and part of the family behind the famous academy in Edinburgh.
