I've never read the book but predicted from episode 1 that the idea was to conquer planets by pretending to be heroes, let them become reliant on you, eliminate any other power that they may rely on or can stand in your way and then when your army turns up and says give us control they just surrender because your already their god

I don't think anybody's truly desensitized to blood and gore, maybe to graphic versions of it, but not the real thing - unless you're a psychopath. I've lived as a war civilian overseas for 3 years. The worst thing I've ever seen was dead babies, and a guy being carried away with his stomach flapped open and bloody guts halfway falling out. You'd think I'd be desensitized, but no I'm the opposite. I'm traumatized. And I still experience PTSD to this very day, over 15 years later. I think people who think they're desensitized to blood and gore are usually gamers & horror film aficionados, but it's easy to compartmentalize those visuals as fiction. The brain does this as a defense mechanism. But when you experience trauma in the real world, and your life is in physical danger, your brain doesn't compartmentalize - it has no choice but to accept the reality of what you're seeing and force you to make survivalist decisions based off of that. That's why soldiers and war civilians don't feel desensitized, instead they become mentally unhinged 🙁

2:00 Can I just take a moment to acknowledge how much I grew to love this one security guard Steve so quickly? Like, in such a short amount of time learning how the stepson has pushed through his own struggles and how proud his step-dad is of that accomplishment so much that he is going to London with his stepson? That line with Steve saying "once he accepts that diploma, that's my son" made me tear up a little. Like, I have never been so invested in any character than I am invested in Steve; he's not just a step-dad he's the dad who stepped up I'm so happy that we saw him again in episode 2 and that Steve was only a little bit injured and how Matt saved his step-dad from the trash bag Mark threw and even called him dad. Just, I love that small storyline with Steve so much. Tell me I'm not the only one who loves Steve?
