Investigating math teachers’ professional competencies. Research report by Natalia Podkhodova, Herzen State Pedagogical University (Russia).
How can teachers meet the challenges of the twenty-first century? The authors of this study suggest that studying professional competencies of mathematics teachers can be useful to help and answer this question. Previous studies explored, for example, teachers’ beliefs about effective learning and teaching of maths, and intended to measure perceptions of what graduate students/future teachers of mathematics/ learned well or not so well during their studies, but the current study focused on the skills of practicing teacher and such questions as ‘what is the relation between the level of mathematical and methodological level of preparation’.
Podkhodova and her colleague Victoria Snegurova highlight the following components of the professional competence: knowledge of math content, knowledge of pedagogical and psychological theories and framework, teaching skills and experience of using existing knowledge in a particular situation.
