In the sun and the heat, my opponent makes the sensible move of letting me come to him. But where is the honor in sitting back?

This is why I'm a big fan of having artillery in online battles. You can't just form up and wait on the defence if your opponent is pounding at you. Artillery forces both players to engage.

Ideally yes, but what really happens is the jerk can just sit in his deployment with cannons and force you to move up. There's really no way around it. It's why Empire and especially Napoleon are my least favorite online.

DracoAvian I really don't mind artillery battles, because at least you have a chance to make the camper move forward. Even if I win the artillery battles, I always move my men forward to face my opponent army. Of course, the only exception is when the opponent is playing as the Turks. Damn their huge artillery, I must say they are compensating for something.

This reminds me a bit like how I was when I first got total war. I HATED taking any form of casualties. Even having a couple men shot felt Devestating to me. Skirmish units automatically get tired when you put them in skirmish formation or light infantry doctrine, the fatigue is 10x quicker and worse in the desert.

Benoo Perkasa Empire Total War is a little bit older (not that much older though) and has the best strategy game campaign I've ever seen, but if you've played a few of the Total War games you won't like the AI because it's dreadful and glitchy at times, also the game can get kind of repetitive, but the "epic" factor is really high and that's what pushes players through the mishaps and pitfalls of the game. Napoleon Total War is a little newer and has a better (yet still overall underwhelming) AI, and players pick it because the mechanics are a little more refined, it's less glitchy, and better for online play. The campaign isn't bad but certainly not as good as Empire Total War. If I were you I'd get Empire Total War and just have a blast because the game is so much fun, if you can live through some of the AI's stupidity it'll be well worth your money. Napoleon Total War is where you hone your tactical skills, trying to become a master player by winning online battles because it's more competitive.

The only real way to be mobile is to have a massive screening force to slow them down, and then you lack the line infantry to defend your artillery.

You have more staying power than I do. If I came across a player who refused to take an engagement or play without knowing for certain that they would have a flawless victory, I'd just note down their name, quit out and find another lobby. The nice thing about Total war is that you can just back out of games where players are just, not playing ball. And actually making it fun for both parties

I may just be over analyzing the battle, and I agree that he was being a big camper but... You took the town on the hill super fast and had a hill. The guy probably decided right there to do his pull back game. As you inched closer, he got into a formation that made you spread out. He got his calvalry into more flat areas on your right while he waited on the left. He placed those spikes down so you wouldn't move forward on that side, leaving him room to move out later. He pushed your right hard with his special units and at one point started forming a C on your army. However I bet he didn't want this. If he pressed you in that formation your could've retreated back to the hill/town. So he pulled back and played his retreat game slowly turning his whole army to be in line with the town/hill that you initially took. By this time your army was grounded down to noodle lines and he didn't have to continue his move toward the big hill. Even with this 'strategy' looking at the nitty gritty, he did play the retreat game a lot.

Although sitting back like that may seem cheap and unfair. However, after a lot of hours and trying different mods on NTW I've realized that taking the initiative can pay off when you execute your battle plan more cohesively. I noticed you would send units forward one by one allowing them to get decimated by concentrated enemy fire. Try not to overlap your units either, I saw many of your lines were unable to fire effectively due to lack of organized unit deployment (some even friendly fired I think). Lastly, I would recommend seriously abusing flanks, if you have a free unit on your opponents flank rush very close to your opponent to get deadly close shots (only do this when they're not taking fire, obviously). Good luck on your next battle!

A few fixes to the game engine to prevent camping: 1. Expand the size of the battlefield beyond the deployment zones so that players cannot anchor flanks on the edge of the map. 2. A more strategic level fix would be to allow players to either surround or else completely bypass camping armies and cut the army's supply line or restrict access to foraging. Once out of supply an army will be eliminated the following turn in a campaign game. Hunger and thirst will force camping players to be more aggressive!

What I see was that he was spreading his forces thin. You should've punched through the center with your infantry and wrapped around his flanks with your cavalry as he tried to pincer maneuver your forces, then spread out your infantry to make square formats while your cavalry are engaging theirs. In either the desert or the snow, light infantry continues to get more fatigued while in loose formation, even if they aren't moving. This applies to everyone except for the ottomans in the desert, and Russia in the snow.

