Good explanation. A few other points. Thyroid hormones are made in the thyroid, ovaries make T2 and bone marrow white T cells. Thyroid can store 50mg and the body 1500mg. Iodide is converted to iodine in the thyroid by oxidation using hydrogen peroxide and TPO. Iodine stored in breasts, ovaries and salivary glands. Selenium is the highest concentration in the thyroid and acts as a brake on oxidation. Thr organification of iodine is through the lipid transport system which produces iodolactone a requirement for apoptosis or programmed cell death. Cancer cells lack this ability. The reason lack of iodine affect women more: breasts iodine requirements and estrogen inhibits iodine. If someone has a dry mouth and doesn't sweat. A severe lack of iodine.

Yes! It is incredible how intricate thyroid health is and how many cofactors are involved, like iodine and selenium as you mention. And how many facets of our health iodine impacts! Thanks for watching and for your comment!

Thank you for sharing this. I’ve heard very conflicting information about Iodine, namely that Iodine on its own can actually be quite detrimental to the Thyroid without Selenium (which produces glutathione which protects your thyroid from inflammation that can also be caused by Iodine). It’s also good to note that in Japan, they have a diet rich in both iodine & selenium.

What a good episode, thank you so much for what you're doing! Does the TSH go down after some time of supplementing iodine? Or does it stay constantly elevated?
@HormoneHealingRD Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your support! It does eventually come down but it can take 6 months to a year depending on the level of iodine deficiency.

So if i use iodide only, will that not be beneficial for the thyroid?

The majority of the research I’ve seen is potassium iodide, so it’s hard to say. I would see how you feel.

How many milligrams do you take a day?
@HormoneHealingRDАй бұрын
I personally take between 5-15mg daily depending on my thyroid labs, my minerals, and if I’m pregnant or nursing. The amount each person needs is unique.
@danbanfan9524Ай бұрын
@@HormoneHealingRD thank you and I think it’s smart that you base it off of the thyroid labs. I’ve been seeing allot about how comparing to the Japanese intake (possibly) can be a mistake as genetics differ. At the same time there is so much info regarding the health benefits of higher numbers. According to the upper quoted safety limits here in US it’s only around 1.2mg. I see experts that say going above that can be risky and others that say we need much more. 🙄 if you happen to know of any studies I can look at that sheds more light on this would appreciate it. Thanks for the great info and video!

Why do you say ‘don’t just start taking iodine?
@HormoneHealingRD Жыл бұрын
Because as I outline in the episode, there are cofactors that are important to optimize before you start taking iodine. Iodine also boosts your metabolism and you want to make sure your body is ready for that otherwise is could burn you out.

I “just” started taking iodine as a preventative for breast cancer. It caused so many improvements on my health that I never knew of that I never stopped and that was 9 years ago. Take iodine. Most of us are very deficient.

Your comment on not starting iodine is very strange out thyroid needs it even if we dont do healthier lifestyle choices ?this is your opinion not science
@HormoneHealingRD4 ай бұрын
You can eat iodine rich foods without fear but I do not recommend starting an iodine supplement without the cofactors. I also do not recommend supplementing with iodine if you are stressed and not making lifestyle changes because it could be too stimulating and cause more stress on the body. This is counterproductive and does not help people improve their health. I’ve been working in this field for over a decade and this is my clinical experience. If you don’t like it, don’t watch my content.
