The epitranscriptome refers to the collection of chemical modifications on RNA molecules within a cell. These modifications occur post-transcriptionally, meaning they are added to RNA after it has been synthesized from DNA. The epitranscriptome encompasses modifications on various types of RNA, including messenger RNA (mRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA), ribosomal RNA (rRNA), and other non-coding RNAs. These chemical changes can influence RNA stability, translation efficiency, splicing, localization, and interactions with other molecules, thereby playing crucial roles in regulating gene expression and cellular function.
Dr. Tao Pan's research at the University of Chicago centers on understanding the roles of RNA modifications in cellular processes and developing innovative methods for their identification.
In this presentation, he discusses:
Biological roles of various RNA modifications, such as N6-methyladenosine (m6A) and pseudouridine,
Leveraging RNA modifications for therapeutic applications, such as the development of mRNA-based vaccines and targeted gene therapies,
Various detection methods employed to map RNA modifications across the transcriptome.