Thats why "no arty" rule is retarded. I maybe had the same mindset when i was 14 years old playing total war games. Playing with friends and some ranked multiplayer games in the latest total war warhammer taught me a lot. Its like playing command and conquer or starcraft like game and say "ok, no attacks first 15 minutes, then we all make big armies and fight". It can look good, but it just doesnt make sense, nor is that actually funny. Still remember though some epic fights we had in supreme commander, sadly, i never got in to the real serious multiplayer, but that game was awesome. So yea, no arty in 90% of games means = look at my box, my box is amazing...

for me, camping is just another strategy. i think the player is allowed to do whatever he wants to win the battle. (as long as he doesnt break the set rules.) and this guy was a good player, not just your average "camper". his mechanics were certainly good and he knew what he was doing throughout the battle, so good job to him and good job to THFE for good game. i won a fall of the samurai battle against much higher rank by camping the ridgeline, hidden in trees. he positioned against me and then proceded to taunt me. i taunted him too and after 20 minutes of camping, i gambled if he was paying attention. i walked my yari ki, hidden, around the battlefield. after another 10 minutes i charged his tosa riflemen from behind and he insulted and ragequitted. i dont think campers are doing anything wrong. i believe they are doing all they can (in their abilities) to win the battle. when someone calls me a camper, i accept it. i dont see that as an insult.

Skirmish formation is making units get tired,always have your lights as a regular foot inf.formation until you ll need them,maps with extreme heat like pyramids,sunken jungle,etc etc,and maps with extreme cold like pyrenees peak causing troops to get tired very fast.There are some nations that can hold their physical condition for more time than others,for heat is the Ottoman empire,and for cold are the Russians,here you had your lights alll the time in skirmish formation,thats why they was exausted when you was ready to attack!

I'm pretty much a new player and I have a hard time with micro control, and I usually lose track of everything going on. I generally use the mini map, but then I'm not availing myself of advantages of the slopes and angles of fire. To compensate I pack the army tight together and surge to a forward position to occupy in force, then I defend it until I feel like the enemy has bashed himself enough that I can lead a counterattack. Is that technically camping?

This is a game. Got it. However, I have to say there is an honorable way and or etiquette that was not observed. It's one thing if you go out and fight hard, but lose on one of your flanks or an important unit(s) and your Army's balance vs your opponent becomes significantly weaker, than it's honorable in the game to stake up a good defensive position. Also, artillery is a great tool to deal with excessively defensive timid players.

Hey Oakley, just wanted to ask if you would be interested in doing NBS (Napoleonic Battle Simulation) which uses the historical battles on the NTW3 mod which are HUGE, ranging from 6,000 to 15,000 men on the field at once. NBS doesn't simulate how the battles occurred, its more of a "what if" scenario. What NBS does do is it adds a set of rules that make NTW less arcadey and adds quite a bit of balance and new strategy. To be honest, campers are tools, but more defensive and cautious players do have strategy on them. What most campers should start doing is move up half way to the mid ground and slowly creep up as to not gain exhaustion. When your troops wait and the enemy comes you should be 2/3 of the way to midpoint. Since the enemy has to travel farther, and will likely not move slowly as to point to point, they will be more exhausted, giving your troops more capability during the attack.

You don't get to play with no artillery and then bitch about people using defensive positions. Artillery's primary purpose is to coax out defenders from fortified positions by pressuring them at extreme range, forcing them to close the gap, and to open up holes in formations. The maps with fortifiable starting positions were created with artillery in mind. OF COURSE a stagnant defensive position is going to be more advantageous when using guns.

Artillery adds dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl. Frederick II, you shouldn't complain about enemy not attacking if you dont have the artillery to force him to attack.

Man, it was your mistake to attack his army. You should have kept the high ground and waited for him to make the first move. There was a timer in the game. If you hadn't attacked him, the battle would have ended in a draw.

The "Fuck you, I do what I want" strategy. And I'm legitimately confused here. Why do people play games like this if not to win and emulate the military experience? Is it the rush of moving forward? Don't have the time to do it properly? Why is it fun if you aren't doing it correctly and trying to win above everything else?

kurt sell often the host will say that the rules are no artillery. When there is no artillery, it can be more efficient to move men in column formation without risking being shelled
