Cardano’s goals for Africa and the developing world. Charles Hoskinson addresses packed crowd at LSE.
The London School of Economics has a long history of links to Africa. Founded in 1895 four years before the outbreak of the Boer War, the school launched into the debates of the era. Some of the first leaders of newly independent African nations studied at LSE and its progressive and anti-imperialist stance saw the school play a part in the anti-apartheid movement.
There was a powerful case for blockchain in Africa, he argued. Blockchain technology has great potential to unlock the wealth of countries through the tokenisation of natural resources, labour or property. “Tokens aren’t just good for CryptoKitties, it turns out you can do real things with these platforms, so let’s go try that.”
“If you count the locked up liquidity in these countries it’s in the trillions of dollars. It’s a great paradox that there’s tremendous potential value in places and if only it could be accessed and given to the people in some fair way then poverty would melt away and these would become some of the wealthiest countries.”
“So that’s what Cardano is doing for the developing world,” said Charles. “We have a moral obligation to try and explore this tech and get it to as many people as possible.”
The talk was followed by a wide-ranging question and answer session, with questions on everything from the future of blockchain in China, to transaction fees on Cardano, to establishing regulated cryptocurrency businesses.
The audience had a mix of backgrounds, from serious Cardano fans who had watched hours of videos online, to the cryptocurrency curious.
Timo, 27, is a student from Salzburg at Regent’s Business School in London. Having been interested in cryptocurrency for more than a year, he says he’d watched Charles’s Ted talk, seen his interviews and and then bought Ada. “The project is very serious compared to others, it’s evidence from the team, the web presence and the many interviews Charles has given.”

Furthermore, this section exposes the reality behind current blockchain constraints in that there are no real widespread adoption so everything up to this point is speculative. Cardano approach is heavyweight in a class of guys that are walking into the gym for the first time asking about how to box.

I'm not that religious and am allergic to proselytizers, but when I hear Charles speak I feel the way people do when they congregate to celebrate Christianity, or Islam or whatever with their religious leaders speaking from the pulpit. Charles has a sensible answer for all our problems, and by everything I'm not referring to crypto or blockchain related topics, I mean everything,. And I have faith in his answers since I don't or can't understand all the science behind it. Thankfully someone talented is thinking of how to use blockchain for more than just lining their pockets.The sooner he offloads Cardano and the other tech that IOHK is developing to the people the better, for us and for him. It's an awful lot of risk to have that many good ideas and good intentions.

This has so many practical applications within the CARIBBEAN and Africa just to name a few. I especially love the idea which addresses the disparity that exists in many of these nations where they get pennies in the dollar for their own resources. If we are serious about solving some serious global issues and inclusivity within the crypto world we have to create systems that improve functionality but also addresses real practical problems. This project is exciting on a multiple levels on the basic surface and in its deeper philosophical approaches and future practical uses to address issues within the crypto world/blockchain and more. The possibilities are both scary and exciting. I believe in this project and the brilliance in seeing past the noise and narrowing in to create new innovative tech and approaches. Looking forward to the future.

Better late than never. Not sure why I didn't get involved 3 years ago. I can completely relate to what Charles is talking about. Coming from Cameroon and trying to grow a business back home, you get hit by some very harsh realities. My credit score in the UK is the best you can get but in Cameroon I have none and therefore access to bank loans to grow my business and create wealth is impossible unless I am ready to pay those exorbitant interest rates on offer. It has to be better for the future. The cardano project is the way forward more so because it is trying to solve some real and very practical problems in the world.

I kind of think the same thing. I view Ethereum as the Microsoft. They will still be around, used a lot but stuck on old code due to early and large adoption. Slowly improving.
