why not f-1(y) = 10^x+2? since its the inverse would it not go from f(x) -> f-1(y)? example: f(x) = 2^x assuming x,y elements of f-1 that is f-1(y) = x. then y = 2^x -> log2y = x so inverse would be f-1(y) = x = log2y right?
@WiederholdMathHelp7 жыл бұрын
Hi Admiral Coby, I am so sorry that I never responded to your question. I meant to and then totally forgot. When finding the inverse of a function, there are two ways to teach it. I teach it by switching x and y and solving for the new y. Then I put it back in function notation, based on the way the original function was stated (in terms of x). Another way is to solve for x and then state the inverse in terms of y. If I followed your question correctly, you are stating the inverse in terms of y, which means your function should read f^-1(y) = 10^y + 2. This also means that f^1(y) = log(base 2)y is correct, if you are stating the inverse in terms of y. I hope this explanation helps. If I've misunderstood your question, please let me know. Thanks!!!

how did you get log base 10?
@WiederholdMathHelp7 жыл бұрын
Logarithmic functions have a common base of 10. As I tell my students, this base is invisible. Just like a coefficient of one is invisible (x^2 = 1x^2). So, my first example of "log (x - 2) is the same as "log(base 10)(x - 2). If a log has any base other than 10, you show it. Does this explanation answer your question?

why is there a log base 10
@thelaurilee3 жыл бұрын
Logarithms must have a base, just as exponential terms have a base. It can be any number, such as log base 5, log base 10, etc.; however if the base of a log is 10, it is referred to as a common logarithm and you do not have to show the base 10 because it is implied. If the log has a base other than 10, you do have to show it. Did I answer your question? If not please let me know.
