So far all my 6 ETFs are in green but obv I understand that can change. The only thing I haven't quite got my head around yet is how often does AutoInvest happen? My portfolio is up £18 but does that mean that is automatically invested? Cash on AutoInvest says £0.02... If you have time, please could you explain - and no worries if not :) Thank you!!

@adrianl5899 4 ай бұрын
@@KeldorTheWhite I have various products and use different platforms. These include II, Fidelity, HL and Aviva. There are specific reasons for using the accounts/providers which may not be applicable to you. For example, I have an old Aviva Stakeholder pension which has retained a protected age access at 55, even though I would otherwise have been impacted by the rise of access changing to age 57. As such, I retain it (0.5% all-in fee) because of that reason. Would I, today, set up an Aviva Stakeholder pension? Not in my situation, no. My Fidelity Sipp also retained access at 55, and for most of the years I had it I was paying a lower service fee than the direct to customer service fee as I went through a broker to access the Fidelity service. The only reason I'm using HL is to oversee a Bare Trust account that got moved there in the ending of another service provider. I also choose to (mostly) invest in UK domiciled funds rather than ETFs, which means ETF-only platforms don't interest me in the main. So thos has a bearing on what I do moreso than it would anyone looking for ETF investing. A site like comparefundplatforms might lead to helping to choose a suitable platform for whatever type of investing wrapper (ISA/Sipp/JISA/general) and type of investment (fund/ETF/shares) a person is looking to do. Even then, I would still do a bit of looking around because there may be offers which, in effect, reduce fees further, and there are sometimes more stealthy fees which aren't necessarily being calculated. A site may appear free to trade on but if you're paying a lot for FX fees, or there's a larger spread then it may not be as favourable as it first appeared.
@adrianl5899

And if that essay wasn't enough (apologies!), I should just say that the most important things are getting going with an appropriate level of contribution to meet your aims into an appropriate investment for the time horizon... And not giving up along the way when the markets fall. We can get stuck before we start in trying to save on fees - and yes, it's something that we can control - but don't get investment paralysis. After all, you can always transfer away 'in-specie' if your investment is offered on other platforms who accept 'in-specie' transfers in. And if not, you could transfer in cash (though be out of the market while doing so).

While you are heavily weighted to US equities, make hay while the sun shines. Just remember the US Market normally becomes more volatile in an election year due to uncertainty around policy changes and once interest rates are lowered, you have to ask what's left to keep pushing things higher. I hear the term dollar cost averaging thrown around alot but it seems like most people who use it just invest the X amount that they can afford each month and don't have a huge lump sat to the side waiting to be invested. I'd be intrigued to know if when you say it you mean you just invest every month from your wage as opposed to having say 10k sat in a bank but drip feeding that into the market. The latter would seem counter to the argument of time in the market being better than timing the market. Enjoy the vids. Keep up the great work.

@magoo9066
@magoo9066 4 ай бұрын
@@ricd21122112yes, historically that appears to be the case. I don't think a lot of people who say that they are dollar cost average are technically dollar cost averaging because they don't have any surplus lump sum left to invest - they're simply investing each month from their accessible pot of money, similar to people paying into a pension pay cheque to pay pay cheque. So whilst it looks the same on the graph they are actually putting in a lump sum every month..
@TobyNewbatt
@TobyNewbatt 4 ай бұрын
Technically yes - if you invest all you have every month you are lump sum investing. You then get a long term cost average in the market. DCA only technically applies if you are choosing to invest a lump sum over a set time period. I hope that was the question 😎

While I believe it's physical full, it's not a standard FTSE/MSCI tracker. Most importantly, it's Luxembourg domiciled so it can act less favourable in terms of tax treaties compared with an Irish domiciled one, for example. Hence, the explicit charge can seem lower but ultimately you may get worse results than an Irish domiciled one containing the exact same underlying make-up as Amundi.

I confused about ISA. What happens after we reach 20000 in the tax year? Does it roll it to next year? So I can add £20K more? Or should I create another ISA for the new tax year?
@TobyNewbatt

Once you have added £20,000 of new money that is the most you can add. BUT that has nothing to do with what it can grow to. It can be millions if you invest it well. The £20k is just the maximum allowance of putting NEW money in I hope that make a sense.

I'm 51 with a pension pot of £10k which is sitting in limbo with a pension company since I was made redundant in 2020. I wonder if it's worth moving that pot into a SIPP and, due to my age, concentrating on topping that up as I can access it at 55, which isn't far away now.
@h418lfc
@h418lfc 4 ай бұрын
Short answer is yes, as fees will still be taken from your account and its always important for you to have access to your hard earned money. As to what to invest in, that will depend on your personal risk tolerance and time horizon as to when you think you may wish to spend this money. Not financial advice.
@adrianl5899
@adrianl5899 4 ай бұрын
It may or may not be worth it. We've no idea what you're invested in, what fees are applying or if you have benefits attached to the existing pension. If you plan to withdraw taxable money at 55 from a DC scheme and not using small pots rule (pot under £10k), you permanently lose being able to pay up to £60k into a pension per tax year as this triggers MPAA and you can only pay a max. £10k. So you have to have an understanding of the situation and future plan to make decisions.

@@hustlinhitch"You can usually take any pension worth up to £10,000 in one go. This is called a ‘small pot’ lump sum. If you take this option, 25% is tax-free. You can usually get: - up to 3 small pot lump sums from different personal pensions - unlimited small pot lump sums from different workplace pensions" So long as you're working within those rules set out by the gov. then yes... but still check with the provider the pot can be taken using that rule (and if so, state you want to take it under that rule). If the value of the pot exceeds the small pots rule, there are still ways to take from it without triggering MPAA and these are outlined on sites like Moneyhelper ( search What is the Money Purchase Annual Allowance (MPAA)?).

Can you make a video on how to claim back extra tax relief on SIPP?

Just as a 'did you know?' - apparently (Pensionbee source) over £1.3bn in higher/additional tax relief went unclaimed in the five years to 2021. 🥴

@@adrianl5899That’s massive. Clearly there is a lot of confusion on this.

Send a handwritten letter to HMRC telling them what's been paid in and that you're claiming all tax relief due. Include NI number. They sent me an email with the calculations and a cheque in the post👌🏻

High Volatility eats away at any profit on your funds. For example 1000 investment goes up 20% = 1200 ,& then goes down 20% = 960.

Re. The UK markets, fingers crossed, will see renewed enthusiasm when we get past the general election. I think there is little interest in investing in the UK with such an incompetent government in place.

I think the S&P 500 could break 5000 however there is one thing that is at the back of my mind and that is the slow down in the EV market which could have an influence on the S&P.

Doesn’t bother me too much as EV sales make up a tiny part of the US economy. It might annoy Tesla investors though! 😎
