I doubt he faked his death but I wouldn't have much trouble believing he secured his families financial future through insurance fraud and then offed himself because he knew he was screwed and would be at risk of losing everything if he went to court

I went last may to the classic team Lotus museum with a less nerdy friend (we were also doing a track day at Snetterton so it was easier to drag him along) and I went on and on about this theory on the way down as we had to make a ten hour drive and I couldn't play bring back V10s for the whole journey for fear of turning him into a crazed killer and winding up in a headline. He asked the tour guide about the theory because he didn't know it was taboo and the guide who already didn't trust us as we were the only under 40s in the group shot us a look that could probably have destroyed half the cars in the building if he hadn't been looking at us

@@nedzosf1gridbox to be fair, the guide seemed to dislike us anyway since we showed up in a not exactly pristine and prestigious car, we were wearing a Minardi t shirt and a Celtic strip respectively and I kept asking him questions out of a pink notebook I borrowed from my sister so he probably thought we looked like clowns regardless of any conspiracies we brought up

This looks like a story taken straight from a James Bond movie and actually in one of the movies about Agent 007 (Die Another Day to be exact) where one of the villains did exactly that (though, it was through 'gene therapy' and not cosmetic surgery).

I think he faked his death, if he was as innovative etc as they say he was then it wasn't beyond him to do it. Remember to that he was a shrewd business man if somewhat in financial and legal trouble. Best way out is to disappear and put it all behind you.

His nickname wasn’t chunky for nothing. He often carried more weight than he should have, add in the strain that the DeLorean scandal might be discovered, his struggles keeping the car company afloat, the unfortunate move into boats, together with trying to keep Team Lotus funded and there are plenty of reasons why he might have had a heart attack. I remember coming out of work the day he died and seeing the Evening Standard Billboards, ‘car chief dead’ or the like. I instantly knew it was Colin.
